Ieyasu was sat in his bedroom alone. It was deadly silent, a small lamp dimly lit the room. He was focussing on a piece of parchment that was laid out in front of him on the table. He began to write on it.

"Congratulations you are the one that has been chosen to assume the role of Shinobi Elder for the clan. It was a very difficult decision, but after much deliberation I feel you would be best suited for the job. I found your manifesto to be most in line with the Tokugawa way of thinking and if you command your agents as you say you will, our military will find their work much easier in the long run. Seeing as I will be in the field against the Hattori, I make this decision knowing that I will have the best support possible from our agents.

I was very sorry to hear about your father and I'm sure you will make him proud with your contributions. Upon receipt of this letter make your way to Mikawa castle taking this letter with you as proof of your position. Upon arrival my father should meet you there as he is currently on his way back from Echigo and is looking forward to sitting in his hall once again. Do not let us down, I have put my trust in you.

Yours,
Tokugawa Ieyasu."

Ieyasu clapped his hands twice and Hitoshi entered the room. Ieyasu folded up the parchment and stamped it with the family seal.

"This is to go immediately to one Hirase Chikage. She is to be our new Shinobi Elder."

Hitoshi bowed in acknowledgement, plucked the letter from Ieyasu's grasp and then left the room quietly. Ieyasu stood up and rubbed his hands together and muttered to himself.

"Better get ready to leave for Wakasa soon, those Takoaka are going to pay for what they have done to our vassals."

Hirotada wearily swung his legs off his horse and somehow managed to jump down onto the ground without his legs giving way. It was a long journey and his whole body ached. Mikawa castle looked different, there was extensive building work taking place and Hirotada looked taken aback. Another man wearing a dark cloak slipped alongside Hirotada and did not say a word, merely stood there and waited for the Daimyo to make the first move.

Hirotada walked up the steps of the castle slowly taking in the changes that were instantly noticeable, the castle was growing considerably. As he reached the top, the doors were opened and Hitoshi stood waiting.

"Welcome home master I was made aware of your arrival."

Hirotada handed over his travelling cloak and ornate katana. The hooded figure was still stood by his side, Hitoshio glanced at the shape inquisitvely. Hirotada noticed Hitoshi's suspicion.

"Don't worry about him, he's my new head of security. Yoshihiro Boruton Henzai is his name. Ieyasu recommended him to me. It seems appropriate considering I am becoming more and more hated by the second. Not to mention our ex-Shinobi Elder proabably wants me dead, I also hear rumours of others that are plotting such downfalls for me. He will be overseeing the security of this castle and making sure I have the necessary protection whilst I go about my business. I have a few public visits planned soon. It's about time I engaged with my good people."

The Daimyo turned to Yoshihiro. "Hitoshi, show this man to his room. He will need to settle down before he gets to work. Oh and when you have done that make the preparations for our tea ceremony. It is to commence tomorrow, it shall be a celebration of the downfall of the Date leaders and their soon to be eradication. My officers, their aides and Yoshihiro here are all invited."

Hitoshi nodded and then handed Hirotada a letter. He then bowed and hurriedly walked off down the hallway, the cloaked figure gliding behind him.

Hirotada read the brief message,

"Father, I'm sorry I could not be here for your return. I hope I have kept things running to your specifications whilst you have been absent. God only knows how you keep those officers in line without blowing a gasket! A spot of trouble flared up in Wakasa which I have chosen to deal with personally. I will no doubt speak to you soon.

Your,

Ieyasu."

Hirotada sighed and rolled his eyes. "My son, it seems you have taken to avoiding me once again." The Daimyo slouched off towards the dining hall, his stomach crying out for food.

Mikawa castle was truly magnificent, inside and out its resplendent architecture and decor unlike anything that Chikage had ever had the luxury of seeing from up close before. The manor home of the family that had kept her captive for so long had indeed been a sight to behold, when she was not forced into the dank, cold servant’s quarters, but even that could not compare to what was before her now, the construction work doing on doing little to detract from its magnificence.

In contrast Chikage looked positively plain as she was being lead through the castle by a pair of guardsmen on the way to the daimyo’s hall. Much to Mole’s chagrin she still chose to wear the same typical kunoichi outfit that she had every day, jet black and loose fitting, with her medium dark hair tied behind her head in a ponytail. Oh how he had raged, “Improper” he called it, “ludicrous for someone in that position”; she paid little heed, keen to prove herself through her actions, not her appearance.

Despite her steadfast determination she found herself somewhat anxious, neither the officers nor the daimyo had properly seen her, or heard her voice, so there was no need for her to disguise her appearance, but she knew there was little chance of the high priestess being fooled by her false identity; she simply had to hope that Fujiko would stay silent about the issue, for there was little chance that she would be offered the time to stop and explain herself should she be outed before them.

There was no more time to contemplate, she had arrived. The other officers turned and stared at her as she entered the room, and she looked to each of them in turn, her eyes lingering particularly on Fujiko, as if to express a plethora of unsaid words.

In a single forced movement which felt unnatural for one with her upbringing she bowed before them.

"Greetings honoured officers of the Tokugawa. I am Hirase Chikage, and I have come to serve the daimyo."

Fujiko coughed. "Well, that tea ceremony was delightful. Now let's get down to business, shall we?" She cast a glance at the empty spot where Motohisa usually sat, then shrugged her shoulders. He'd turn up. Eventually. Of course that made the one thing this council had been lacking the whole time even more evident. A lack of planning and discussion.

"First of all I'm happy to report that the Christian situation on Sado is less severe than we had anticipated. Their population is only 3.6%. That will almost take care of itself. With the Sake Den in place, provinical happiness is almost ensured. To tear it down and build a temple from scratch then would seem a serious waste of money and manpower. Instead it would be more beneficial to improve the gold mine to counter the effects of losing the Hattori trade and improve the harbor to a trading port. I leave that matter in the hands of the Tatami Master, when and if he comes back."

"Chikage-san, Christian population in Htachi is at 12.1% right now. I'd like to keep the monk there at least until that number drops below 10%. If you think after that, that his talents might be better used elsewhere, I'd be happy to discuss that next term."

"Relations with the Ikki are at an all-time high. Unless we do something stupid in our foreign relations, they're as steady as a rock. That doesn't change the fact that they'll keep marching north and thus away from the soon to be main front line."

She turned to the Sword Master. "If I may make a suggestion, Yusei-san. The Date campaign has dragged on for far too long already. We should have mopped them up months ago instead of idling around in Miyagi for half a year. Why not take the army from Echigo and put them on the nearby ships? Whether Hirotada-sama wants to take that trip is up to him, of course. But the troops could sail north and land on the coast of Ugo in less than a year. Between them and the bribed army the last two Date settlements could fall almost simultaneously."

"When all is said and done, we can put the majority of both armies on the ships and sail them down to Kaga. Thus having a reserve where the real action will be and the Ikki army will finally turn back and march south."

Fujiko took a deep breath. "Now, as for my real headache. Ieyasu-sama has a keen eye to strike at the right time and Wakasa was taken with minimal casualties. The problem is that the Ikki were supposed to hold our flank in the coming war with the Hattori. Now it's twisting in the breeze. You mentioned making the Takaoka our vassals, my lord. I concur that this is probably the best option. They shouldn't be in much danger from the Hattori hinterlands and can easily hold that side. The question then becomes what Ieyasu-sama's army will do after their sojourn to Tango. It might just be a good idea to have him move on to Tamba. Then Kyoto and the Hattori mainlands would be caught in a nutcracker between himself and Mochimori's army coming in from the north. At least it would take less time, before he sees action."

Fujiko turned back to Yusei, being very careful not to make the gritting of her teeth too audible. "Of course, those movements are merely suggestions based on my own observations. I have no idea whether that works with the Sword Master's plans to surround Kyoto. You've been holding out on us for two years, my dear Yusei. It's time to finally reveal that master plan you've been hatching all this time. We're all ears."

Chikage breathing was heavy, she was apprehensive about her first impression as an officer and needed to make it count; “I'm sure we have little to worry about when it comes to Hitachi, however if it suits the daimyo to remove any trace of resentment towards his rule then I see no reason not to allow that monk to continue his work until the Christian population has been reduced as you have suggested, Fujiko. For the moment there is little else that he could be put to use for, as a monk is little more than a target in Hattori lands, and we can ill afford their ninja to get more proficient than they already are.”

“As for my current plans, I am sure the daimyo is well aware of them as it would appear that they have already been put in motion, to an extent, but I shall outline them briefly for the rest of the officers.”

“The Hattori are rather well entrenched in their position, it would take a lot of skill or attrition to take down the multiple large armies, including one lead by their daimyo, and even then Tokugawa casualties would be heavy. But, if they can be whittled down and their numbers thinned without ever having to send an army against them it will make any military push against them considerably easier.”

“In order to do that all three of our ninja are to enter their lands and cause as much havoc as possible, by which I mean sabotaging buildings, and taking any opportunities to cause mayhem that they are likely to succeed at; this should help them to build their suitable skills ready for the upcoming military campaign.”

“Ideally I would like to see two ninja skilled at sabotaging armies, and one ninja skilled at assassination. These ninja should them be more than capable of poisoning armies to delay their movements and even cut down their numbers, as well as assassinating their generals. This should swing any war decisively in our favour, and will be well worth the meagre financial investment that is the cost of the ninja’s actions.”

“As for the armies themselves, I insist that each army be overseen by a metsuke. The Hattori ninjas are unparallel in their skills, and should we not account for this our generals’ lives will be at risk. At metsuke for each army will seriously reduce the chance of incurring any casualties, as well as potentially allowing us to apprehend their agents. Ideally I would like to see these in place before the war begins, because I have no doubts that their shinobi will be upon us the moment that conflict erupts.”

She exhaled heavily; hoping that the soundness of her strategy would be sufficiently up to the daunting task of impressing the other officers.

Limping, samurai approached the guards towards the entrance of the Daimyo’s Hall. Every second he was repeating his orders over and over in his head, he must not forget them. Looking at the samurai, his armour was grubby and the bow he had before was not on him. The samurai opened his mouth and croaked “I have an urgent message to deliver to the Daimyo and the officers about the Tatami Master, I must see them quickly. Another short samurai is also on his way here, he’s currently preparing something, so when he arrives let him in with me. Now there is no time to waste, let me see the officers and the daimyo, we must hurry. If you refuse me access then you will rue this day, this information is of critical importance, and they all need to know”.

((curently awaiting a reply from the guards))

Hirotada leant forward in his throne, his hands pressed together at the fingertips, his face full of concentration.

"I am glad to see that Ieyasu-kun has kept things in order in my absence. Throughout my time in Sado I had visions of returning home to a defunct council and a burnt down castle."

The Daimyo smirked, he clearly knew his son was more then capable of overseeing the clan.

"I must agree with you Fujiko-san, that the Date have been left clinging on to life for too long now. I was hoping that my victory in Sado would be the final blow but it appears the army in the mainland is dragging its heels, maybe they still have some loyalty left to their former masters. The price to pay for bribery I suppose. I'm sure Yusei-san will ensure the Date are dispatched of within the year and the remainder of the troops put to good use. At least I hope so as that will be the least of his problems. Oh and I have no intentions of heading north again, my fighting days are now over. Let the younger ones enjoy their glory, my home is now here overseeing the final moments of our long campaign.

Ieyasu-kun is a headstrong man, I'm sure you have all seen that. I feel he will probably fight tooth and nail to keep making advancements towards the Hattori and Kyoto from this point on. I doubt he will want to return to see my face when he could be exacting his revenge on his former captors. Thus his move to Wakasa probably signals his intent to position himself for the impending war. If he moves on to Tango, making the Takoaka our vassals seems a feasible option; we get some more income at a time when it is most needed and an ally in the upcoming war.

Hirotada stood up from his throne, his face conveyed deep seriousness.

"Chikage-san, your ideas regarding supporting our armies with your agents I find most pleasing. Playing the Hattori at their own game is sure to enrage them such that no doubt they will make a mistake or two out of anger. We will need to be prepared for this. It is imperative that both you and Yusei-san work closely together to ensure our armies and agents mingle together with fluidity. If they can work in cohesion, perhaps we will see a systematic takedown of a clan, never seen before. It will provide the means necessary to send a message to all who dare to oppose us that we are not to be trifled with.

I am assuming you all feel we are ready for this war to start. If that is the case then much planning should be afoot because I will not walk into a war with the Hattori with fragmented vague orders. Only when I am satisfied that you appear to understand the true extent of this war, will I give the order to break the alliance."

Hirotada began to slowly walk towards his officers with his arms open wide, his voice raised slightly.

"The time for secret plans is over. I need to see what the future holds."

A guard entered the hall as the Daimyo turned to head back to his throne.

"Excuse me my Lord, a Samurai is stood outside. He brings a message about Motohisa-sama."

Hirotada swung round rapidly, a look of panic in his face. He could not afford to lose an officer of such importance at such a crucial time.

"Send him in immediately, don't just stand there!"

The samurai limped into the hall, being trailed by the guards. Suddenly, the Samurai collapsed onto his knees and began rapidly talking, shaking his head all the time. “My daimyo, the… Tatami Master, he’s…he’s, he’s, I don’t know his fate.” He took a deep breath before continuing. “We were in the province of Kaga, the Tatami Master was examining the city and he encountered a monk who said he saw great suffering on some of the farms. So the Tatami Master, not one to allow people to suffer, followed him along with me and the rest of his guard that came with him on his trip around the land. We were still following the monk when night arrived, but he assured us we were almost there and there we would be able to rest. We had arrived at a fairly large house owned by a friend of the monk who was related to the farmers, and he bid us to spend the night there and he would show us the problem in the morning.

However, things did not go as planned. We awoke in the middle of the night to find the house alight, a blazing ball of fire. I was sleeping near the exit to the house so I could escape easily. I do not know what happened to the others in there, but only a few of us died. I wish I knew how the Tatami Master escaped that alive, near his room was where the blaze started according to the Captain, and I assume the captain is the one who got the Tatami Master out alive. That man is amazing, just amazing.

In any case we were moving back towards the city of Kaga, being unable to find any trace of the monk, to carry on our journey as quickly as possible. We got very little sleep that night; it was too dangerous to sleep out in the open with that incident that had occurred. However, we had not left danger behind.

As we were walking through a mountain pass, smoke appeared all around us, we couldn’t see a thing. Horses like the mountains little anyway but this did not help. We tried to escape from this strange smoke as quickly as possible; however we encountered a wall of yari blocking us. Smoke made us unable to see then men behind, but we suspected they were there. I looked around and saw us surrounded on another three sides by walls of yari, their ranks never ending. We were boxed in. Screaming at the top of his lungs, the captain ordered us to charge downhill towards the direction we had just come from. In one colossal charge we shattered that line of yari but many of us lost our horses and the yari behind us was slowly advancing like death itself, slaying many of our men. There was no escape. After the yari blocking us had completely been annihilated only the captain, I and one other had our horses left. The Tatami Master was dismounted, his leg wounded. Yelling, the Captain orders me and the other samurai to break through and find assistance, to tell people the story. He said the Tatami Master trusts his personal bodyguards at Mikawa with more than just his life. I looked back, and saw death and destruction. Many men had already met an honourable death in battle, and slaying many of the attackers assailing us. Swords from the shadows were now slicing up the loyal bodyguards. The tatami Master was lying on the ground. I could not see if he was dead. The captain, was now dismounted, and fought like a demon to protect the Tatami Master. Gracefully whirling around the battlefield with his Katana, he was slashing the un-honourable scum and sending them to the afterlife. Around him only a few of the other guard remained and they were being overwhelmed by the onslaught of our attackers. Still, I rode onwards. Delivering the story and the message was of paramount importance."

Having finished his story, the samurai was panting heavily, and was struggling to even keep himself up in his collapsed position. “I am sure how I fared on the journey back is unimportant, it was not a nice journey but I got here with my message, and my companion had sadly died. Remember the captains words the Tatami Master trusts his personal bodyguards at Mikawa with more than just his life. I have spoken to some of them already, and one of them said he will be here shortly. Officers and my Daimyo, please, we need to do something about this. “The samurai was panting more heavily now. “Please, save him, avenge him” The samurai finally completely collapsed on the floor; and was silent.

Fujiko had listened to the man intently. She had been suspicious from the moment he had entered the hall and his wild tale had only proven her guess. She stood up.

"My lord, that has to be the dumbest story I've ever heard." Everyone assembled turned toward her.

"An attempt on the Tatami Master's life by fire I can believe. Frankly he's not the most likable fellow. But a military force unknown to us in Kaga? Walls of spearmen springing up from the darkness? Somebody is trying to play us for fools.

Even if it were to be believed that our scouts could miss such a threat, that man's tale is made up out of whole cloth. Firstly, there's a garrison of 1.760 stationed in Kaga. Why on earth would he not seek help from them? His supposed frantic flight back here is non-sensical. Even if you were to believe that he could not reach castle Kaga, there are dozens of other garrisons along the way, all of which would be closer to respond than Mikawa. Even Ieyasu-sama and Mochimori-sama would have been closer."

Fujiko pointed dramatically at the samurai. "Yet that man passed by all this possible aid to come here, instead of at least getting word to them? Just because the Tatami Master trusts his personal bodyguard in Mikawa? Even more the Tatami Master's life doesn't seem to have been as important to him as getting his new advisor appointed. Why would you bring word about that first, when time is of the essence and the Tatami Master's life hangs in the balance? You know the answer. Because his life is not in danger, not from imaginary spearmen."

"This stinks, my lord. And I don't mean that man's sweaty armour. His story has more holes in it than the rotting corpse of Uesugi Kenshin. No man on earth can be so dumb as to act in the way he did. There is only one possible explanation. It's a trap! At best the Tatami Master is dead and at peace now. At worst he's in on the plot. That man should be detained and questioned. Maybe our Shinobi Elder can wring the truth from him."

Fujiko took a deep breath and sat back down again. "Whatever you do, lord Hirotada. I urge you to do it quickly. As you've said yourself, we have much planning to do for the coming war. We cannot jeopardaize the entire clan to save the life of one man, if indeed it is even in peril. You must take over his duties for now, Hirotada-sama, and we must get on with the planning. And this is the last time I'm gonna say it, I hope the Sword Master will finally lay out his plans for the Hattori war. Unless he's too busy harassing my advisor?"

Yusei had listened to the samurai's tale as he sat there thinking about last night's talk with Icorisu. He shook his head in disbelief at the end of the story.

"For once I agree with Fujiko. This story makes no sense! From what I've seen from Motohisa-sama, he wouldn't fall into a simple trap like that. Why would you run all the way to the officers in Mikawa to help him than running to the Kaga Garrison. Surely they could commence a full investigation on the Tatami Master's dissappearance. I have no more thoughts on the matter."

He turned at Fujiko,"Fujiko, it seems you heard my conversation with him. Yes, I was attempting to manipulate him. He was getting suspicious of me, dangerously suspicous. I cannot have advisors start shouting out accusations at officers. I have nothing to hide. My ultimate plan does not involve endangering the Daimyo's life. In fact, for my plan to work, Ieyasu and Hirotada must live. That is why I serve. You can be paranoid all you want, you can hate me, despise me, call investigations, at tempt to arrrest. But I have nothing to hide on this matter. All I wanted was his support for my ultimate plan, if I had to manipulate him, then I did."

"Now to matters of the Hattori war, I've edited my plan for war with the Hattori with the capture of Wakasa. Ieyasu will have to start advancing to the North. Mochimori is to lead the main advance into Hattori land preferable Omi. We may have to build and commission an army for Mochikata, so that Mochimori will have support."

Turning to Chikage, "Chikage-sama, I ask how long until your ninjas will be ready. If it will not take too long, then I shall halt the advance until they are into respective positions."

"For the start of the Hattori war, we will have to try and take Iga. This massive castle will be a great forward position for when we want to finally take Kyoto. Mochimori will advance past Omi supported by ninja and hopefully cross the Kyoto border into Iga at a reasonable time. With Iga captured we can supply troops to provinces all around Kyoto. It will be a great way to kick off this war. Ieyasu, is to take the provinces west of Wakasa, hopefully able to crush the northern resistance. From there we can head south and take (Im drawing a blank on the name *facepalm*) just north of Kyoto. From there we have obtained one launch point against Kyoto."

"Your thoughts are welcome."

"Tamba," Fujiko supplied with a sigh, "the name you're looking for is Tamba, Yusei-san. I'd like to point out that this province is currently held by the Hatano. If Ieyasu-sama moves decisively after pacifying Tango, we might even be able to take the province before the war with the Hattori itself commences."

"There's one more thing you might want to consider. We could move the garrison from Kaga to Wakasa. From there they'd be in a great position to lend aid to either of our vassals or to reinforce the main front lines."

Unbelievable, that man, she thought to herself. He even admits to trying to subvert my advisor right in front of the daimyo. Is he trying to cover up something else or is he truly that arrogant?

"A great point Fujiko, and I thank you for reminding me of the name of Tamba. Yes, if things can go well for us, Tamba can be secured before the war actually starts. Moving the garrison from Kaga to Wakasa is fine, we no longer need them to protect the Ikko Ikki since we've kinda secured there protection."

I'm sorry I have to act so arrogant, Fujiko, but for the safety of my ultimate plan, you must despise me more...

“My lord, I must feel that I must also voice my doubts about the validity of the tale which we have heard. Even it is was possible for our enemies to march a “never ending” wall of troops into Tokugawa lands unnoticed, and I assure you that it is not, why would whoever is responsible send what could be hundreds of incompetent yari to do what a single ninja is capable of? The Tokugawa’s enemies have either been felled by our armies or our assassins, not by some phantom force of soldiers.”

“We are on the precipice of war, my lord. I implore you to consider your safety; you are the heart of the Tokugawa. If you wish to consider the Head Priestess’ proposal that I ‘extract’ the truth from this... individual, well I am more than capable of arranging that, should it please you.”

She turned to Yusei. “As for the outbreak of war, the ninja should be present within Hattori lands within half a year to three seasons of time, and I would have them commit acts of subterfuge against the Hattori until you are ready to begin, to hone their skills. More importantly in this case are the Metsuke, should you wish for the generals in charge of our armies to stay alive this war cannot start until all of the armies near Hattori lands are properly overseen; that may take an additional season, depending on how long it takes for one of our Metsuke to reach the Tokugawa Ieyasu’s army, and whether or not the Ashikaga monk in Mikawa causes us further problems... but I have no doubt that you will agree that any wait is worthwhile to protect the life of our daimyo’s son.”

“Regarding the aforementioned monk, we must ensure that he is made a priority target for our assassins before he is allowed to cause more havoc in our lands. As for the beginning of the war... whilst Kyoto may be a tempting target, please consider that it is a large castle town, and have a respectable garrison. I have no doubt that our armies would be able to take it, but they could not do so without incurring casualties. For such a move to be made we will need to ensure that the two large armies the Hattori possess are either far from the combat or otherwise incapacitated; our ninja ought to be able to assist with those, but it will require some discretion on the part of you and our lord in assessing the safety of such a push when that time comes.”

“There is also a further matter that I would like to bring up. Our enemies are numerous now, and more powerful than they have ever been in the past; in times such as these we must turn to what the Tokugawa do best in order to ensure victory: Intrigue. In order to gather information on our enemies and to better assassinate their leaders request the facilities to train Geisha assassins. This alone is unfortunately not my place to decide, for such a task would request extensive building work, as well as learning the art of Ninjutsu Mastery; seeing as how we have a suspicious lack of a Tatami Master, I was wondering what the Head Priestess would think of offering such a thing up as a Clan Proposal.”

Yusei was impressed at the new Shinobi Elder's plans.

"Chikage-sama, I thank you for the information. Yes, we will wait until the necessary training is undergone for the ninjas. I will allow all Generals that will fight the Hattori to have a Metsuke as well. I do want to start this war though, and if it starts early, we may have to push some metsuke back in accordance of taking the initiative in the war."

"I cannot stop you from sending the armies in there without any protection from the Hattori assassins, but just take into account whose lives you put on the line by doing so. I do not think that our lord would be pleased to find news that his son was slain by a Hattori assassin just so that the war could begin early. If we rush into this without thinking we risk much."

"I will have some of the ninja be sent to the Iga province to scout ahead of the armies, that should allow us to make a more informed decision taking into account the position of the Hattori war machine."
