[Galactic Guardians] We are out there... We are located somewhere, not very far from your own galaxy. We are constantly watching. We travel the universe freely, distance and time have little meaning to us. We exist to preserve the balance and order of the universe.. so that its inhabitants may live in peace. Our job is constant.. one we can never stray from. You may call us gods... ![]() But you would be wrong. We, individually, are no different from you. We come from all walks of life.. from different planets in the universe. Our powers are granted to us.. they are not natural.. and if it is willed to be so, our powers can be taken away in an instant. We once led normal, mortal lives as you do. And on the few chances we receive to do so.. we try to return to our normal lives when our duties are not so demanding... However, I've yet to actually encounter one of those moments. And so... My duty continues. This mission.. is no different from the many others I've had since I was given these powers. A routine patrol. This time, near what its inhabitants know it as the "Milky Way" galaxy and its neighbors. I've been by here before. Nothing out of the ordinary. I don't fully expect this time to be any different. That is.. my hope, at least. ![]() : The Milky Way.. haven't been out to this side of the universe in quite a long time. Doesn't seem like much has changed.![]() : Ah, Von'zz. On time as usual.Von'zz... of all the others who were granted our unique powers, he is the one that I have worked alongside the most. He's a no-nonsense type of person and his intelligence far surpasses anyone I've ever known. He controls the aspect of gravity.. and I'm sure no one could do the job better. He likes to get straight to the point- like me in most regards I suppose, but I tend to be a bit more laid back at times. I would trust Von'zz with my life and I'm sure he'd do the same. : I am sure you wouldn't have it any other way, Berenalde.![]() : I'm here! I hope I made it in time..Dari.. well, that's her nickname. Her name is too long for most of us to remember, so we just call her by that name. I'm not sure what to say on Dari, as she is very new. She inhabited the power of the light from its previous holder not very long ago and has accompanied me on missions only a few times. She has a very pleasant demeanor and in most cases is very cheerful. So far, she's the only one I've known to make me smile in a very long time. : You're fine, Dari. And besides, I don't think anything interesting is going to show up anyways. : Oh, don't say that! You make our job sound boring! : Our line of work is not meant to be entertaining, child. : Hm? I sense someone else near..![]() : I have arrived.Gerkogg... he's a bit.. unusual as far as lifeforms go. As far as we can tell, he's basically a robot. Made of steel, control over fire and whatnot. He is dependable though, and I couldn't imagine anyone else in his position... or anything for that matter. : Looks like we're all here then. Anything to report? And then there was myself. By my own race's standards I was a little bit older than an adult. I controlled the power of darkness.. all that hides from the light. No dark corner of the universe could escape my grasp. Not to be arrogant.. but I am often complimented by my peers on my effectiveness. : Nothing of note. : Not a whole lot, other than that rogue comet I've been keeping an eye on. : Negative. : Good, good. : I am not detecting anything of note outside of the galaxies closest to us. We may find something inside of them, however. : Indeed. Alright then, let's spread out and search these galaxies for any irregularities. : Right! : Affirmative.(Welcome to the official Shining Force: Band of Nations Tutorial: Galactic Guardians! Following this post, we will begin a practice session of what to expect when I actually release the game itself. Shining Force is a series of turn-based RPG games that were popular in the 90's and have since fallen of of the face of the earth as their parent company squanders the Shining series on fanserviced action-oriented games that have little to no relation to their predecessors. Though the following will be a preview of the battle system, if all goes well I will include an additional session to include storyline and RPG elements. But for now, don't worry about any of that. Relax, unwind and have fun! Before we begin, does anyone have any questions?) Edited by Eusis, Jun 13 2012, 01:44 AM.

(I'll assume no one has any questions since none have been posted, so let's get things started!) : Okay everyone, get into positions.[Galactic Guardians, Move Out!] ![]() (The first area we will explore in the game is movement. Movement is important as it moves you closer to goals, enemies and out of harm's way if you become surrounded. Normally, the character with the highest speed will be able to go first. In this case, Von'zz has the highest speed total of the four characters currently in command.) ![]() VON'ZZ TURN (The blue boxes surrounding Von'zz indicate the area he is able to move in. Try moving him now!) : It would appear that the closest galaxy within my immediate reach is the Andromeda Galaxy. I'd say it warrants a fair investigation. |

![]() (Now that Von'zz has moved to the appropriate spot, he can no longer move once he has taken an action. Each turn consists of movement and an action, or simply movement. I will now explain the different actions that can be used while in battle: SEARCH ![]() Searching allows a character to search the spot they are on, as well as on any adjacent square. If there is a hidden item on the spot they are currently on, the item will automatically be added to their inventory. If there is an item on an adjacent square, the character will note that they suspect an item to be in that direction. Searching will only take up an action if an item is found. If no item is found, or if an item is spotted at an adjacent square, the movement phase will not end and no action will be taken. SPEAK ![]() Speaking replaces the searching action only if there is a friendly NPC nearby that is capable of speech. By speaking to different people and creatures in the world, you can learn a lot of different information regarding various topics such as history, combat tactics, secrets and even receive items. Recruiting members in battles normally requires an ally NPC to be spoken to, and in some cases by a certain member of the Force. Speaking to an NPC by itself does not cost an action point in battle, but if the player receives an item or recruits a new member, an action point will be spent. EVENT ![]() This will replace searching or speaking only when an event can be triggered by taking this action at the correct spot. Events will only occur to advance the story within a battle, or to capture points such as seizing a throne or object required for victory. ATTACK ![]() Selecting this option allows the selected force member to attack an enemy within range of their equipped weapon, raising the weapon proficiency if the attack is successful. If that character knows a skill with the equipped weapon, there is a chance for the character to use the skill depending on how high their proficiency with the weapon is. Remember, not all characters are well-suited for physical combat! DEFEND ![]() Selecting to defend in battle will allow a character to reduce damage from an incoming attack. Selecting to defend will cost an action point and end the turn for that character. There are several factors that contribute to defense: If a character is not equipped with a shield and if their speed is at the same level or lower than the attacking enemy - Damage reduced by 25% If a character is equipped with a shield but their speed is at the same level or lower than the attacking enemy - Damaged reduced by 50% If a character is not equipped with a shield but their speed is higher than the attacking enemy - Damage reduced by 25%, chance to dodge increased by 50%. If a character is equipped with a shield and their speed is higher than the attacking enemy - Damage reduced by 50%, chance to dodge increased by 50%. There are other individual skills and abilities that may change the rules of defense, so be sure to keep up to date on the abilities of your characters! SPELLS ![]() This opens the spellbook and allows the character to cast a variety of spells if they know any. Using spells raises their proficiency of that spell, but spells can only be cast if that character has a sufficient amount of MP, and each spell costs a different amount. If the character knows no spells, this option will not be available. After each movement on the map is taken, the available actions to that character will be displayed. Here are Von'zz's current available actions. ![]() ![]() For the purposes of the tutorial, you can select to interact with the Andromeda Galaxy, or if you are curious you can take a look at the spells Von'zz has available to him.)
