As Kaiso his last arrow, his instructor raised his hand to cease. "Very good. You all have earned a break. Relax, have something to eat, whatever. I expect you all back here in thirty minutes." Kaiso removed his headgear and wiped his forehead as he walked over to the makeshift sake den within Noto's castle. A couple of his fellow bowmen and a few yari trainees had gathered together to discuss their training. The young man joined them at the table and poured himself a drink. An older member of his regiment eyed Kaiso with interest. "Aomori Kaiso, wasn't it?" Sipping down the sake, Kaiso returned a glance. "Is there some reason you remember me of all your fellows?" "Oh, it's just that I heard you lost your brother in the siege. I'm just surprised you'd volunteer to join the army that killed him." Kaiso narrowed his eyes. Glancing past the ashigaru, he saw the Tokugawa metsuke glance over to their table. Either this man is a plant to weed out dissent or just some a troublemaker. "First off, he didn't die here in Noto. He was forced into the Uesugi army into a futile attack on Tokugawa lands. If anything definitive can be said about the Tokugawa, it's that their territory is large and they're really good at defending castles. All blame for his death goes to the Uesugi and them alone. What else would I have to complain about? I've seen more improvements to Noto done in the past season then I have in the past five years. Add to that the recent tax break and I have no complaints whatsoever." He poured himself another drink. "And lastly... who wants to sit tight with the recent realm divide? Tokugawa versus the world? I want to be a part of that, even if it's just a remote garrison." He lifted his drink. "To interesting times!" A small cheer echoed around his table as everyone took a drink. The elder ashigaru just smiled as the metsuke looked away contentedly. Edited by Kimarous, 19/08/2011 - 04:57 pm.

It was a cold autumn dusk and the yellow and red leaves followed the wind in an uncomprehensible pattern. Hino knew he had to find a shelter soon, the roads were dangerous, espcially now that the wars ravaged everywhere. The cold and exaustion were other reasons that made him stop at a burned up village. Visible markings of pillage were seen everywhere, and some decomposing bodies shared the peacefull environment. Soon enough Hino found a usable cottage that had been spared by the fire that consumed the once inhabited settlement. But before opening the door he heard voices, at first it seemed to be two males, but later on another joined the conversation. - Deserting was probably the best thing to do. - first voice. - I agree. Battle is not for me, every time I faced the enemies in battle I always tried to fall to the backlines. - second voice - Good choice. What I did when our army went to battle was run away, and then join back when the battle was done. - third voice - I'll now return to Mino, and resume my life. - second voice. - And you think you'll be accepted? We deserted the tokugawa lines. No city under their rule will accept us back. - first voice - Most likely they will execute you for treason. - third voice. - Then what should we do? - second voice - We have to obtain horses and food, and then we'll traver to the hatori lands, there we may find ourselves a normal life. - third voice - And where will we get horses and food for such a voyage? - second voice - We will rob them from passing by travellers. War is already bringing it's fruits thought Hino as he took a step back, in the process stepping on a burnt piece of wood that cracked under his weight. In matter of seconds, three soldiers wearing the tokugawa uniforms, made a quick appearance. They had spears in their hands. - Speak of the devil - said a tall man that Hino identified as the owner of the third voice - a horse. Is this yours stranger? - when Hino kept silence the man pinted his spear towards him. - Doesn't matter, it is now ours. He advanced and made his spear advanced with a thrust. Minutes later Hino stood with his sword covered in blood. This were the first men he had ever killed. A mixture of feelings struck Hino when he realized it. He spent long years training with his master, but never had he participated in a battle, or even put a injury on a man. It's time to move, this places are more dangerous then they seem. Despite the lack of sleep and stamina, Hino got on his horse and faded into the night. |

The brisk night air chilled Chikage to the bone as she gazed at the small village in the valley below; the pinpricks of light betraying its position. She had hoped to simply pass all civilization by on her journey to fulfil her grizzly task, but the trek towards Echigo Province was far longer than she could have anticipated, and her provisions were running low; unless she acquired some food soon her journey would come to a slow and painful end from starvation. Swiftly but silent she glided though the veil of darkness on to her target. She passed by fields and farms, crops were no good to her on their own, nor was there much purpose in slaughtering livestock, their meat would not keep for long and it would have to be cooked by a fire, something she aimed to avoid to ensure that she wasn’t given away. No, in order to sustain herself she would have to rob food from the homes of these villagers, a petty crime, but a necessary one; and few would suspect that random burglaries were committed by an assassin, so she was confident that she would not give herself away. Still, she did not relish the though. It was the dead of night by the time she reached the residential area of the village, and the population slept soundly. She wondered for how long that would last considering the recent division of the realm following the Shogun’s decision; no doubt in a few weeks time the entirety of Tokugawa controlled Japan would be on high-alert. Focussing her mind on the more pressing task ahead of her, she crept silently through the tightly-packed village, attempting to discern the most opportune target for her intentions, difficult thought it was. She judged that the majority of people were farmers or labourers, but it wasn’t long before she ran into the tell-tale home of a wealthier merchant, no doubt possessing a much more impressively stocked pantry. Single-mindedly she crept her way inside. The interior was pitch black and she moved slowly, guiding herself through the home by touch, listening carefully for the breathing of its sleeping inhabitants, letting her know which rooms to avoid. Once she discovered the unmistakeable smells and chill of the pantry she lit a small lamp to light up the small room and began greedily snatching anything that her pack would carry. She froze with a start, the gliding sound of a door being opened alerting her that she was not the only person awake in the house. But how? She had made no mistakes, she had been perfectly silent. She put out the light and pressed herself down by the wall, hidden from the sight of anyone who entered the room. Sure enough she heard light footsteps inching their way to her position. Light footsteps? A child, pinching a snack in the middle of the night? It didn’t matter, the door slid open and the room was filled with the dim light of the child’s own lamp. Before being noticed Chikage grabbed the small form by the head, covering the little girl’s mouth with her hand, the lamp dropping to the floor. In the failing light she could see absolute fear in the child’s eyes, and for a moment she hesitated; but with little choice to save her own skin she slit the girls throat with a grim determination, holding her tightly against her chest as the lifeblood quickly ebbed out of the unfortunate victim’s body. She had wanted to avoid this, a random burglary was one thing, but people would start to raise a fuss should they discover children with their throats cut; killing the infants of merchants or peasants was not on her agenda. Acting fast, she dragged the body outside the pantry and placed it on the tatami mat in the next room over, alongside the still burning lamp. The flooring quickly began to catch fire, it would spread rapidly and turn the scene from a murder into a tragic accident; a clumsy child trips and falls, and in so doing sets the house ablaze. Chikage fled, unnoticed. She had gathered sufficient provisions to last her a few more weeks and set out once again to carry out her assigned task, but it would be a long time before the frightened eyes of that little girl allowed her to sleep soundly. |

Night was beginning to fall on the plain field Abunuj had been shooting at. His trainer always told him that training archery is never bad. But Abunuj wasn't out here for training, he was here to hopefully start some trouble. He was wearing a fur coat and had his horse armored, the entire point was to get noticed by bandits, he was thristy for something to kill, and wasn't going to kill and Innocent. What had made him so thirsty to get a kill out, he hadn't killed in... he couldn't even remember ? This sudden thirst was beginning to worry, him. But now wasn't the time to worry about something he had done for most of his life. In the trees of to the left he heard a very familiar noise, Light Calvary, no more than 5 horses. They were getting closer, but what were horses doing out this late, the Tokugawa training had ended hours before. Then, maybe 50 paces ahead, 4 horses apeard out of the forest, carrying short swords and staring at him. Abunuj reached into his quiver and pulled out 3 arrows, this his trainer had always told him to do. The four horses were seeming to try to get into wedge formation, which was stupid for such a small amount of men. It also would make it easy to land three arrows into them at once. He got his right hand into 3 finger hold and pulled the string back about 10 inches, he wouldn't need anymore than that. He heard a sudden wize of air next to him which made him flinch, letting go of the arrows. The ripping noise of flesh came soon after and then the sound of bones breaking and horses falling over. In an instant Abunuj moved his left hand behind his back and reached his right hand for his Katana, made by the finest Blacksmith in all of Japan. Another wize of air to the other side of him, but this time he knew it was coming, at least 3 archers were firing at him. With a quick whistle his horse charged for the men, and with Abunujnes left hadn free, he grabbed the horse and got into saddle. These archers weren't trained at all which would make for some easy kills and that they were. It toke Abunuj only 30 seconds to collect 3 heads which made him fell good inside, he hadn't lost his touch. But then to his suprise he heard marching, lots of marching. He ran up a small hill and clmbed one tree to find out where it was comig from. At least 2000 men were marching towards Tokugawa land, he hadn't realy ever seen those banners and couldn't identify, nore did he have enohg time as the were arrows coming his way, follow by chants "Spy!" He jumped off the tree, saddled his horse and made his way to the nearest castle town, there was a battle soon to come and he had to warn them! |

Aliete was in deep thought stairing deep into the heart of the fire that burned brightly in his fire place his dark green eyes had a small glint in them and by just looking at them you could tell he was pondering over somethink. His wife was quiet while prepearing dinner for him, she walked into the room and put down a small bowl of soup in front of him. "My dear you have been silent from since you came in from your training is everythink alright? I know that you are scared of beeing called into battle again but remeber your battalion was heaverly out numberd." She gave him a warming and comfortable smile before kissing him on the head, then their babby Kakali, their youngest boy, started stiring in his bed and proceeded to cry. Unfortuantley He shared his bed with his sister and older brother and so also woke the up. Mulike, the mother, stood and watched them as a tear came down her face, she new what her husband was thinking and she too was afraid of it. She began to shake and was losing control of her tears, a few seconds later she fell to her knees weeping, shaking horribly. But a soft gentle hand on her shoulder made her stop and stand up. She turned around and hugged Aliete. "Please dont hate me for thinking about it i honestly had felt like doing it i was so afraid, i have never had a day with them with out you being there to hold my hand, but when you go, as we both know you will, ill be strong and i wont think of giving our children away again." Mulikes eyes were soaked and she cept rubbing them every so often. Alitete looked into her eyes and said "When i married you yousaid you would be strong wiith or with out me and i know that you will not brake those promises because you are strong and its partly why i love you." He looked at her and gave her a warm but comforting smile. Edited by Lovetotalwar, 27/08/2011 - 11:09 am.

The sleepless autumn nights made Hino more tired than a horse after a long battle. Luckily, by the end of the day, the walls of South Shinano appeared on the horizon, greeting the traveller as he drew closer. The gates had the three hollyhock leaves inside a circle carved in them. The same emblem was portrayed on the small shields of the two gate guards. "Halt!" shouted one of them. He inspected Hino and then went through his things, the little he had on. The guardsman then nodded at him and let him pass. The city was full with busy people, despite the fact thet the sun was already leaning on the horizon. He had to dismount in order to pass through the mob. For two koku, he left his horse in the care of the stables adjacent to Springs Winds, a very popular local inn. For another five he had bought himself a rich dinner and a bed to sleep in. As he ate his dinner, he could not help but overhear the chat of the two men on the table next to his. "Realm divide, heh?" said the one on the left. He was fat, wearing clothes of many colours. His well treated hair fell down on his back like a waterfall. "It seemes that port blockading wasn't enough. My last month merchandise rotted while waiting to be transported, just because those damned Uesugi blocked the ports. And now this. It's a disaster, a disaster I tell you!" "Calm down friend. It is true that old allies and trade partners will turn enemies, but do not despair. I've heard rumours about outlanders reaching our shores. Shall we be the first ones to grab the exotic merchandise and establish a trade route with their homelands we might live to be the welthiest people in Nihon." the second one said. He had a soldiers body and posture, but his clothes were even cockier than his companions. Hino listened. Those were good and bad knews. The rumours about yhe outlanders had to have a truth at their roots, but also, the realm divide thing. He did not know it was taking place, and it was a problem. Soon, the roads will be more dangerous than before, as armies from different clans will pop up as mushrooms after the rain. "I'll think about this tomorrow, with a fresh head" Thought Hino as he headed to his room after finishing the meal. |

The marching was growing silenter and silenter, Abunuj was in luck then. He horses, Hamica, didn't seem to have broken a sweat yet. The arrows had stopped coming only 5 minutes ago and there seemed to be about 20 more miles between him and the next Tokugawa Castle Town, which was common Tax Collector knowledge. There was a small village on the outskirts of the forest that seemed to be quiet nice for rest, even though Hamica wasn't tired that doesn't mean Abunuj wasn't. When Abunuj arrived at the village many of the locals could't keep their eyes of him! Was it wired to see somebody carry weapons and look as wealthy as Abunuj, no to that because his weapons are more expensive then the village itself. Maybe they just aren't used to strangers in their village, not to many people travel this route anymore due to it's proximity to the Uesugi. Maybe they haven't gotten word that the Uesugi have only one province left until the Tokugawa have completely wiped them out. Abunuj put that thought behind him at hte sight of a Tavern, which seemed to be the best place to go right now to get his thoughts straight. He turned Hamica to the east and then west to the stables. Once he was done with that business he finally entered the Tavern. It seemed like the entire village was in the Tavern at once, well maybe all the villages drunks. Abunuj found a spot in the corner of the Tavern to just rest and think, it was dark aswell so the annoying drunks wont get in teh way. Abunuj overheard a heated conversation going down towards the end of the Tavern "There is no way that is true, aren't they already dead?" "Turns out they never were, I just saw them in the field early today, was out scouting like I always do" "Bout when do you think they will get here, when should we leave"At this Abunuj stood up, and so did a man at the far east of the Tavern, the conversation continued "No, it looked like they were going to rest for the night, you know, long day of marching gets to you. And tomorrow they will probably just pass us by, we haven't had a visitor since the Uesugi first took this provenience." Abunuj had a strange feeling, the one he had before the First Battle of Kai. He had a feeling that he was going to need a Katana. "I don't know man, there have been some shady people recently, maybe-" the man ended his sentence there and fell to the ground, Abunuj pulled out his Katana and scanned the room, the only other person that was up was that guy on the east side. Abunuj charged... Abunuj made the first swipe, at the man head.He ducked and pulled out a dagger, and swung it at Abunujs belly. The wound of metal colliding range through the room as Abunuj reflected that hit and grabbed at the man, just giving up on playing nice. The man, who Abunuj just realized was quiet short, swung his arm towards Abunujs face, it only barley missed. The sound of ripping flesh rung through the Tavern, but it couldn't have gotten any quieter than it already was, the short man wasn't the one who got hit though, neither was Abunuj, the other man in the conversation rang out in pain and then fell to the ground, an arrow in his back. Outside there was a huge crowd of men fighting innocent people, and there was no contest. Abunuj grabbed the short man by the neck a shoved his dagger into the short mans stomach. Abunuj let go of the mans neck and watched him fall to his death... but Abunuj had more to worry about now. |

"You hear about the the Daimyo's council? They say that they've finally filled all the positions." Kaiso smirked at Susuki, swallowing another bite from his rice ball. The two trainees had the day off from training and decided to have a picnic lunch. "They have. In fact, I've even heard that talks for the next campaign are already underway." Susuki pouted slightly. "How do you get this information so fast? You come from a fishing family and yet your ears outrace my father's traders!" Kaiso chuckled, scratching the back of his head. "I'd joke that I'm blessed to be able to speak with sea turtles, but... uh..." His friend winced a little. "Yeah, touchy issue. Be glad the metsuke isn't here." "Why do you think we're up on this hill?" Kaiso retorted. "The pretty view of the sea?" "That too. But privacy is nice. In any case, I take it you've heard nothing about the actual talks?" "No. Have you?" Kaiso shrugged. "Just a few rumours. I think they might consider making the Ikko-Ikki a vassal." He rolled his eyes. "I think that's a terrible idea." "Mmm? Why?" Susuki asked, his mouth full after taking another bite. "It's bad enough that the country is at war without having religious unrest thrown into the mix. Why do you think we keep refusing those Nanban? I'm sure the Daimyo would happily take the guns if they didn't cram their silly beliefs down our throats, just like the Ikko-Ikki did before them... and as they will again, if they really do become a vassal." Susuki frowned. "Why make them a vassal? Why not just add the territory to the Tokugawa?" "Something about drawing the heat away from us, realm divide and all. Nobody has liked the Ikko-Ikki besides the Ikko-Ikki themselves, so other clans are more likely to attack them instead of the Tokugawa. The trouble is, as I see it, is that a rival clan will get a foothold on our border, or worse, what if the Hattori try to claim them? An ally versus a vassal? Nothing good can come of it, I say." "True enough, I suppose." "I haven't heard much else, but I have been wondering about the army. Not our own garrison, but our main forces. The Daimyo, Tokugawa Mochimori, and... the other one." Susuki shrugged. "I can't remember his name either." "I don't want to," Kaiso frowned. "I may not resent the Tokugawa as a whole, but my brother still died fighting against that man." There was a brief, awkward pause before Kaiso lightened up again. "Oh, I've been meaning to ask. Mochimori... is it true his enemies still call him 'Ii', if only from their shrill cries of terror?" Susuki laughed. "I haven't heard that one." "In any case, don't we actually have four generals? The Daimyo's son, Tokugawa Ieyasu... think he will ever be on the frontlines?" "In due time, I suppose." Susuki shrugged. "Why do you ask?" Kaiso shrugged back. "I just thought there would be some poetic justice in Ieyasu crushing the factions he was held hostage by. Hey, pass over another rice ball." |

Abunuj ran out of the Tavern, this was no time to be a hero, who ever these people were they are strong and ruthless. The stables hadn't looked like they took any damage fro the attacks. Abunuj grabbed Hamica and whistled, Hamica must have the best ears because he started charging for a group of what looked like 20 Katana Samurai. Abunuj pulled out his Katana and swung with all his might, if he got the armor off of one he may be able to see the mon. And arrow came whizzing past Abunuj's head as made his way forward, he was more grateful for Hamica's patience than ever before. Fires were spreading through the village now and Anunuj noticed a small group of Ashigaru Swordsmen attacking the Samurai Abunuj had wounded, fire arrows began raining from the sky and Abunuj new if he wanted to protect the village he would have to distract them, he couldn't kill them all by himself. He smacked Hamica, telling her to run, and then pulled out his Katana for a second time to kill of some of the attacking stragglers. When he reached a position behind the archers he had counted at least 30 heads that he had amputated. He grabbed into his bag and felt a Metallica ball. When he finally found it his lit i sting on it with a wrist method and threw it. On contact with ground the ball would explode stunning many people around it and killing some. It did just that, 11 of the people who were in the group were never going to get back up and Abunuj couldn't count how many had fallen to the ground grabbing their eyes. Hamica seemed to have known what Abunuj wanted as she charged forward and started trampling many of the fallen men, and kicking those that were trying to get back up down. Abunuj swung at many of them with his Katana and hit them with great precision. Abunuj made a quick glance at the village and saw around 50 enemy men running for their life. But Abunuj couldn't focus on them right now, he had to make the most out of what luck he was having. None of them men that had tried to get back up so far had succeeded. Then out of nowhere something grabbed Abunuj by his back and slammed him to the ground. Abunuj struggled to get back to his feet, and in the process was punched in the stomach, causing the wind to get knocked out of him. The person grabbed him by the collar and pulled him up, Abunuj only got a quick look at his face before he was pushed backwards by the man. This was a mistake though as Abunuj used the momentum to get himself to his feet. The person now only had the advantage of not being in pain, besides that is was dead even. "I could have been a ruler, a Daimyo, if it weren't for you!" Abunuj had a revelation just at that moment, the men who were attacking were a famous rebel group, and he would have the head of the leader. He charged at this man with all his might, and at perfect timing dove towards him. He had the man on the ground and got ready to punch. But the man quickly and swiftly pushed off Abunuj and got to his feet, which was where Abunuj's Katana was. Abunuj made another quick charge and right before he normally dove for the man he dove at the ground, reached out for his Katana, and when he felt the cold of the metal in his hand!-! BAM! The man must have predicted this and kicked at Abunuj's face. His nose was surely broken. Abunuj got to his knee and looked up, the man was walking backwards with a face of fear on his face. The a familiar sound of hoofs came into Abunuj's hearing. Hamica had come to the rescue. That was only partially right. Hamica had come, but there was a rider, Abunuj's archer mentor. He had at least 3 arrows in his right hand and was already drawn back, Hamica was charging at the man. In the blink of an eye there were 3 arrows in the mans chest, and in one more blink Hamica was knocking him to the ground. Abunuj made a quick glance back at the village and heard man local cheers. They had beat the rebels!!! |

"You musn't leave brother! Mother needs your help caring to the farm, ever since dad died the workload has been to hard on me. And I refuse to listen to mother weep every night till you return again!" Cried the brother of Hageshii Raion. Hageshii gave him a reassuring smile and rapped his hands around his little brother. He held him as he wept, and cried, and screamed not to let Raion leave. "My brother. The world here is soft and gentle. It is a paradise of heavens, and a place where the gods could dwell. It is where water drifts softly, and snow comes hard. But my brother, out there is quite a different story! Out there a man finds himself entangled with his own duties, politics, war, disaster, and love. It is not a gentle place out there. Swords clash, clans battle, cities crumble, villages catch fire, and the dead infest the streets. So why in hell brother, would I go out there. Because to make here better, to improve your world there must be war, and death, etc. Out there there are more opportunities then anywhere else, and there is the chance to put your name in history. So brother cease your weeping. Instead weep for the dead, not the living." He was a soldier being called back to duty, is break was over. It was time to return to the real world. |

Aliete was wondering through the city centre when he saw some men walking home to home talking to families and when they left the family were crying. Aliete Followed them till they got to a small house which was next to the market place. He waited sitting on the pavement for a while waiting for them to move on and when they did he stood and walked to the house they had visited last. He gently knocked on the door and saw a sad and tearful women standing in the door way as she opened it. H looked at her and said “ I am sorry for disturbing you at this time.” The women looked at him and gave him a small smile. “Please may i ask who were those men?” She looked down and said “They told us that my husband was once again needed in the Tokugawa army!” Aliete turned round and said good bye to her then quickly ran home hoping to beat the men home, it was not worth thinking how upset Mulike would be with out him there to comfort her. He ran down a small ally way but then stopped when he noticed a women running from a rather large man. Aliete looked at the man, he was tall and strong and was holding a knife his short dark hair and black teeth mad him look menacing. “Hey leave that women alone!” A voice rang out but it was not Aliete’s voice he turned round and saw a man holding a pipe running towards the huge thug. Aliete watched as the beast of a man looked round just in time to catch the pipe that had been thrown at him. He then ran at the man and punched in the stomach and kicked the back of his leg making him fall to the ground. In his hast Aliete picked up a brick and throw it strait at the ugly thug, it hit him on the head and made him stumble back and drop his knife. The man on the floor picked up the knife and stabbed it right in his fat gut. Silence fell, as Aliete realised he had helped kill a man. He looked at the boddy, then at the girl who had come out from hiding behind a pile of wood and bricks and ran. As he ran he thought about going home and telling his wife but then thought no. He needed a drink, he was going to the Sake den. As he walked slowly to the Sake den he totaly forgot about the men who were going to tell Mulike that he was being called back into the army. |

As he saw the foreigner walk away accompained by two men, someone slipped behind Hino. He spouted something about treachery, something Hino didn't quite catch. His hopes of leaving were reduced to sand, and they dissapeared just like the sand slips through the fingers. However, Hino could not ignore the other man's combat ready position. "I have no wish to fight. You should know that spying other people's conversation is a bad habit." Hino casually started walking away. His head was starting to think out. The Uesugi clan may be crippled, but there must be people who are still alive. What was left, was to find them. |

Abunuj couldn't have been happier to see his mentor, with what just went down. His mentor reached for his hand and with respect Abunuj grabbed it. They went to his mentors camp, Tahimjo, where they would spend the night and see what they could do about Abunuj 's nose. When they arrived at camp Abunuj was surprised by how many people that were there, he counted 5. Many were shooting arrows or being cared for with wounds on their legs. "They helped the villagers fight those damn rebels. One of my men saw them coming yesterday and thought we might as well help. We also saw you which wasn't much of a surprise, your wife said that you had gone out shooting for the weekend and wanted me to check on you." Abunuj was shocked that he had come to check on him, and that they were probably the reason those villagers are still alive, a couple of very well trained bow men can do the trick. "Why don't we sit down and have some Sake, very thirsty after that fight." They did so and had a long talk about how those rebels have always been stubburn, and how they should just listen to their rulers, even if the Tokugawa were at war with them. The Tahimijo informed Abunuj of badd news. "Rumors are that the rebels are coming with a second army, only around 400 men who were going to back up for any of the men who died in whatever province they were heading for, well, they don't have anyone to reinforce now, but will see the smoke from the village from miles away, we are gathering villagers as we speak to get ready for another fight soon enough." This news hit Abunuj surprisingly hard, they had had trouble with a group of around 400 once, with less men to fight now they will have more trouble. Abunuj noded and said "I'll help" |

As Yusei had spent most of the months reading reports of the Tokugawa's actions he looked on with a pleased smirk. Everything had gone according to plan, well mostly everything, and he had succeeded and had not failed the Daimyo. To celebrate he took a brisk walk to a local sake den before he must return to his duties at the Daimyo's hall. As he continued walking, he could feel a strange prescence around him. Was it a demon? Or was it an insect, maliciously stalking its miniature prey in the high grass of Mikawa. It took some time for Yusei to turn anxiously to meet this shadowy prescence. But alas, there was nothing. To make himself feel secure, Yusei began talking to himself,"I am just being paranoid, this whole Kensei thing must be getting to my head. It is not like anyone in secure Tokugawa lands could be out searching for my head. A drink of sake will surely ease my nervous and worried thoughts." Still, as he continued his trek, Nagao Yusei felt like he was being watched. As the term curiosity killed the cat is used, Yusei turned around swiftly drawing his katana and shouting,"COME OUT, FOUL DEMON!" The shadows just whispered their usual tune to Yusei, but before he could turn around, he could hear the wind being sliced in the air as if it were water. A Katana came striking down upon Yusei. His assaulter was still unknown, the shadows had done well to cover his body. It seemed as if an actual demon was after Yusei. The only thing you can see is a specially crafted Katana being whipped in the air as if it was a brush. This was not Yusei! Whoever, his opponenet was, he was able to be on par with Yusei's strikes. The cycle of slicing and parrying continued into the cold, dark night as if it were nothing. Over time, Yusei was able to analyze his opponents patterns of attack, but it seemed whenever he adjusted his attacks, his opponent did as well. The battle would be comparable to a shadow cooly mimicking its caster like a parrot mimicks its owner. Once, however, Yusei landed a clean slice to this figure right in the side. The figure collapsed on one knee, but continued to fight. As Yusei moved in to finish his assailant, a small blade cut through the air and sliced right into Yusei's side as well. He still was able to shake this off, thanks to adrenaline, but it didn't last long enough. In mere seconds, Yusei was hacking blood on the ground as well! His opponent, who still has not revealed himself, stood up and kicked Yusei down to the ground. Then brought down his fist on Yusei's chest, taking the rest of the air out of him. This assailant now began to light a match to reveal his face. As the constricted Yusei looked in terror, he found a former Uesugi family member. He was a Nagao, the son of Kenshin's replacement! He had a wild look in his face, as if possessed by four demons. His clothes were ripped and torn, bruises and wrinkles covered his skin. How he was this formidable, in his current state is unknown. It could be the demons strengthening this man, but destroying his body in the process. He yelled into Yusei's face,"YOU DON'T REMEMBER ME DO YOU!!!!" The man spat in Yusei's face, tightening his grip. "YOU BETRAYED US! WHEN THE UESUGI WERE DYING, THE NAGAO WERE DYING, YOU JOINED THE TOKUGAWA. WE ARE BLOOD, YOU AND I. WE CAN TRACE OUR ANCESTRY BACK TO THE SAME MAN! NOW COMPARE OUR POSITION. YOU LIVE THE LIFE OF LUXURY AND STATURE, WHILE I WALLOW IN MUD AND CLAW MY WAY TO EAT BARELY ENOUGH TO SURVIVE! YOU PIECE OF TRASH!" The man's face was red with rage as he kneed Yusei in the stomach, once again making him lose breath. "BUT LOOK AT YOU NOW! YOU COULD JUST BE KILLED INSTANTLY RIGHT NOW, BUT I WON'T, BECAUSE YOU WOULD GLADLY ACCEPT DEATH. NO!!! I WILL MAKE YOU STAY HERE ON THE COOL GROUND BLEEDING AND SUFFERING UNTIL BISHAMONTEN TAKES YOUR DEAD WARRIOR SOUL UP!" Whilst this man was screaming loud enough to wake up the entirity of Mikawa, Yusei was slowly reaching for his katana that lay near him, when the crazed man kicked him down. By the time this Nagao finished his rant, Yusei had a firm grip on the katana with his constricted right hand, drenched with his own blood. He took the katana and used his weight to turn at such momentum for the katana to come up and slice the man's chest. In the middle of beginning another rant, the man felt the weight of the katana slice and drag into his chest. It was enought to make a man die instantly, but the inaccuracy of his turn just barely made the katana miss his heart. He yelled in pain and fell back. Yusei came over the man ready to end his life by thrusting the sword into his exposed heart. He cried out,"WHAT IS IT YOU TRULY WANT, 'YUSEI', ARE YOU REALLY HERE TO HELP THE TOKUGAWA OR IS IT YOU WANT TO OVERTHROW THE TOKUGAWA AND REBUILD THE NAGAO CLAN TO GREATNESS!" "Never!" Yusei yelled back in confidence. "I am here to ensure Hirotada-Sama is protected and ensured the Shogun's seat." The man yelled back, somehow not dead,"YOU TELL YOURSELF THAT DON'T YOU! YOU THINK IT IS FOR A NOBLE CAUSE, BUT IT ISN'T. THE DARKNESS IN YOUR HEART SAYS OTHERWISE, YOU WANT THE NAGAO RESTORED, AND I KNOW IT." As Yusei went in for the finishing blow, the man grabbed his small blade and thrust it into Yusei's left eye as Yusei stabbed his katana into the man's heart instantly killing him. He yelled in a great magnitude and fell back down leaving this world, as Yusei ripped the blade out of his eye in great pain and suffering. As he fell into the dew filled grass of the early morning, blood still flooded the ground around him. Yusei lived, but he would never be the same again. He never did get to celebrate the good news of the Uesugi's extermination did he? (This is not the end of Yusei and I promise he will be back soon but looking a bit different. Don't worry no real changes right now. Just wanted to do a bit of character development before the interrogation and Daimyo's Hall again.) |

Echigo province at last; several months has passed since Chikage had set out but after the arduous trek across the country she had at last reached her destination, the gravity of the task ahead of her weighing heavily upon her as she passed the countryside by. The autumn leaves looked especially beautiful as they whipped and twirled their intricate dance, choreographed by the gentle breeze; she could not help but stand and stare for a brief moment, taking in the tranquil world around her, something she had been given little opportunity to do growing up. She entered the major settlement inconspicuously, dressed the part of a simple peasant. Nobody would question her presence amongst the bustling masses, allowing her to get to where she needed to be unhindered. The layout of the area was confusing, but she’d been provided with maps and sufficient instructions beforehand, so she knew exactly where to go. It took only a brief few minutes before she reached her target; making sure she was unseen she slipped into a back alleyway and began to search the residence for windows. With a skill and swiftness that can only come from years of experience she silently pried open an unwatched window and hoisted herself through, her delicate footfalls making little sound to indicate her presence. She looked around briefly, and was shocked to hear a voice screech behind her. “You, hmm? I’d prefer you enter my home through the door like a normal person; though I suppose expecting common courtesy from a whelp like you is like trying to squeeze blood from a stone.” The man before her was known to her only as ‘Mole’, her contact in Echigo province and allegedly one of the best information-gathers utilised by the family she served. Personally she couldn’t stand the man, he stood a head shorter than her, glaring at her with his beady little eyes; his hair was perpetually slick and oily, but her had a well-kept appearance, only the finest of clothes were good enough for him as he wormed his way into the upper echelons of Tokugawa society in order to be the eyes and ears of her masters, something he was extremely well compensated for. She had worked with him several times previously, and he was unquestionably good at his job, but he had taken an instant dislike to her whilst she was a still fledgling ninja, and the feeling was mutual; the way he held himself gave off cloying waves of pretence and self-satisfaction. “I am here to fulfil my duty as I was instructed, and nothing more; spare me your whining and tell me how best to separate Tokugawa Hirotada’s head from his body.” She cared little for his petty insults, wanting only to leave his company as quickly as possible and return home. “Yes well I am afraid it’s not that simple, had you possessed a basic comprehension for politics I’m sure you’d know by now, but let me explain for your simple mind. As of the so-called ‘realm divide’ the Tokugawa have seemed to be acting in desperation, recruiting large numbers of troops, lashing out at their nearby enemies and even sparing the lives of the heathen Ikko Ikki, hoping to generate some degree of support as they no doubt intend to push for the Shogunate in future.” “What does that have to do with us?” she snapped. “Patience, whelp. In his desperation, Tokugawa Hirotada has been sending gifts of significant sums of money to our daimyo every season, with no sign of stopping. Clearly he foolishly thinks he can buy Hattori loyalty. There is also the matter of the recent wars that our people has found themselves caught up in as a result of allying ourselves with the overambitious Tokugawa, until our own position is secure their support in those wars will be invaluable to us. You would not wish to shame the family by prematurely inviting disaster unto our clan now would you? If the head of the household has to explain to the daimyo why his payments have stopped coming in and why we have lost our strongest ally all at the worst possible time... well that would reflect poorly on you, now wouldn’t it?” “So I was sent here for nothing? What is this, I’ve spent months wandering the wilds and scrounging any scraps of food I could get a hold of and it has all been for naught?” Oftentimes she found it vital to remain calm, and keep her composure at the worst of times; when the failure of a mission was on the line, or an outburst of emotion would result in severe punishment from her masters she kept it inside; but she offered no such luxury to Mole, visibly bubbling with anger towards him. Mole stepped back, his demeanour somewhat shaken by Chikage’s sudden display of rage. “Calm down, calm down.” He urged her to sit. “Your presence will not be wasted here; you will just have to be patient. The daimyo has already shown his contempt towards the Tokugawa by sending troops into their lands without excuse, it is only a matter of time before he decides that our clan should break this wavering alliance and sends forces against the Tokugawa; if, at that pivotal moment, the family could provide him Tokugawa Hirotada’s head on a platter they would no doubt earn his favour, and you could return home, no doubt to a sizable reward for the part you played. Tomorrow you and I will travel to Fukushima, where Tokugawa and his troops are currently stationed. When I tell you the time is right, then you will strike.” Chikage hesitated for a moment, contemplating what he had told her. “Very well; if that is the best course of action I shall not object.” She grudgingly accepted what he had planned, though ultimately she had no real choice in the matter; but the prospect of having to travel with that slime of a man did not thrill her, and the thought of having to wait many more arduous months in his company before she could make a move was unsettling. He smirked. “Good. Now until then get out of my sight. I will be attending guests this evening and neither your presence nor your stench is welcome here.” Resisting the urge to gut him, she fled into the city, alone, considering how best to occupy her time. Soon, she thought to herself; soon the daimyo of the Tokugawa would fall and she would have proven herself. |
