A very cool film (I've only seen the U.S. version) The introduction to King Ghidorah, and also putting Godzilla and Rodan together for the first time. The final battle was very cool and action packed

You know what, I actually haven't seen this film. Yeah, that's hard to believe, EternalMothra hasn't seen a movie with Mothra in it. Anyway, I would really like to see it, perhaps they will put it out on one of the new DvDs. By the way, is there a Mothra Song of any kind in this movie, if so which one, or is it a new one?

Haha, I've never seen a mothra fan like you, you're a swell guy, Eternalmothra, lol
The faeries sing a new song, but also sing their song and Mothra's main song, the ones the fairies sang in the green in the previous film. You'll like it, Mothra is pretty cool in it. It's only the one larvae though. You would like it.

Oh, thank you, I try to think that I'm one of the biggest Mothra fans out there. ^_^ I thought they only sang one song. Do you know a place where I can listen to the new one possibly?

Well, the second larva from Mvs.G supposedly either died from the battle, or was taken to Monster Island.

Look on ebay, that is where I got my VHS copy of the movie. This is one of the best Showa films IMO. Great battles between Rodan and Godzilla and that final battle against King Ghidorah was amazing. One of the first movies I seen, and one of my favorites.

This one's pretty good. I liked the whole prophecy thing, and how they actually seemed awed that Godzilla, Rodan, and a new monster were all coming, unlike later entries, where it's like "oh, Godzilla's here."
The battles were great, too, and it introduced the concept of teamwork among kaiju. The "Monster Summit" got a little ridiculous, but was still fun.
One thing I don't get: someone from a crowd asks the fairies what Godzilla and Rodan are going to do. The fairies answer "telepathy is useless for prophesying". Well, maybe, but can't you do what telepathy IS useful for and, I don't know, read their minds?

Normally, telepathy is used to sense feeling, or what another is thinking. Foresight is something that is used for prophesying, because it is used to see into the future. Yeah, the Shobijin should have been able to read their minds. It's either that, or the Shobijin just said that so nobody would get frightened.

This, to me, is one of those Godzilla films that has it all: Strong plot, evil alien menace, great monster battle! It's also one of the only times when aliens actually tried to help us Earthlings instead of conquer us!

I saw this movie for the first time when I was six years old, and it captivated me. I swear to you, Ghidorah gave me nightmares, but was, oddly enough, the subject of my crayon doodling for a long time after.

Interestingly though, it is also one of the first films that gave you a glimpse of the lifestyle of the Japanese people. The others had what we Americans thought the Japanese were like, but this one gave you a chance to see the Japanese at play...watch the tourists and the other folk in the background and you'll see what I mean.

Here's something I posted about GTTHM last year at another message board:

No Fly Zone: Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster(1964) - Revisited

In the event that I live to be an old geezer I'm inclined to think there will be perhaps fifty or so films on DVD that I'll still fully cherish, and for no more than sentimental reasons. Ghidrah The Three Headed Monster, originally released in Japan to theaters in December of 1964, is one of these films. I have lost count of how many times I've watched it, either as a television broadcast, on VHS, and then DVD. This movie doesn't enthrall me like it did when I was a kid but still manages to cheer me up to some degree every time I watch it, in itself an achievement considering how stressed out and fatigued I get often from day to day aggravations in life.

Like other Sunday evenings I spent this one watching the original language, widescreen, English subtitled version on the Classic Media DVD.

Some observations, many of which may look familiar from earlier posts...and some that aren't-

Thumbs up:

1. each monster in this film, Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah, has an outstanding entrance scene.

2. the gravity beams of King Ghidorah, which have never looked as destructive as they do in this film. With each impact these beams absolutely blast buildings and other structures to bits.

3. the sequence in which KG forms in the airborne fireball

4. the onscreen rivalry of Godzilla and Rodan: despite my disdain for some effects flaws in the battle sequences between these two monsters, the rivalry and animosity these two leviathans share is never more evident than in this film.

5. many of the effects sequences in this movie, and during the kaiju battles, are all time favorites of mine, including:
-Godzilla attempting to square up on KG and being promptly driven back into the bridge
-Rodan lifting up Godzilla and then dropping his rival onto the electrical tower
-Rodan using himself as an airborne battering ram in colliding head on with
King Ghidorah
-KG's gravity beams blasting larval Mothra about, the smaller creature tossed upwards by the blasts like a rag doll
-the initial assault by KG, from the air, on the city, a nice combination of the destructive effects of the winds generated by the KG's wings and the withering blasts from the monster's gravity beams

6. larval Mothra's solo assault on KG: obviously very brief and unsuccessful but give the monster credit for trying to take on an opponent despite virtually no chance to win

7. the final strategy employed by Godzilla, Rodan and larval Mothra to defeat and drive off KG: given each of these monster's abilities I thought it was cool and also made sense

Thumbs down:

1. the various firearms employed by the bad guys, who are tasked with assassinating the Princess. While I didn't expect these guys to brandish .44 Magnums their sidearms looked and sounded like toy "pop" guns. The cop's gun also looked like a prize straight out of a gum ball machine.

2. the visibility of wires is fairly common in this movie, something that, for better or worse, only die hard G fans can probably tolerate without a lot of sniping.

3. the way the carrying case for the Infant Island fairies was often handled. From what I could see it would appear the pair of tiny women no doubt, and at times, had to hang on for dear life inside the case, which was not always exactly handled with their safety in mind by Naoko(the reporter)

4. Looking at Susumu Kurobe's skin complexion in this film makes me wonder if he spent some time poolside sunbathing just before the lensing of this movie.

5. the Rodan suit: the neck appeared to be overly long

6. Godzilla appeared to suffer from an overbite, judging by the head of the suit

7. various sequences where hand puppets were used: I'm not a fan of the puppetry arts and I'll leave it at that.

8. Eisei Amamoto in this film: he played Princess Saino's assistant on the plane. (The late) Mr. Amamoto has always looked rail thin in photos but he appeared to be little more than a walking skeleton in GTTHM

For those who haven't seen this movie, you can see the full movie on Google Videos. I personally would like to get it. When I first saw Ghidorah in this film, he replaced Godzilla as my favorite kaiju for a bit. He was just sheer awesomeness! I definitely thought it was one of the good ones of the Showa series. I find my favorites were the earlier ones of the series before Godzilla vs The Sea Monster which they didn't really pick up again till Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. I recommend this film to any fan of Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra or Ghidorah.
