Kurimoto looked around the room slowly. He turned to Motohisa "If what you say is true, and i have no reason to doubt you, then i will need to ready my men. They are loyal, and with me leading them we can stamp out this Uprising swiftly. But we need more information. I would need to know where and who they are." He turned to Chikage "Do we have the proper agents here to find out this info?"

Hurriedly, Motohisa began to speak after Kurimoto had finished speaking “If you wish to find and kill the Shadow Samurai then I’m afraid that is almost impossible, they will have disguised themselves carefully and infiltrated themselves into the society and the military. Likely the best way to stop them, is to find out when they will strike and prepare without them noticing. There would likely be more risky solutions but I shall leave that up to you if you wish to take those paths. It is likely that even in your men, although most of them are loyal as I’m sure you have a fine eye for talent, that one at least is a Shadow Samurai. That one is all that is needed to spread discontent, cause desertion and maybe even encourage them to join the Hattori or a rebellion as you fear may be occurring. If you are not speaking of the Shadow Samurai as the target of your men, but instead the ones who are making them act, then I’m afraid I can be of no help. I had hoped you would know of something more certain yourselves but I’m sure between all of the wise men and women gathered here we should be able to figure something out” |

Chikage furrowed her brow in annoyance. “Motohisa. Why is it that whenever you are involved in some capacity, former Tamami master, the reality of our situation seems to give way to overbearing lunacy and fairy tales, as if some adolescent fantasies had infiltrated the world we live and work within?” “Shadow Samurai, Shadow Samurai? I’ve heard less ridiculous concepts from children caught up in their own infantile imagination. Every time you open your mouth I feel more and more like you are forgetting that this is Japan, not the product of whatever hallucinogens you have been subjected to. This whole notion is ridiculous and contrived; if this is your way of telling the daimyo that you wish to give up your old position and become a story-writer or a playwright of the ludicrous and the fantastical, I'd say give it up now. All of these past events involving you that we have had the misfortune to be subjected to have reeked of poor-contrivance; frankly it is becoming tiresome.” “Let me make something perfectly clear to you, disgraced officer; there are two clans within this great nation that are known for their assassins, for their skill at subterfuge, and they are the Tokugawa and the Hattori. The ninja of the Hattori may have previously surpassed our own, but we have since come into possession of the ninja training grounds in Omi and Iga, loosening them from their seat of power and ensuring that the greatest agents, the most skilled assassins, the proudest infiltrators in the world are the ninja of the Tokugawa, trained here within the bounds of our lands, many of which I, the Shinobi Elder, someone far more knowledgeable of such affairs than you, have overseen personally, not these imagined Shadow Samurai.” “Where exactly do they come from? Perhaps they have some secret training lair hidden high in the mountains where their secret arts have been passed from generation to generation? Perhaps they possess some mythical ore than creates weapons worthy of the gods, or tactics which somehow magically outclass those of the greatest generals of our time? Pah, spare me, I’ve heard enough of such prattle. What exactly have the ever accomplished? Our own assassins are infamous for the number of generals that have lost their lives to their poisons or their blades, and the troops of the Tokugawa, many of which are mere peasants, have conquered province after province. What then of the deeds of your smoke and mist monsters? I have never heard of a ‘Shadow Samurai’ accomplishing anything. Who took the head of our beloved general, Mochikata, one of your delusions? No, it was a ninja of the Hattori, one of a dying breed who is about to be tracked down by our own, superior agents and put to death for his crimes. How many such agents as skilled as Yorimasa do you think observe this very room as we speak? Do you think I would leave the daimyo undefended? Attacking this palace would be suicide enough with the garrison of soldiers present, but my assassins alone are more than capable of taking down any threat before it has even had time to contemplate its actions, and unlike your so-called Shadow Samurai they are real and their actions are felt by our enemies, our own troops take heart at knowing that their presence is there to support them.” “Disgraced officer, I have more trusted agents gathering information within and without the bounds of the Tokugawa province than you could care to imagine, my agents track the movements of our enemies and our allies, the wall of the city are my eyes and ears and nothing escapes my notice. Not the preposterous stirrings of rebellion within our territory who think themselves hidden from my sight unseen, and certainly no fictitious elite Shadow Samurai. Any fool who would seek to infiltrate his way within these fair walls would find a blade in his back before he had time to take up arms. Or perhaps you think your own information gathering skills to be greater than my own, I who have proven myself worthy before our daimyo, I who was selected for the position of Shinobi Elder and have upheld my position with dignity and respect, achieving success worthy of our great clan? Your arrogance is truly overwhelming.” “We are real, the Tokugawa are real, our troops are real, our ninja are now the greatest within all of Japan, and they are real. I am not suggesting to you these ideas, I am not suggesting to you that this is how the world works, I am outright telling you, and if you choose to remain ignorant and swayed by the ridiculous fantasies that you have been exposed to then that is your business, but do not make it ours. You come in here spreading the stories constructed with your undeveloped imagination and cause trouble within the hall of the daimyo at a pivotal point in our campaign. If, and you would require an unreasonable suspension of disbelief for it to be the case, there is any threat to this palace, it would stand no chance against the skill of the Tokugawa troops and agents who have proved that they are the best through their amazing feats of conquest, their actions that will go down in history. Fairy tales cannot stand against honourable Tokugawa blades.” “None can, none have ever done so throughout the rule of our daimyo, nor shall they ever. Under the rule of the great man that you have the audacity to stand before the Tokugawa have all but unified Japan, and we are mere seasons away from ultimate victory and securing our Lord’s seat as Shogun.” “Now do you have anything to say that is grounded within the reality of our time, or would you prefer to keep your head in the clouds forever, concocting your little plots for your own amusement?” Edited by KodKod, 28/10/2011 - 04:58 pm.

Kaiso let out an annoyed sigh. This is the man who got me where I am? "Whatever you are rambling on about, it has no bearing on my work as Tatami Master. I am therefore keeping out of this malarkey. That said, predecessor, you forfeited your position when you went gallivanting off doing gods know what. I hold your seat, and if you dare to forcibly claim it back, I'll pluck out your eyes and shove them up your backside!" Edited by Kimarous, 28/10/2011 - 05:13 pm.

Horrified by the reactions of the others Motohisa quickly added his own comment before anyone else could speak “I am sorry to have given offence to any of you that was not my intention. Regarding my former role I do not desire to reclaim it in anyway, I have served the Tokugawa already and I would serve again if the Daimyo wishes but if he does not I will be content going back to my elderly parents, if they did not die while I was in the Hattori Cell, and living the life I used to live. All I desire to do is pass on this one last warning before I go back home. I am not claiming that these Shadow Samurai are better than our own Ninja’s , but they have different talents from Ninja’s. Instead of being stealthy, they disguise themselves as peasants who wish to live in peace or Samurai who wish to join our armies, they may have a few more tactics than that but I am not fully aware of them. When they disguise themselves, they do this many years in advance. I’m sure some of your agents have already found a few of them and slain them probably without realising who they are. Even with your agents being the best in Japan, there is no way you could find them all unless you just started slaughtering random people. I am also not claiming these men will be the downfall of our mighty and glorious clan, nothing can do that, but they may inflict some damage and I felt I best warn you because I know our Daimyo loves his people, and he wants to make their lives better and reduce their casualties at all costs. Maybe I had made them sound more mystical than they are but that is because I cannot give you facts on exactly what they will do or how they will do it. However, I do have more information on these people than the rest of you likely do. Most of this information I have gotten came the mouth of the Hattori Daimyo himself. I believe the best way to make you believe me is to tell you my whole story since I was captured. Forgive me if I am slow or I need to pause at some parts but it was not a pleasant experience and I don’t like remembering it and reciting it is a torture in itself. As you likely know, I was going to go visit the land of our great clan so I could see first-hand what exactly needed to be done and talk to the people about what they wanted. It was going fairly well until once I followed a monk to his house. I had promised I would help all people so I could hardly refuse. That night, the house was set ablaze and I almost died, accept for the fact my captain of my guard saved me. I scoured the land for the monk to try and extract information but I couldn’t find him, he likely burned in the inferno he started. Whoever he served he was loyal to. Afterwards, I carried on my visit and eventually I received word from a messenger carrying a scroll that my presence was required by the Daimyo in a nearby city. I can’t remember the exact city as it was many years ago as I’m sure you understand. The handwriting looked identical when I read it so I followed the orders. Upon reflecting on this I have realised I was too rash and probably too arrogant as well, I am mortal and I make mistakes just like any other person. Upon arriving at the city, I was ordered to head to the castle and some men escorted me. As we were walking through some streets, a few small objects fell from above and burst open, spraying fire down upon my men, killing many of them that instant. Smoke blinded us all and as we stumbled around trying to find our weapons. Quicker than us, our escort pulled out their blades and began to slaughter us. The moved extremely quickly, the only one who could react in time was my captain of my guard. He is a very talent warrior who practices hours every day so he should have been a match for one of them. I was wrong. His opponent easily parried his blows before striking out as swift as lightning and nocking the Captain unconscious. They captured me as I tried to run and then clubbed me around the head with something. I don’t know what happened next. I was in a cell, it was their cell. All I could do was consider what had just happened. Those ‘escorts’ were only speaking to the captain of the garrison at the city a few minutes ago before they turned on u. He must have thought them legitimate troops and seemed to trust them. Now I know about the Shadow Samurai I suspect that might have been some of them. Just three men were all that was needed to kill my entire guard, that isn’t including that fire either. The cell I was had only one guard, but he had a sword I did not, even if I had one I wouldn’t be any good with it. All I could do was wait. One day, instead of giving me food they instead clubbed me around the head again and the world went black.” After having said this, Motohisa looked very pale and was trembling slightly. “Excuse me while I gather myself together, the worse is yet to come.” Motohisa stood there silently taking deep breaths before he would carry on his story. |

Fujiko feigned an expression of shock and turned to Hirotada. "Quick, my lord. We must act. First Yusei and now Motohisa have gone mad. The enemy has poisoned our freshwater supply with hallucinogenic drugs!" Then she became serious again. "Jokes aside, Chikage is right. There is no such thing as Shadow Samurai. Even if some men call themselves that, they are just men. Disguising themselves as peasants is a trick every Shinobi learns in their first year of training. I don't even have to ask Chikage to know that. A single one can subvert an entire unit? Bah, you insult the Tokugawa people once again, Motohisa and I'm sick of it. There are no infiltrators in the government either, because we are the government. Or did you mean to suggest that one of us is working for the enemy?" "Have you considered using common sense for a change? A far more likely explanation is this. Your captors let you escape on purpose, otherwise you would be dead. They tortured you, for which I'm sorry by the way, and filled your head with nonsense of these Shadow Samurai. You are doing exactly what they want, which is to sow distrust among us through these tall tales. I'm starting to think that the poor mad, fellow who came here after your disappearance suffered the same fate, telling a ludicrous tale of phantom yari warriors. Don't you see that you are being played?" "The Hattori are as good as defeated and this rebellion is nothing more than a spook. Their only weapon is stirring up our fears. That's why we hear of mystic weapons, mystic infiltrators and mystic men. There is a rag-tag band of men in splotchy armour led by a lunatic out in the woods and that's all there is to it. They make noise to make us shiver in fear. But our garrison is more than enough to deter them from even attempting to attack. Their greatest victory was burning down a goddamn watchtower with a 5 to 1 number advantage. I don't even call that a battle." "Everybody with half a brain knows it. Mikawa will not fall to imaginary Hattori warriors nor fanatics from the woods. Not today, not tomorrow and not in a hundred years. Can we get back to dealing with reality now, please?" Hirotada finally stood up, he had heard enough. "My officers have said enough, I do not propose to add anything further. Motohisa, I welcomed you into this hall today because I wanted to allow you the opportunity to speak with me to explain why you disappeared. As a former officer I thought it prudent to give you that opportunity. I am saddened that you suffered such a fate at the hands of our so called allies at the time. I had men out looking for you and it is a shame that you had to endure such ill treatment for so long. As you can appreciate things have to move on and that is why a new Tatami Master was chosen. I am glad to see that you are alive Motohisa and I hope you can find peace within our lands for the rest of your days. However, your far fetched stories are to end now; I do not wish to hear anymore of your Shadow Samurai. We are facing a very real threat in the Hattori right now and we are preparing to capture Kyoto, therefore we do not have time to listen to such far flung tales. Please leave us." Hirotada sat back down. Edited by damo2986, 29/10/2011 - 12:34 am.

Bowing towards the Daimyo “If you deem it wise to ignore my warning I shall accept that as I have always said you I believe you are wise, and you are definitely in the correct state of mind as you have not been what I have been through. I do however have a few final requests, at least increase security around yourself just encase of something happening, it would put my mind at ease. Also, if you can allow those farmers some glory who saved me, even if it’s something as low as granting them positions in the army as Ashigaru or allowing them to become Samurai. Without them, I may not have been able to escape. I feel prepared to tell you of my escape now, and afterwards I shall leave as you have ordered, I just want to honour these brave men. Upon the Hattori hearing my lies how I was despised by farmers, they sent only farmers to give me food so as to stop me learning anything about the outside world. However, these farmers wanted to help me, in hopes I would be able to help them. I knew that it was likely to be my only hope, so I accepted. One day, one of them managed to smuggle in a sword for the Captain of my guard who the Hattori foolishly put into the same cell as me, I’m not sure how they got hold of him. In any case, he used the blade to take the guards by surprise and kill anyone in our way before they even knew we escaped. We stopped at a nearby farm and they sheltered us, protected us from the Hattori search parties. Shortly after a few farmers offered to protect us on our way to Mikawa and our small party grew and grew. Without them, it is highly likely we would have been attacked by Ronin or bandits and been killed, while we were so close to escape. Farmers do not make bad warriors if organised properly and given equipment, their muscles are already incredibly strong. “Having finished saying this, Motohisa left the hall, likely it was the last time he would see this place. Outside of the city, the farmers still waited. Motohisa instructed them to wait a while longer; he hoped the Daimyo would reward them. Mounted back on his horse, Motohisa began heading off to his parent’s house, wondering if either of them were still alive. At his side rode his Captain of the Guard, Kagna, who’s loyalties lied to his master and friend, Motohisa. They had been through too much together to be separated, and Motohisa still had plenty of money from his trade. Their part in politics was over, Motohisa’s debt satisfied. They could enjoy their life in peace, and be thankful they still had one. Motohisa thought to himself there is more to the tail than what I have said, but it seems I wasn’t required to tell them. I wonder if they will be able to work it out on their own using what I have already said and any other information they may be able to gather. I never told the Daimyo how he helped my escape, it was indirect but he helped none the less, maybe he already has suspicions of how he helped. He said that he sent men looking for me, I’m sure there was plenty of times the could have figured out what had happened to me and changed how everything would have played out but they proved too slow or incompetent to do so. I do wish they would have told me more about this rebellion I heard them mention or for that matter anything else that was going on, I may have been able to have provided them with help and information with it. Still, I am confident our Daimyo can handle it by himself; he doesn’t need me to help. My role in this is over. Perhaps it’s finally time to focus on family matters. I’ve never had much of a chance to do that between serving the Daimyo and making money for myself. I only hope the Daimyo remains safe. |

"Alright then," Fujiko said. "Back to business. The way I see it, there should be three points to oversee." "After Mochimori has dispatched his samurai units to Ieyasu, he will go down and take Kawachi. In the meantime the remanants of Mohcikata's force will capture Yamato. Both armies will then merge and take Kii, the last settlement in central Japan." "Okubo should relocate to Settsu and hold the fort down there." "After Ieyasu has taken Kyoto, he will march north into Takaoka lands, replacing possible losses during the siege with the garrison force from Tamba, and safeguard the Takaoka from harm." "Oh, and Hirotada-sama," she said as non-chalantly as possible. "If you find the time, please drop by the temple. Your daughter is ready to talk to you. My guards have instructions to take you to a waiting room upon your arrival." Hope this works, she thought to herself. |

"Well to me Fujiko those seem like the most obvious points of attack. So we shall do them as they are very sound, seeing as our main goal is just about to be achieved we shall soon have the other clans begging for peace. As they will have seen what happens when you resist the Tokugawa. Have our diplomatic relations with the other clans improved yet? If not they surely will after the shogunate is under Our daimyo's control." Kurimoto said. |

"Not yet, Kurimoto-san," Fujiko said. "But rest assured. I have a plan. As you said the Shogunate and the resulting endorsement from the emperor will give us the leverage we need." "Once Kyoto is ours and the Hattori are ground into the dust, the Chosokabe and Shimazu will have no choice but to negotiate. We have only had a minor skirmish with the Chosokabe and we haven't crossed our blades with the Shimazu at all. I can bring them around without need for further violence." "Once Hiroada-sama has become Shogun, there will finally be peace across all of Japan. But until then we must remain vigilant. The Chosokabe might make one last desperate invasion attempt and the last Hattori army is a grave danger to our Takaoka allies." |
