Lynn Streit and I booked a guided trip with Roger George to fish for Striped bass at the San Luis Reservoir. Many of you know Roger who writes a column for the Fresno Bee fishing report on Wednesdays. We initially planned to fish on Friday Nov. 9th but with the possibility of bad weather for that day, we rescheduled for Sunday Nov. 4th.

We met Roger (who has a very nice new boat….see photo) at the Truckers Stop at the intersection of Hiway 152 and Hiway 33 at 5:30 a.m. This was an early morning get up! We followed Roger to the entry area of the Basalt launch and had a short wait until the gate was opened at 6 a.m.

The boat was launched and Roger headed (very swiftly) to the dam area but east of the pump discharge area. We started fishing in @ 60 feet of water using two downriggers with lures at or near the bottom. Roger has a set up he calls an “umbrella lure” (see photo) which neither Lynn or I had ever seen but it started catching fish right away. In the next three hours we caught and released @ a dozen Striped Bass, all about 3 pounds. We did move to other areas/depths to fish as the day progressed but primarily we stayed near the dam. Roger pointed out some of the popular areas of the reservoir such as Portuguese Cove, Quien Sabe Point and Dinosaur Point. We called it quits at 2:30 p.m. with a total of sixteen fish caught and fourteen released. We never did catch “the big one” but we sure had a nice time out on the water with Roger. He worked hard to get us over the fish and looking at the other boats in the area (no nets out) we did very well. The temperature was a little crisp in the morning but it wasn’t long till we were in our shirt sleeves. The water was flat most of the day. All in all, a very nice experience with a very knowledgeable fisherman, good skipper and my friend and fishing buddy Lynn.
