Chikage burst into the hall, a wide grin beaming across her face. “My lord, fellow officers, I hope you can forgive my brief absence from these halls; I took some time to make a trip to Iga province in order to liaison with our agents in the field, as well as take care of a few... personal matters.” Her tone was unusually sinister as she drew out those last words. “But now, having created some good fortune for myself I have returned.” “However, I am sure that none of you are here to listen to my stories, on to my final plans regarding the use of our monks, ninja and metsuke.” “So far our agents have performed admirably, and now that we are capable of focussing our troops on the central objective of Kyoto that is where the attention of our ninja should also turn; unlike our soldiers small, poorly-defended provinces are of little interest to them. The Shogun knows that he is on the precipice of defeat, his security will be heightened to a greater degree than ever before, and the walls of Kyoto are already the strongest in the nation, our ninja will need to focus their efforts if they are to achieve anything at all... that said the ninja available are still somewhat limited.” “Yorimasa is chasing down the rogue Hattori agent responsible for the murder we witnessed scant few seasons ago, and he should no doubt continue on that path in accordance with the daimyo’s wishes, but it will reduce the impact he is able to have in the coming war. Should he make the round trip back to Kyoto in time then he can be put to good use assassinating the Shogun and his contemporaries.” “Saneatsu to the West is tied up in his vigilance for the large Hattori army that we know exists in the area. It would be unwise to distract him from this task. With him and Yorimasa tied up, we would have only a single, inexperienced ninja in the area free to take action against Kyoto; his job would be to sabotage buildings as well as the garrison and castle gates of Kyoto.” “It may be worthwhile considering hiring an additional ninja in Omi and having him trained in assassination, his chance of failure will be greater than Yorimasa’s would be, but whilst Yorimasa is away he may well be capable of taking out several of the Shogun’s generals in the seasons before we take to besieging the province, letting that old relic of a past era face his encroaching doom alone.” “Our metsuke, on the other hand, are of limited use in such a scenario and should continue to act as escorts for our generals. I cannot stress the importance enough of ensuring that they are instructed to remain with the army once it departs from one of our castle towns; we do not want any more deaths than necessary at such a pivotal moment in our campaign.” “Finally, our monk will be of great use attempting to demoralise the Ashikaga Shogunate further, just imagine it: The shogun is surrounded on all sides by the Tokugawa, the uniting force of Japan that challenges his reign, his allies have failed him, his call to arms against us has only hastened our attention against him, and his general and sons are dropping dead at the hand of our ninja. Finally, when all hope is lost he turns to the gods for support, only to find that word is spreading that even they are against him; it will be glorious.” “Briefly I feel that I must touch on some troubling news I received from one of our agents. According to Saneatsu there are a total of three Hattori generals stationed in the province of Harima, immediately to the West of Settsu province where Ieyasu is currently located. Should these generals join with the large Hattori army that lurks nearby they could cause trouble for us. Naturally Saneatsu should be instructed to attempt to sabotage the army in question should it come near, but I feel it would be remiss of us not to take... pre-emptive measure against such an eventuality. Whilst it is not his forte I feel that Saneatsu ought to be given the opportunity to attempt to assassinate these three generals so that they are unable to pose a threat, it will cost little and it rewards peace of mind.” “Lastly, and again regarding Harima province, it would appear that the entire population in the area is Christian; every last man, woman and child has forsaken their native religion even though the Hattori themselves have done no such thing. This is only cause for concern for now because it would mean that capturing the province would be ill-advised unless we had a monk or other strong religious presence nearby, the provincial happiness would be atrocious and would no doubt lead to revolts. I mention this only to suggest that we leave it well alone for now, we have bigger fish to fry.” With her plans laid open she relaxed and began to smile again; the long campaign was drawing to a close, and with her personal problems taken care of she felt a sense of relief that had eluded her for a long time. “I think it is also worth pointing out that I noticed a slight disturbance within the castle town as I made my way back here. At first I thought that a carnival of fools had camped outside the walls, but then I recognised them as the handful of malcontents that fancied themselves a rebellion; frankly I doubt that there is much difference between the two. It is truly piteous that they choose to throw their lives away on a doomed endeavour such as this, with no chance of success, but then perhaps they are simply addled.” “No matter, I doubt that it is of any significant concern; tomorrow they will be a mere memory, red stains marring the landscape. Frankly it is hard to believe that such foolish people share the same world as me, breathe my air; disgusting.” |

Fujiko pondered what Chikage had just said for a moment. "We should lay siege to Kyoto as soon as possible. I'm not sure we'll have the time to implement all you're suggesting, but weakening the Shogun's army before the battle would certainly be a good idea. There's a single unit of katana samurai encamped outside the walls of the capital and we have a lot of metsuke in the area. Maybe we could use one to bribe that contingent, take it out of the equation?" "I wouldn't worry about Harima too much. We should hold our position in Settsu. I believe the Ikko-Ikki are planning a strike on that settlement. They're very proficient at converting a province, so it'll be off our plate." "My main concern is still the Takaoka. If that Hattori army strikes out at them while our forces are caught up at Kyoto, we might not have the time to reinforce them. Saneatsu should stay with them like a bug. Chikage, can you give orders for him to sabotage that army, if it enters Takaoka territory? As a personal favour to our allies and to me. I just can't in good conscience arrange Machiko-sama's marriage, if there's a real danger that the clan she marries into could be wiped off the map and we've put too much effort into it to lose that many provinces." |

Kurimoto thought for a second. Then with an idea he spoke "Yes, if we could keep that agent there he could sabotage the hattori army if they got close to the Takoaka. That way we would be able to capture Kyoto first, then regroup to take down that army. It allows us to focus more on taking Kyoto instead of focusing on taking down that army." |

“I needn’t worry about time, priestess, my agents are remarkably efficient. With the possible exception of Yorimasa’s assassination attempt I cannot fathom how it would take more than a season or two to have all of my pieces in place and taking action against the Hattori. Naturally they may not necessarily accomplish their goals, what with the heightened security that they will no doubt face, but they will certainly be able to make an attempt of it.” “As for the Takaoka, if it pleases you I shall have Saneatsu be vigilant should they become under threat. Hopefully, however, the Hattori will be kept busy; according to the reports of my agents they are facing large-scale rebellion within their western provinces that should keep any soldiers they have occupied. This is no pretend-rebellion either like the nuisance within our own lands, this is a serious threat to them as the rebels have already captured the provinces of Izumo and Mimasaka. It may yet be enough to distract their attention, but if not Saneatsu will be available.” |
