New Melones Fishing Report

Lynn Striet and Hal Hilgemann fished New Melones last Wednesday thru Friday. We left Fresno Wednesday morning @ 5 a.m. and got to the lake @ 8 a.m., a distance of 130 miles. Launched right away and according to the locals, the Kokes were supposed to be around the spillway or the dam. We didn't find any fish there so we motored over to the island and started catching fish. On day two and three we fished at the Hiway 49 bridge and found lots of Kokanee at that location. The Koke's were small but we limited every day so we will have some fish to smoke. All fish were between 26 and 50 feet. Best lures were orange hoochies with a silver blade, orange wedding ring and Pauls tomahawk in orange. We did keep four trout since they were nice ones. The weather was great (warm) and very little wind on the lake. Very pleasant fishing and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The launch ramps are excellent at New Melones with three docks at each site. We found a great pizza place and Chinese restaurant in Angels Camp. I think in a couple of months the fish will be much bigger so another trip might be in order.
