Wednesday (10-3-12) Bob Keinknight of Fresno joined me for a great day of fishing. We landed 6 Kings and lost 2 so we only had total of 8 strikes in the 5 hours. The Kings were from 14 to 17 inches in length and the top weight was 1 3/4 pounds.
We were on the lake at 9:00 am and trolled the area outside of Zeb Cove in about 150 feet of water. Are first fish hit at about 10 am but was not hook good and after three jumps was off. At 10:30 am we hooked and boated the 17 inch King. Fished that area until 11:15 with no other strikes and trolled to the middle of the buoy line and the action started. In that are we picked up five more Kings and if we stayed longer fishing would have had two limits.
The Kings are in a spawning stage and are not eating but only are striking a lure because they are aggravated. (None of the Kings caught has any food in their stomach or intestinal track).
We fished two downrigger at 90 to110 feet, with ball trolls flashers attached to each cannon ball. The ball trolls were one with 5 # 8 Willow Leaf nickel silver blades the other was 2 # 8 Lure Jensen Dave Davis brass hammered blades with 3 # 7 Dave Davis in hammered brass attached. The downrigger line releases were on a 4 foot line and set about 3 to 4 feet above the ball troll. Attached to our fishing lines was a Shasta Tackle Wiggle Hoochie purple haze by itself. (No dodger or sling blade ahead of the Wiggle Hoochie) and positioned them about 5 to 7 feet behind the ball trolls. A small piece of Anchovies was attached to each Wiggle Hoochie so that the Anchovy was at the end or just pasted the end of the hoochies skirt.
The Kings are not hitting the lure hard enough to release the line from the line clip. When a King is on our lure you will see the tip of your pole move ¼ to ½ half inch. When you pop your line off the line release clip reel hard to take up the slack in your line and set the hook hard at 1 to 2 times. If you do not set the hook the King will get off with jumps at the surface.
Every fisherman I have talked to said that the morning bit is off, could be from the full moon at this time. But I believe that the bit from 11am into the afternoon should be good.
