Hi guys. This is a skype chat I had with a RL friend I have who i've been considering recruiting for a while. It turned into just being a general talk about RP and really make me feel towards the end. I thought some of you may care to read. Dezz: Sahp Moosh. Mysh: posting on forums Mysh: you're still welcome on KM. Dezz: KM? Mysh: konoha mura. the naruto RP i'm part of Dezz: OH! Dezz: Right! Mysh: I recently mentioned to Dubz that I'm running a Teen Titans RP now. he said he was interested, but you know Dubz. He says things. He's impulsive and whimsical. I told him if he was serious I'd give him a link, but I doubt he'd be able to stay active. He's also never forum RPed before, so that's a thing. Also BlueDarival from the DC forums followed that link I left lying around and caused just a little bit of trouble on KM. Not a big deal. I trust you though. I know you'd be good for it if you can step up to the writing style. Dezz: I love Naruto enough to understand the the history. The writing style could be matched if given enough time Dezz: Do you have like Dezz: a sample of the writing? Mysh: yeah! gimme a minute Mysh: I mean recently I've realized that there are a lot of different styles of forum RP out there. In terms of feel, maturity, quality of writing, structure, and definitely pace too. At KM we have a fairly easy going post speed. A post a day is pretty optimal, but it can go much slower. Uh. We're also not super structured. It may look like it from the forum, but we're really not. Once your character is approved you'll basically find one dedicated thread that we all post in. I don't really know what I'm trying to get at, but sometimes I've seen people expect a different pace or laxity in approving characters and get put off. Here's something I'm doing right now. I'm running a mission with one other guy. When there's just two people it obviously goes faster. Hachirou is my character http://puu.sh/3bB1v.png http://puu.sh/3bB23.png http://puu.sh/3bB2q.png also something to note is that most of us there have known each other pretty long, and when you know someone longer it gets easier to get comfortable and write longer. Also as a rule of thumb, the longer you post, the more your partner will have to respond to and be inspired by, causing longer posts themselves. Meanwhile posts can also be fairly short: http://puu.sh/3bB8A.png http://puu.sh/3bB90.png Kagami, the girl, is my character. Shuuki is RPed by lead mod. He's one of the most experienced there, but has a great sense of humor as you can maybe see. In that bit our characters are actually out on a sort of vacation on the beach, a rare occasion. The backstory is that the higher ups of Konoha expect a war to break out soon between a few of the villages and a team of rebel shinobi; and Kouji, our squad leader, wanted to let them have a bit of fun before the trouble breaks out. While most of the time the RP is free-form and everyone kind does whatever they want within the village, train and such… there are also some bigger planned plot lines. Right now we're setting up for the war, which will be a big production. After that we're planning a long time-skip. Like 20 years. So that's what's up…. Mysh: http://s4.zetaboards.com/Konoha_Mura/index/ Dezz: Super interesting. Dezz: So let's say that I wanted to jump in. Dezz: I would likely be someone joining in on the war effort? Mysh: Welp the war isn't quiet close to started yet. You'd have time to start posting in the main Konoha thread: meeting other characters, training a bit, maybe being set up with a team, ect. Mysh: idk if there are many other free genin right now. Actually most of the other members who composed Hachirou's team have disappeared, so there's a big chance we'd be set up in a squad together Mysh: maybe Hawashi would be the third member… he'd also RP BLACK, our sensei. He's another mod. Mysh: we would hang out in Konoha for a while. Sparring is the most popular thing to do, but we socialize a ton too. WHEN the war starts, I expect some of it to come to Konoha. As in shinobi would invade. That's what happened last time. You'd RP fighting or protecting villagers. If possible you'd meet up with your squad or other shinobi to be more efficient Mysh: enemies are NPCs, though the rebel shinobi team has a lot of player character. Think of them like the Akatsuki. they're pretty tough. You likely wouldn't be expected to fight them. Dezz: The issue I always used to run into with longer posts are reactions. For example, what if I wanted to write about a long action sequence that you and I are there for: Kakashi stepped into the ravine and notices three large men standing in a circle. He caught a glimpse of the hand signs one of the men is doing and noticed the earth signal. He quickly signed and uses Raikiri, charging at the men. "I wonder where the konoha freaks went." The man muttered before spitting into the fire. "Keep quiet, I'm using my earth skin jutsu to do some scouting, I'll need-" Kakashi's hand went through the chest of the man and caused the man to spit a small bit of blood. He slowly turned and looked. "You son of a bitch." He slowly collapsed onto the ground, going limp. The other men jumped and faced him --- No you can't do anything until I cut it off there. What if you would have jumped in and done something, like, stop Kakashi from charging into the battle? Mysh: ah as in forceplay stuff Mysh: gimme a min Dezz: Ok Mysh: well in social situations it's not as troublesome. As you could see in my first posts, Hawashi lines up a few different things that are happening and I in turn respond to each. In fights it can sorta happen in the same way, but you don't line up as much action at one time. Typing too many attacks is overwhelming and a rules violation. Concerning what you were asking about, you'd post your characters intentions in their attack, their technique or whatever, but leave it open ended. It's ALWAYS up to the receiver whether a hit lands and how much damage is sustained, ect. Typing in your attack that a blow lands is forceplay. By the same token, being that guy who always types about his character escaping blows is also a form of forceplay, as you are making your character more skilled than they ought to be in reality. For example the posts may be: "Kakashi eyed up the circle of enemy shinobi and picked his target. He charged his raikiri and swiftly bolted from the tree and towards the earth shinobi. He thrust his hand forward at his target's back with killing intent" "The earth shinobi with his back turned noticed nothing as he prepared his jutsu. One of his partners looked up from the fire and at him in time to see the shock of blue light over his shoulder. With a roar he pounced over the flame and tackled his ally to the side, but not fast enough. The lightning attack grazed his shoulder, leaving a deep gouge of seared flesh" or for instance if these are all NPCs which are ok to let die they may actually post "…but not fast enough. The lightning attack pierced through the man's shoulder. He let out of howl as his eyes rolled skyward before going limp." I forgot to mention that kind of thing about combat. Because we all know each other pretty well and are all experienced, we trust each other not to forceplay. It's just kinda something you settle into. You learn how to not forceplay as well as be fair with receiving hit. You learn what makes the most interesting and fun fight without always feeling like you have to de-limb your opponent. The fact that most of the fights are spars within Konoha between genin also aids that, in that the characters don't actually aim to KILL each other, though being injured is completely common. I'll post a few segments of our fights so you can see Dezz: Ok, ok. Dezz: I got the feel a little more clearly now. Mysh: http://puu.sh/3bCfc.png http://puu.sh/3bCgV.png http://puu.sh/3bCiJ.png http://puu.sh/3bCko.png http://puu.sh/3bClm.png Keep in mind these are both very powerful genin for their rank. A couple of the best. Shuuki is naturally talented, a bit of a knuckle-head naruto type. Kuda is of the uchiha clan and a lot is expected of him. shuuki uses yo-yo's as weapons. also the baby isn't a human baby. it's some kind of weird kuchiyose summon demon baby. Weird shit happens sometimes man Mysh: but anyway you can see how they send attacks, but don't detail them landning Mysh: battle posts are usually shorter for this reason Dezz: makes sense Mysh: Hawashi's character, Kuda, takes a hit from the yo-yos, but lessens it, and manipulated the situation to his advantage by countering with a fire attack. This is how battles go. You want to win (in most cases) but you also learn than making a fight interesting and fair is more important Mysh: losing a fight doesn't speak as much about a character as you may think, and it progresses character development and friendships. That's the important part Dezz: Right Dezz: Makes sense Dezz: I like the set up Dezz: It lends itself to whats important Dezz: Not the battles / being the best Dezz: but interaction and storyline Mysh: mhmm. Mysh: That's part of why I love this group. They understand that it's not really a _game_. It's not about winning. It also doesn't always have to be about fighting. It's about character development, both personal and interpersonal. I was thinking about how I'd define Forum RP to someone new. It's not a game. It's more like writing a book with anywhere from 2 to 20 other authors Dezz: ^ Dezz: This is SORT OF what I'm used to Dezz: my old RP forums weren't as.. well.. structured, but it has this feel. Dezz: It was like writing a book with other people Mysh: which is why it was my first instinct to post that fun stuff on the beach. Those moments really speak mountains about Kagami and Shuuki. Kagami's usually really reserved, and on the beach she showed her ability to really trust her team and let loose a little. Shuuki is likewise very bent towards combat and danger, and this was a chance for him to be just be silly and nothing else Dezz: Exactly, it makes them people instead of NPC ninja Mysh: mhmm. We have a term for characters like that. Occasionally you'll see people post characters with outrageous jutsu that may actually be fair, but you can tell from their writing that they're only interested in the fighting and nothing else. We call those characters 'jutsu machines' because whoever is RPing them usually goes on to post other characters with different jutsu, again with only the intention to fight. Some of the mods have upwards of 7 characters (maybe even 10 pertinent NPCs beyond that). Many aren't often active and are used mainly as plot points, but never as weapons. The ones who are used more often are like Kazuki's Shuuki. They are about growth. The reason they have so many characters is not because of indecision or wanting to command more jutsu, but because they've been in RP so long that all these characters have grown up or progressed in new ways. There are so many amazing interconnections between their characters, and it's all sincere. I have soo much respect for Kazuki and the other higher ups there. I'll watch them in the bigger plot arcs like wars where they post pages and pages of combat and drama, and they'll have a character die and it breaks my heart, because it honestly means sooo much to the RP. It's felt by so many other characters who have built up connections with them through weeks/months/years of RP Mysh: fuck man. Mysh: these feels Mysh: I personally only have two characters. Kagami and Hachirou Mysh: and I'm enjoying RP to the fullest Dezz: That sounds like something that is seriously amazing to be a part of. Dezz: I remember those exact feelings. Dezz: We had a 2 year long high school RP Dezz: that turned into a world revoltion Mysh: fek Dezz: and when one of our characters died Dezz: I got teary. Dezz: Yea man. You've convinced me. I love you guys. :3 Edited by Fox_Mysh, Jun 9 2013, 08:16 AM.

Yeah dude. That made me smile bigtime xD. It's nice to know how you think about the RP and that you think the same as the rest of us. In my opinion it's all about having a fun time writing, developing and playing out a story. It's not at all about the fighting. I love writing my characters and building up their relationships with the other characters and it's good to see people enjoy that as well ^^ |
