Fujiko smiled. "I see that we share certain views about life, Chikage-san. If you want something done right, never send a man to do a woman's job. Geisha assassins would certainly be an asset to have in the future. They are more specialised in such missions than their male counterparts.

I will take your request to study 'Ninjutsu Mastery' under advisement. There hasn't been any other proposal in the Clan Assembly yet. The next vote will be called tomorrow. Unless something better comes up until then, I'll gladly suggest it to our good people and let them decide."

Whilst the officers talked about business the lone Samurai was kneeled on the floor in the corner. He looked rather pathetic, waiting nervously to be addressed, particularly having had his story picked apart by the attentive officers.
The conversation died down and eventually a silence fell over the hall, throughout the recent talk the Daimyo had not taken his eyes of the Samurai. His eyes narrowed.

"You take me for a fool boy!?" The Daimyo's tone was threatening, the Samurai could be seen shaking, whether it was fear or mock exhaustion was anybody's guess.

"You come into my hall and spout some nonsense in attempt to lure me into a trap!?? His voice continued to raise, he straightened up in his throne.

"You think your lies can outwit the minds of me and my officers. THE ONLY FOOL IN HERE IS YOU!" Hirotada leapt out of his throne causing it to tip over and fall to the floor with an echoing thud. His guards straigtened up instantly to attention. "Take him to the cells and have Yoshihairo interrogate him, I want to know who is behind this insult. Also, tell him to send out scouts to try and locate Motohisa. My officers need not waste time on this imbecile, they are busy enough." The guards nodded and quickly and effortlessly hoisted the Samurai off his feet and out of the doors quicker then he could protest.

The Daimyo's throne had been put right without him noticing, he merely sat back in it and took a moment to calm himself.

"Right, in the absence of the Tatami Master I will assume his role. I notice from the scroll of fate that some of the building work went unfinished last season, that will be completed this season. All funding for troops and agents recruitment and missions will be dealt with when the time comes. I will assess the situation during the season and have funds made available when necessary. If fund are not available to suit everyone's needs then I will prioritse what I deem most important.

I am in full agreement with Chikage-san's reasoning with regards to Metsuke. Each general will have a Metsuke overseeing their army, this is a priority and must be done quickly, preferrably before the war begins. We have not come this far to lose honourable men due to neglecting basic security and impatientness.

Finally, I want each of your opinions as to when you think this war will start. Are we going to wait for ninja to be in place, are we going to head straight in, are we going to wait for them to attack us? What should be the trigger point and how are we going to manage the breaking of the alliance."

Hirotada felt himself speaking more and more quickly. He sighed and slumped back in his throne and took a moment to collect his thoughts again.

"My lord, from my perspective we would be ready to begin once the ninja are in place, they will provide us with all the information we need to organise troop movements, and can impair the Hattori's armies. They should be capable of being in position within a year's time, if all goes well."

"The only thing of note is that we could risk provoking the Hattori into aggression should our ninja be caught in acts of sabotage, but that scenario isn't hugely likely, even should they fail they will more than likely escape."

Fujiko closed her eyes and laid her head back into her shoulders. "If I add up everything that has been said here, it seems there are a certain set of objectives that should be completed, before the war can commence.

1. The ninja should be in Hattori lands
2. Ieyasu and Mochimori should have a Metsuke each to accompany them.
3. That troublesome monk near Mikawa has to be dealt with.
4. Ieyasu must have made the Takaoka our vassal and idealy taken Tamba as well.
5. The garrison from Kaga must have been moved to Wakasa.

Please correct me, if I've left anything out.

As for how to start the war, I've already made a suggestion as to how that can be achieved without breaking the alliance on our end last year. We simply ask them for 10.000 koku and threaten them a little in the process. Possibly this has to happen twice, then they'll most likely use our vassals as an excuse to declare war on us. Then it's a simple matter of siding with our vassal. The war will commence and the Hattori will be the bad guys with no diplomatic penalty to us."

"Fujiko-sama you have everything correct. At least in my point of view."

"Chikage-sama, if you insist on waiting for your agents to be ready then that is fine, I shall halt the troops until all agents are in place. I do not wish to argue with our new Shinobi Elder, consider it done Chikage-sama."

"Now if you excuse me, I must leave the hall for a bit. I will return in an hour."

Calmly, a man with a scroll clutched in his hand strolled into the castle grounds. His clothing was mismatched peasant garb and his build short and slim. Hailing the guards, he explained that he had an urgent proposal for the Daimyo and the officers. Without waiting for an answer, the man barged past the guards while they just stared at the obnoxious who walked right by them. He carried on this trend of explaining his purpose to guards while simultaneously barging by them until he eventually reached the Daimyo’s hall, where the officers looked at this unexpected arrival in a suspicious and confused manner, each officer with their own unique expression on their face. Armed guards trailed behind the man, alert and preparing for any danger, but not taking any action.

Pulling out his scroll, the man gazed down and began to silently read it. His eyes peered over the scroll and he announced “The people I work for own a samurai called Tanchi Kagna, I believe he belong to this clan. From what information we have gathered, he worked for the Tatami Master as his Captain of his Guard. I believe you may desire him back, if so you should tell me now what we will receive if we return this man to you. Before you get any ideas, I should warn you if I do not return by my anticipated time, the man will be executed. Also, if I am mistreated during my stay I shall have him executed as well. I shall record your offers on this scroll here in my hands, and I would request it is signed by someone who would handle this case, just so I can evidence to my superiors that I have successfully spoken to you. We are open to any offers, and you may ask some questions however I will be unable to tell you much, I am merely the messenger. Without further ado, let the discussions begin I am sure you have better things to be doing so let’s make this quick.” The man lowered his scroll further and gazed around at the officers and the Daimyo, awaiting a response.

My lord, this man has the audacity to barge his way into your home and make demands of you, I insist that you decline his proposal and execute him at once! Had it not been for your esteemed presence I would have done so myself immediately; he expects you to humble yourself before him and pays you none of the respect that you rightly deserve, let us be off with his dishonourable head.

To offer him anything more than a swift death is to show weakness in the face of the filth that he serves, the Tokugawa do not bargain with criminals or scum. Say the word, my lord, and I will ensure that his blood will stain the floor before he next takes breath.

"A MAN CANNOT VANISH FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH! I WANT HIM FOUND!" Hirotada yelled at one of his guards. He had just received an update on of the hunt for Motohisa, it wasn't going well. "If he is not found soon, I'm going to have to find a new Tatami Master. As caniving as he was, he was at least competent at his job. Recruiting someone new so close to a full scale war with the Hattori is not ideal. Now get out of my sight." Hirotada nonchantly waved his hand towards the doors and the guard scurried off avoiding the Daimyo's glare.

The hall was empty. He ambled up to his throne and fell back into it causing it to creak noisily under the strain. He tilted his head back, thoughts of the impending war were running through his mind. As he closed his eyes the doors opened, a messenger bowed before him tentatively approaching Hirotada. He opened his eyes, a look of frustration on his face.

"Yes...?" He groaned.

"My Lord, I bring an important message." The young boy handed the Daimyo a rolled up scroll. It contained the seal of the Ikko Ikki. With intrigue Hirotada unravelled the parchement. He spent the next few minutes scanning the message. A smile then crossed his face. He stood up from his throne almost as quickly as he had fallen into it causing the messenger to step back.

"The Hattori have made the first move it seems. WE ARE AT WAR MY BOY!" Hirotada paced up and down the hall whilst shouting instructions at the messenger. "I want you to send word to the Ikki that we are to honour our agreement, they will receive our protection and send word to the Hattori to confirm we will not be siding with them." The messenger started to scribble notes down hastily.

"Then I want you to inform my officers to come here at once, it seems the fun starts now. Oh and make sure Fujiko-san begins the preparations immediately to ensure my daughter returns here safely from the clutches of the Hattori dogs. Oh and my son must know the war has started and that his Metsuke is soon to arrive. Then he will await the orders from our Kensei regarding his next move. Finally inform Yoshihairo that I will be speaking with him soon, now that the war with the Hattori has commenced I will be expecting constant vigilance. That will do for now."

The messenger bowed and then left.

..............................................................

Hirotada almost balked with disgust at the scruffy looking man that had entered the hall unannounced. He heard the man's proposition and then looked at Chikage as she took offence at what had just happened. The Daimyo then turned to the man. "My Shinobi Elder speaks the truth, I have had far less intrusive men executed for much more minor infringements then this. You have about ten seconds to convince me what reason I would have to pay for some random samurai to be released and why I shouldn't have your head on a plate."

His face still clam, the man stared the Daimyo in the eyes and calmly said “Do not think it is a secret the Tatami Master is missing, everyone knows that he’s vanished. This man is connected with him; he may be valuable to you. You will want to find your Tatami Master as swiftly as possible; this man may accelerate the process. He is also quite the ferocious fighter and strong willed, but still we have managed to detain him despite this. He would be a valuable asset to you and a successful agreement with my superiors may grant you more favourable relations with them, many a great things can result from that” Having finished speaking, the man stood silent and continued to stare the Daimyo in the eyes.

Yusei laughed as the man finished his talk,"A very good, grand political manuver indeed. You seek to blackmail us into buying your favor for a man that can lead us to the Tatami Master. I can see right through your scheme. I say execute this man my lord. There is a chance he is bluffing, and such favorable relations from an unknown clan, family, or organization is quite unimportant. We have matters more important involving the Hattori war. The likes of you scum coming in here to que up more investigation is more troubling then helpful.

“Your disrespect has gone too far, you are arrogant indeed to stand in front of the daimyo and attempt to bargain with him. I have never met the Tatami Master, but his many years of absence failure are shameful, and do you honestly believe that the Tokugawa hold any consideration for the “favourable relations” with whatever vermin you serve?” Chikage began to seethe with anger, all the teachings of her early life never having left her; utmost respect for those in charge having been instilled in her since she was capable of understanding such concepts, and the daimyo was her superior now.

She drew her sword and pointed it at the man, threateningly. “Enough of this; my lord, I beseech you to allow me to remove this pitiful excuse for a human being from your halls and send him to meet his heathen ancestors, wherever their rotting corpses may lie!”

"Chikage-sama, patience, this man can be outsmarted and manipulated. Look at him, his arrogance is beyond repair. How about we appeal to his ego."

Yusei turned to the man,"Before we have any consideration for bargaining we must have absolute and full proof of having this Captain and that he knows information. You must obviously know something that we don't if you calmly make such demands."

Hirotada oustretched his hand towards Chikage calmly. "I understand your anger Chikage-san but I want no blood shed in this hall, we are not babarians. Please lower your weapon." She began to do so reluctantly. Although her weapon was lowered she did not take her eyes of the trespasser. Hirotada's calm voice turned curt as he began to address the man that had entered the hall.

"You can return to your masters with this message. The Tokugawa have no reason to want the favour of any such lowlives as your masters. We are not to be held to ransom by any man. I do not fear the Hattori, I do not fear the Shogun, why should I bend to the petty demands of anyone else. Before much longer the Tokugawa will unite all of Japan, you think I have achieved such success by rolling over to the whims of fools. I pity you, your masters probably sent you hoping for you to die, they couldn't have truly expected us to accept these demands, no sane person would.

As for the information this samurai holds. I have eyes and ears everywhere. I will find the Tatami master without your master's 'help'. If he is not found, I have plenty more loyal Tokugawa clansmen itching to step forwards for the role. That's if I don't take to overseeing such matters myself. I am not incapable of doing so; there was a time I was in charge of the whole of this clan's affairs contrary to what your masters may think. You may leave here unharmed for I want you to pass the message on. Enter my grounds again however and your feet won't touch the ground."

The man nodded his head and calmly said “I shall deliver your message, but I would like to say to everyone present that I shall remain in the city for a day to restock before I leave again, if you have anything you wish to say you will be able to find me in the few stalls dotted around the city or in the Sake den. I would like to for one last time highly recommend you reconsider the offer as I believe you do not understand how important this may be to you. That’s all I have to say, farewell” With that, the man calmly strolled out of the castle, completely ignoring all of the guards, a small smug grin on his face.

"I shall do as you say, my lord. Should you, at any point, reconsider your non-violent stance then you know who to turn to. After all, how many limbs does a man need to deliver a message?"
