Medieval knight in disguies

Dakeu walked out of the Daimyo’s halls and looked at the letter that had been given to him, he stared at it hard. He then scrunched it up and throw it to the side.

“Big mistake old fall!” he said in quiet and cold voice. He walked down the small hall till he came to the entrance. Standing there looking out over Mikawa he saw a market place busy as ever and some merchants trying to sell their goods.

Dakeu walked through the town centre until he came across a small Sake den, which he proceeded to walk into. To his surprise he saw a familiar face sitting at a table holding his head in his hands. Dakeu walked over to the man and said in a light hearted way.

“Thought you gave up drinking brother.” The man (court of guard ) spun round and stared at the tall dark haired man.

“Brother....you stopped calling me that a long time ago.” said Aliete. Looking his brother up and down. Dakeu smiled and said “yes, well i used to be just a bit paranoid back then.”
“What you doing back in Mikawa?”
“What you doing looking so glum?”
“I asked you first.” Said Aliete not in the mood to be playing childish games.
“That you did....Well you see I'm looking for a place to stay.”
“Well you can have a permanent place at mine.” Said Aliete. “You see I'm going to be called into the army and i don't want to leave Mulike like this.” Aliete got up and said “could you buy us a another round?”

2 hours later Dakeu had his arm round Aliete walking him home after he had had 1 to many drinks of Sake. As they neared the home Dakeu was thinking about that Uesugi descendant who was being interrogated, maybe he could help Dakeu with his new plan.

Abunuj had been practicing his shot all day. News had arrived that he was the Developer of Mikawa and he had to keep his mind of that so they could prepair for the group of rebels marching their way. Tahimjo had made him the best shot in the village, who were known for their bowman. Tahimjo had also brought his two best friends who were training the villagers at swords and horse-riding. They were becoming a small army. Around 40 bowman who were shooting constantly, and getting very very good. Around 20 of them could hit a 10 foot wide target( about 3 meters) from 300 yards away (300 meters). The swordsmen had been dueling forever and where getting very good, but the cavalry were still needing a bit more training.

Abunuj went scoutiing for the army at 2, and to his surprise he didnt really need to. They were just around the mountain and had arround 300 men. 150 more that the villagers. he ran back to the village to tell them to get ready.

"Wakey wakey," Susuki chuckled, lightly knocking his bow against the rim of Kaiso's helmet.

Kaiso snapped back to reality. "Huh? What?"

"Oh, don't give me that. I heard you singing under your breath. Maguro tabetai, maguro tabetai, pichipichi osakana tabetai. Are you hungry or something?"

Kaiso blushed a little. "Oh no no no. That's something my little brother came up with; he occasionally sings it when he's working, fisher family and all. I visited my family the other day and, well, he got it stuck in my head."

"I'm a little surprised I haven't heard it before, then."

"Well," Kaiso's blush deepened, "I haven't been going home on my time off very much."

Susuki's eyebrow raised. "Oh?"

The ashigaru cleared his throat. "Let's just say I've found a nice collection of hot springs in the mountains and leave it at that."

"What's her name?"

"If I promise to show you where they are, will you drop it?" Kaiso frowned.

Susuki smirked. "Very well. For now, at least."

"Hey, Susuki? Is it just me, or has not much changed over the past year? I thought the province would be undergoing more change after the initial occupation."

His friend shrugged. "Rumour has it that there has been some communication issues across all Tokugawa lands. There have been lots of plans made, but few to no build orders have actually gone out. That's probably why our roads haven't been upgraded to Tokugawa standards yet."

"Makes sense." Kaiso paused for a moment and sighed. "Don't know about your folks, but mine are getting really worried about the realm divide. I keep reassuring them that we're safe and out of the way, that I'm not going with the main army and whatnot, but..." he sighed again.

Susuki frowned. "I have it easier. They travel the realm plenty and are used to the danger. Your parents haven't gone anywhere but out to sea, and have already lost one son to these turbulent times."

"I just wish they'd realize that I'm not my brother. Mochikata will not be my downfall," Kaiso growled with a creased brow.

"You remembered his name? I thought you said you didn't want to-"

Kaiso took a deep breath. "I know the metsuke isn't here anymore, but I still feel the weight of loyalty. As much as I say that I hold the Tokugawa no animosity, I can't fully believe it if I hold a grudge against one of their generals... our generals. At the barest minimum, I can't react to his name with hostility."

Susuki nodded but said nothing, choosing to leave things be as they continued their patrol along the walls. At least, until he remembered the earlier topic. "Don't forget about those hotsprings now."

Kaiso just have him an incredulous look as his friend laughed.

Hino layed on the ground. There wa no light in the cell, ever, so he had to count the days by the meals. Hino knew that the convicted had only one meal a day, so by his accounts, this was the tenth day.

Having the eyes oppened ou closed made no difference, and the silence was so opressing that it may make a man go mad. The man who broght him the meal was a welcome sight, not did he only break the silence, but he also illuminated the room. But Hino was never able to take a good look at it, his eyes never had time enough to adjust to the torch's light.

In the silence he could hear them, scared and crying...

"How can you run somebody just a little through?" Fujiko asked in exasperation.

"I don't know," Genji, one of her 12 ronin, grumbled, "maybe slice down from the eyebrow and stop just before the blade reaches the heart?"

"We could also cut off a limb," Yuuji supplied helpfully, "that ought not to kill the man outright, ... if treated swiftly."

Fujiko turned around and stared her two companions down. "For the last time. You are not gonna go and kill, mutilate or otherwise assault the Tatami Master. He might be a stubborn nitpicker, but he's still an officer." As she saw the crestfallen expression on the two ronin's faces, Fujiko rolled her eyes skyward and thought Men!

Eventually the threesome reached the wooden door to Neneme's room, the daimyo's eldest daughter. The guards recognized the Head Priestess and acknowledged her presence with a nod. Fujiko tapped lightly at the door. "Neneme-himesama! This is Izayoi Fujiko. Might I come in?"

"Go away!" a young girl's voice sounded shrill from the other side of the sliding door which was solid wood, not just framed paper. Fujiko tried the handle, but it was locked from the inside.

"She's not letting anyone in," the guard informed her. "Not even the daimyo's wife could persuade her to come out."

After her little shouting match with the Tatami Master Fujiko had precious little patience for the antics of an adolescent girl. Subsequently she turned to Genji and said in a tone loud enough to be heard in the room: "Genji, break the door down."

"You wouldn't dare!" the 13-year-old girl on the other side shrieked.

"Try me," Fujiko challenged. There was a moment of silence, then the rustling of some clothes and finally the click of a hatch being removed from the door. Fujiko entered and sat down on the tatami floor. Neneme was a beutiful young lady, even at her young age. Her hair was pinned up above her head with two long, slender gold needles and she wore a skyblue kimono of the finest fabric. The flying form of the mythical bird phoenix was stitched into it in a fine display of Tokugawa craftmanship. The only thing that marred her beauty was a rebellious frown on her face.

"I'm not gonna marry some old Hattori jackass just because you want me to," she said matter-of-factly.

"I'm afraid that is not for you to decide," Fujiko replied calmly. "Your father needs this alliance to last a while longer. You know how important this is."

"It's not fair. At least Ieyasu had the prospect of returning home. I'm gonna be locked away in castle Iga for the rest of my life. That's if they even let me live after the war breaks out." Tears were forming in the young girl's eyes.

"Do you believe I have not taken precautions, princess?" Fujiko asked mysteriously. She motioned for Genji and Yuuji to enter as well and close the door behind them. They sat down to either side of their mistress and Yuuji handed her a cloth wrapped bundle he was carrying.

"If you think a purifying ritual will make things better, you are sadly mistaken, miko," Neneme stated bitterly.

Fujiko gave her smile. "We'll come to that. But later. First I have a gift for you." She carefully unwrapped the box and placed it in front of Neneme.

The girl looked mystified. The battle of emotions could clearly be seen on her young face. Finally curiosity won out over petulance and she gingerly picked up the gift. "It's a miko robe," she said in puzzlement.

Fujiko nodded. Looking around for prying ears, she began in a low voice that wouldn't carry over to the guards. "What I'm going to tell you now, stays between the four of us. Not even your father must know. Once you enter the Hattori clan, trust nobody. Not even your husband. Genji and Yuuji will escort you as your personal guards. They have sworn to give their life for me. Now I am ordering them to protect you with their life." Fujiko paused for a moment. The two ronin put their foreheads to the ground in reverence to the ward they had just received. "Once war with the Hattori becomes inevitable, they'll know what to do. They'll know which signs to look for and they'll help you flee the castle and get you out of Iga safely. Use this robe as a means to disguise yourself and make your way back home. Do you understand what I've just told you, child?"

Neneme nodded slowly. "Why can't we tell father?"

"Because it might interfere with his dealings with the Hattori," Fujiko explained. "Your father is an honest man, perhaps too honest for the game of diplomacy. I don't think he would let anything slip on purpose, but it is better to be on the safe side. The subconscious is a powerful thing. The less people know, the better. I give you my word, Neneme-himesama. You're not gonna throw your life away in Iga. Genji and Yuuji will bring you home safely, just as your brother has returned home safely before."

A moment of silence crossed the room and Fujiko realized that Neneme had understood the instructions in full. Feeling no need to elaborate any further, she stood up and went to the door.

"Fujiko-san," Neneme called after her, "thank you."

The Head Priestess looked back over her shoulder with a smile. "I know what it's like to have your marriage arranged for you. I also know what it's like to lose your entire family. And I'll be damned, if I let either of those things ruin your life for you. I'll see you at the temple before you leave, himesama." With those words Fujiko left, leaving Neneme to get acquainted with her two new bodyguards Genji and Yuuji.

Yuki woke after a long sleep. He wondered where he was, then remembered that the Daimyo had given him hospitality. Yuki grabbed his robes and stick, and left his room. He entered the castle's courtyard, approached a very serious messenger and told him "Tell the Daimyo that I thank him for his hospitality, and that I must leave for Totomi to tend to my fields. My nephew, he is trustworthy, but very clumsy." And with that, Yuki walked off towards the stables, grabbed his horse and left for home.

Abunuj made good time back to the village to warn the villagers to get their armor ready. The women and those who were not fighting had been making arrows, quivers and spears all day, but now that the army was coming they had to quickly help the warriors get their armor, or Abunuj would say thin tin, ready for the fight.

The army was just rounding the mountain to the North when everybody was ready. They got into formations all around the village, which hadn't been repaired from the last fight. The horsemen were going around in the woods to get a flank on their men, or maybe even scout from the rear. They had been trained to give off different signals for the different men there were.

The archers were on the roofs of the broken village buildings, which could still hold them, but if they needed to get down could easily have 300 more pounds of metal added. They planned to fire a volley, and then right when done duck flat onto the buildings roof so it would confuse the enemy archers. The people who had made the arrows worked well and fast, of course after getting the hang of how to make them. They had made an estimated 35 for each man, and with accurate volleys that could severely damage the enemies numbers. And the sword and spear men where behind all of the buildings with shields in case of a stray arrow going a bit to far. They were to charge at the enemies after they got within 100 yards, and hopefully not lose to many men to missile fire.

Some of the leftover villagers also had dug a 60 by 30 feet hole somewhere they thought the enemy soldiers and theirs would meet. The enemy's would have more trouble due to them being on the shorter ground an that the villagers were going to charge down a hill at them. The just hoped that the leftover men would close in on them.

The army was now in range as the first volley of arrows went into the sky, as instructed by Tahimjo, who would lead the archers in this battle. They seemed to be deadly accurate as usual and got at least 20 men down in one volley, the enemy was already down to 280. Of course the rebels weren't going to just sit there and watch as the got pampered with arrows. They sent their own volley at where they thought the archers were firing from, not sure due to the ducking strategy. When the archers had reloaded they jumped back up and fired a second volley, realizing that the rebels had no idea where they were. This volley seemed to be more deadly as it hit the charging swordsmen and many fell to their feet, at least 25% of their 120 men unit. Which was 39 if their men. The archers just rinsed and repeated from there.

The Horsemen were behind the rebels now and were waiting for a command now. The rebels did seem to have a general and bodyguard which could be useful to kill, hopefully incognito to the other men over the yelling of pain and constant noise of either firing a volley or receiving one. The Horsemen leader held up a signal that meant not to fire at the unit they attacked then yelled at his men to charge. The sound of the charge must not have been heard by any of the rebels for the 10 seconds it lasted before the horses and horses collided, sending man of the bodyguard flying. The melee fight didn't go so much in favor of the villagers as the ended up losing 75% of their men and barely winning, and getting their leader injured. The ran of back into the forest to wait to see what had unveiled.

The swordsmen had been given the word to charge towards the ditch. They saw the archers moving from the building to get behind the enemy's to fire at them. Only and hour before the battle horses arrived for them to ride in case of this here situation, they were being wasted and needed to get behind the enemy lines. The horsemen had returned and lent the horses that the archers were short of, only needing to borrow 8. The used the forest like the others did to get behind the enemy lines. The swordsmen continued on their charge and had reached the ditch at the same time the rebels did, and because of the rebels having lost so many men to the missile fire they would be cake for the swordsmen to kill off. The fight at the ditch didn't last long before they heard the retreat horn from the enemy's . Everybody looked up for a quick moment to see that the rebel archers had been flanked and completely obliterated. The swordsmen the continued to kill the rebels and soon there were little left of them

Abunuj suspected that there were about 10 rebels left, but those rebels needed to be killed so they couldn't bring word that they and the other army had lost, instead giving whoever the rebel leader was a false impression that them had taken the Provence to the South of the village, which of course would be wrong. Abunuj drew one arrow at a time and with 2 years of demanding archery training toke all of the routers out, surprisingly with 9 arrows.

The battle had been won by the villagers due to tactics, not of training or outnumbering but tactics. Abunuj thought this to be a good lesson to any general who looks at a battle and says "We are screwed" and Abunuj knew that when he had grand children, he would be the one who would tell them the stories about how he helped fight a rebel army and save a village... twice.

"Susuki, I need your help."

Susuki turned to face his friend. Kaiso was looking pretty ragged, albeit more mentally than physically. "What do you need?"

Kaiso sighed. "My mother overheard some women in the market babbling on about Mochimori-dono's marriage to Ii Akie. Of course, we all know he was an Ii himself before being adopted, and now my mom won't shut up about it being scandalous! You have your ear to the ground, merchant family and all. Just how far is their blood relation?"

"This why you don't normally go home when you have time off?" Susuki pried. "Besides Okuni, I mean."

The ashigaru's eyes widened. "H-How...?"

"Process of elimination. You're the only Kaiso hereabouts, so I just needed to find out which young women knew about you. After eliminating my sister, who we know doesn't like you..."

"Don't remind me," Kaiso grumbled, protectively covering his right hand.

"...and the few girls who clearly identified you as an old friend, I only had Okuni left. She's... definitely for you."

Kaiso's eyebrow raised. "Meaning what exactly?"

"Just that it's a good match I won't interfere with, that's all. Anyhow, the original question. Second cousins, so distant enough."

"Thanks, Susuki. That should help."

Susuki nodded. "Anytime."

Kaiso nodded back, but an uncomfortable frown crossed his face. "Personally, I'm more concerned about Neneme-himesama."

"You worried about her safety, what with the inevitable war with the Hattori?"

He shook his head. "No. I'm worried that it isn't inevitable. The Hattori has been losing ground to their enemies. Granted, pressure has been alleviated somewhat by the surprisingly bravado Ikko Ikki, but what if the Hattori get overwhelmed? Neneme-himesama should be able to escape easily if the Tokugawa declared war on them, but what if another clan crushes them first? Will she get out in time?"

Susuki relaxed slightly. "It'll be fine. From what I've heard of her, she'd chew her way through a mountain to get home safely. Besides, why are you so worried?"

"Partly general concern, partly self-preservation from Mother's endless fretting over the matter herself."

Susuki laughed. "I hear you."

Abunuj spent the next few days cleaning up the dead bodies of the battlefield. He estimated only a few of the villagers were actually lost, due to the strategy they used. Tahimjos friend had taken an arrow to the leg and had to sit out in helping out, he was in just to much pain. Sadly many horsemen had died, but the night after the battle their horses returned to the battlefield and seemed to morn their death. Abunuj and Tahimjo, along with Tahimjos friends went to the nearest provence that night, they just couldn't stand being near the smell of the dead bodies.

The Sake Den was packed that night, so they choose to see what the comotion was.

"I hear the Yamana are inside the Ikko Ikki land, those dirty F******"

"I lost my son to them a long time ago, we better grab that army by the horns and ripe them off!"

Abunuj and friends took a table not to far from the commotion, but still far enough to not be involved.

"News is that they are scared to fight, that they are only there to raid. If so they are cowards, if you are to raid are stuff you better stand and fight!"

"They aren't cowards, we-they need provisions for the winter, and that is the only place near where they wont have to spend at all to get them."

Abunuj and friends haadn't even order food before they left the Sake Den, they knew that if there were to be a fight that they would end up being involved, not worth it. The just strode of the the inn and asked for a few rooms.

“What do you mean ‘out of the question’, Mole? I have been waiting here for the better part of a year now without action, and now you are trying to tell me that it has all been for nothing?” It had been a long year for Chikage, time she had spent bored out of her mind, stealing scraps of food and having to deal with the insufferable company of the wretched man before her, and she was not happy to receive the news that her long-awaited hunt for Tokugawa Hirotada’s head was never going to come.

“Know your place woman, it is not yours to question the will of the fam-“

She punched him hard in the face and he crumpled to the ground, looking up at her in shock, cradling his cheek.

“Enough is enough. I have long suffered your flapping tongue, Mole. You are going to explain to me exactly why I am being forbidden from taking action against their leader, and you are going to do so politely and with courtesy.” She had never acted out like that before in her life, but without the watchful eyes of her masters and the constant enforcement of rules and punishments to keep her on a leash she felt more free to ‘voice’ her opinions.

“F-fine...” he stammered, aware for perhaps the first time that he was talking to a trained killer with a short temper, whose obedience he could no longer count on. “Tokugawa offered his daughter’s hand in marriage to our clan, a proposition that our daimyo accepted, despite his taking offense at the lack of tribute payments. He seemed thrilled by the decision, and so the family has ordered you to stop your activities until such a time as the daimyo’s ire at the Tokugawa inevitably grows strong once again.”

“So they expect me to wait forever? Surely they realise that this is a shred scheme on Tokugawa’s part to gain their affections?”

“You and I know, but we are close to the heart of Tokugawa leadership, and I have ears everywhere. Our family too have been informed, but the daimyo is unlikely to listen to such dissention, not given his current state of newfound affection for the Tokugawa. The tables have turned and it is our clan again who is being used.” Mole’s trembling voice belied his usually calm demeanour, it was easy to see that he too was outraged at the situation. Chikage held out her hand and helped him to his feet.

“We cannot simply sit here and wait whilst the Tokugawa take our people for granted. I cannot betray the family, but surely there is something I can do to undermine their leader without killing him?”

A wicked grin spread across Mole’s face. “Perhaps there is, if you are so keen to taste blood again. Tokugawa’s recent success comes from the officers he has appointed to help run his bloated kingdom, perhaps without them his luck would run dry.”

Chikage stopped pacing up and down frantically and became intrigued. It had been a long time since she had been given the opportunity to prove herself to her masters, and she would jump at any chance she could grasp. “Tell me of these officers, that I may relinquish them of their heads.”

Mole fumbled about in his cabinets, rifling through his amassed collection of scrolls of information, each one containing priceless information illegitimately gained about the Tokugawa, until he found the ones he was looking for, carefully unfurling them and presenting them before her.

“First there is the High Priestess, Izayoi Fujiko. She is the spiritual leader of the Tokugawa people and displays an unparalleled ability to rally them together and unify their voices . Without her the morale of the peasants would plummet. She would be an opportune target were it not for the warriors that accompany her.”

Chikage interjected “I fear no woman who needs men to guard her, she must be weak indeed.” She had never understood why others chose to surround themselves with people trained in the arts of war, but then she had never had the privilege of living as anything other than a killer and a servant. It mattered little to her, many high profile targets had guards, and they were ill suited to stop ninja.

“Yes, yes, now let me continue.” He pointed towards the second scroll. “Takesun Motohisa, Tatami Master; his charge is the treasury and ordering construction in Tokugawa lands. It would appear that Tokugawa has taken offense to him as of late, but he still remains a critical concern.”

“The third is Nagao Yusei, the sword master, responsible for the majority of the standing army of the Tokugawa. The loss of him would be a serious blow to their troops, especially during this realm divide, and their ongoing war with the Date.”

“The last is Hattori Mokudo, once from our clan, his current work threatens to undermine the Hattori through espionage and trickery.”

“If these Tokugawa honestly believe that they can beat the Hattori at their own game then they are more foolish than I had thought.” She chuckled to herself.

“Indeed, but as of yet their agents have been unthreatening to us, his status as a target is merely due to our not wanting to take any chances in the future. Either way, his presence amongst the other officers has been minimal, so he is not a priority.”

Chikage pondered for a moment. Being sent out to chase down four secondary targets was not an idea she found appealing, but it seemed to her as if she had very little choice. “Very well; if this is what I must do to prove myself to the family then so be it, but should the daimyo chance his mind and turn on the Tokugawa then my goal is clear. I shall go now, and I require to be kept up to date on their movements.”

Mole sat with his arms crossed as he watched the assassin leave the room. Frankly he was just happy to have her out of his house, at least for the moment; it wasn’t easy pandering to the upper echelons of Tokugawa society, and any more bruises certainly wouldn’t help matters.

Yusei walked into the local Sake Den in the nearby village just outside Mikawa. He wanted to visit the Sake Den, but last year's encounter didn't end well. He lightly stroked his eye bandages before entering. As he walked in, all eyes swept their dark gaze towards him.

One would-be thief shouted out,"Hey guys look who just came in here! The one-eyed Samurai Sword Master Yusei. Bahahaha!"

His outburst had caught the attention of the rest of the bar, immediately, the other would-be thieves and citizens laughed along with him. Yusei could tell this man was drunk and having been so hazed lost sight of who he was mocking. To mock a samurai means death, and so death would be this man's face.

Yusei took out his Katana at the man, his jaw dropping as he attempted to dodge Yusei's sword. With one simple slash, the man had been sliced in the chest dropping him in an instant. The regular citizens went silent, but a few Ronin stepped up from their seats.

"Hey, this guy is the Kensei Sword Master right? One of the Daimyo's officers?"

Another Ronin, with a stutter answered,"Y-yes, h-he can make a g-great fortune i-if we s-sell him to the H-Hattori!"

The other Ronin joined in,"Yea, bag him up and ship right away, the Hattori will let us serve and we can make riches."

The Ronin, along with other criminals, charged at Yusei. He had his sword still drawn and was ready to take on these poor swordsmen.

Joining into the action he yelled,"Just try it, criminal scum."

As he yelled this a man in the far corner drew his sword and charged at the Ronin as well. The fighting began as Yusei killed two criminals with a nice side slice. The first Ronin collapsed his sword onto Yusei's head, just barely parryed by Yusei's Katana. Meanwhile, the mysterious man had faced one of the other Ronin. Both Ronin were strong and heavy compared to the average Yusei and mysterious stranger.

Taking a nice stab to the leg, Yusei was able to ruin the man's balance. Another strong strike to the neck severed the man's head from his shoulders. The mysterious helper had taken a strike to the arm almost losing it. He then swept the man off the ground and dropped his sword into the man's heart as they both collapsed.

Yusei was alone in this, the other citizens had run like a small bird at the first sight of a human. Most of the criminals were dead, the rest running in fear for their lives. The last Ronin was left.

"You know, we were part of the Uesugi army. We remembered you as the military advisor for Kenshin. Yes, now I remember. You betrayed us, your fellow Samurai and condemned them to death. While our clan died you were living it up here. Much of a samurai huh?"

Yusei argued in a loud, harsh voice,"You fled after seeing any sight of losing. You are all hypocrites, the lot of you. When Kenshin died, so did my loyalty, I was more of Ronin than Samurai at that point. Hirotada-Sama, saw that in me. He knew my life was wasted dying for something I did not honor. I am bringing peace to the land. Through war we can bring peace! You seek to sell me away to the Hattori, maybe gaining a huge profit in the process, how honorable."

It seems the Ronin had enough, he hurled himself at Yusei charging straight at him. The next second Yusei was slammed against the wall with blood of the Ronin dripping from his blade. The man killed himself in the process of crushing Yusei's left arm into the wall. At least it was not his eye this time.

As he reviewed the damage and put his arm in a splint, Yusei walked over to the barman. "This place was housing fugitive Ronin and criminals. If you were smarter, you would keep tabs on your customers. I am closing this Sake Den immediately. Any objections will result in execution."

The man bowed and set out at once with his coworkers to repair the damage. Yusei then turned to the man slumped agains the wall holding his bloodied arm.

"You are very honorable and noble for such display, who are you, and why did you help me."

The man looked up at Yusei smirking,"I am a Metsuke working undercover in this Sake Den. I was keeping a tab on those Ronin, waiting for a good chance to take them and arrest them. When you drew their attention, I knew it was my chance to do my job. The arm is collateral damage, but the job is done. Now I must leave at once."

As the man walked out of the Sake Den, Yusei went over to an empty table, taking a sip of sake to ease the pain. Then walked out, speaking to himself,"What did that Ronin mean 'sell to the Hattori'!?"

Do our own allies seek to weaken us, or maybe they are using rumors to make us break our allegiance with the Hattori. I hope it's just a rumor, maybe I'm being paranoid. Bahhh, forget it.

With that Yusei returned home to rest.

Fujiko was just finishing up some business in the city, when she walked the winding stairs back up to the temple grounds. While the temple could be accessed from the castle, she preferred the less well known back entrance. Not many people used this narrow road and thus it was quiet, the dense brush and small trees to either side seemed to bring a sense of serenity and unity with nature.

The calmness didn't push politics completely out of Fujiko's mind, though. She had just witnessed the construction site for the new market in Mikawa being shut down by the Tatami Master's orders. She could only shake her head at such foolishness. The work gangs had spent the better part of a year on the project and now they wouldn't even get paid for the almost finished market place. She wondered why he had ordered the work done, only to cancel it now and replace it with something else. There was no pushing the blame on workers this time either. Time and effort had been wasted purely due to indecisiveness and the lack of a real goal in mind.

The Head Priestess shook her head again, the wind rustling through her long raven hair. No point in getting hung up on it, she decided. She only wished that there were a clearer vision in the Daimyo's Hall. Everybody agreed on making Hirotada-sama Shogun, but nobody seemed to have a long-term plan on how to do it. The Sword Master was quick enough to indulge the daimyo's selfish request for a new army, but didn't seem to have a plan as to how the Date campaign was supposed to pan out yet. The Shinobi Elder was quite another worry as well, openly threatening resignation if it came to war with the Hattori. It had always been clear to Fujiko that the alliance could not be held forever. It was only a temporary means to secure the southern border. Keep your friends close. Keep your enemies closer. That simple principle had guided her on the matter. But the Hattori could not be kept around forever, lest they would take Kyoto and make a bid for the Shogunate themselves. The cost of maintaining an alliance was now outweighing it's use and the Hattori had never been really trustworthy. Raiding trade routes and putting a strain on diplomatic relations. Open war was inevitable and only a matter of time.

Suddenly Fujiko was jerked out of her contemplation. "Who is there?" she shouted. She had felt eyes on her, watching from the shadows of the trees and bushes. There was the unmistakable weight of a malicious presence in the air. As the wind rustled the leaves, Fujiko's eyes darted around, trying to pinpoint any source of movement.

Finally her gaze came to rest not far from her current location, behind the low hanging branch of a tree that was hovering above a dense bush. A thousand horrible possibilities flickered through her mind. Should she run? No. An unprotected back would be an even more inviting target. Fujiko steeled herself and stood up straight, masking her fear with determination to stare the attacker down. "I know, you're there," she said, mustering up all her courage so her voice wouldn't crack. "You might as well come out!"

A moment of tense silence passed, the rustling leaves in the wind being the only source of sound. Fujiko's fingers grew cold and she began to shiver, but she kept her eyes steady on the spot where she thought the assassin was lurking. A glint caught her eye as the sharp point of steel was contrasted by the setting sun. It was a kunai.

"Fujiko-sama!" a voice called out to her from further up the stairs. She spun around to meet the newcomer. It was Hayate, one of her ronin. Then the bush stirred and the leaves rustled again. When Hayate had come down to her, she turned on him again. "Did you see anybody?" she asked tensly.

The samurai scratched his head. Obviously he hadn't even noticed the situation in it's entirety. "Uhmm, ... no, I haven't. I only heard your voice down here. Were you talking to somebody?"

Fujiko took one more glance at the bush. The presence was gone. Then she looked into the worried face of Hayate and made up her mind. There was no point in worrying him without having proof. "No, never mind. Walk with me the rest of the way, Hayate," she said, shaking her head. The ronin looked puzzled, but soon nodded and took the bags with the supplies for the temple from her.

As the two of them walked up the steps, Fujiko listened intently to the rustling leaves that was filled with the song and knowledge of Fujin the wind god. The kami was whispering the name of her attacker to her. "Chi...ka...ge?" she mumbled. "What a strange name for an assassin."

Yusei walked down the winding road into town, the same road of which he lost his eye and a piece of his sanity. He could see to the grass near one part of the road, some of the pieces of metal, and faint spots of blood on the ground. Most of it had dried up, but you could see signs of battle in the way the Earth formed around it.

Taking his time down this road of pain, Yusei began to think of what has happened concerning the other officers. Things were real tense this year, it seems the council is at edge. Takesun Motohisa, the Tatami Master, has changed the work in Mikawa 3 months before finishing the Market. Fujiko, and the Tatami Master were at edge, and the Shinobi Elder threatens to resign.

"Fools!" Yusei shouted out into the air of the cool afternoon of Autumn.

"They think I have no long term goal don't they, I can see it in their tone. Nobody seems to believe that. No... I have a plan. Strategy will always be a part of me. I have already planned out the war with the Date, the army of Hirotada-Sama is just a minor setback and spice to thrown into the grand strategy. Of course I have planned my long term goals out already, whether I speak them is my opinion and I decide when is the time. The others officers are too judgemental to see that, especially Fujiko-Sama, the one I thought had my back speaks to me as if I have no ambition, no drive. She is wrong. They are all wrong, and they will see as my grand scheme prevails in the end."

Just as he finished, he began to feel the same eerie air of the night he had been attacked. He began to smirk, almost laugh at whoever this assassin was.

"Oh how nostalgic, I feel!" Yusei began to shout,"You seem to be quite the humorous assassin, picking this of all spots to attack. Unfortunately, you've lost the element of surprise. Oh how foolish to attack me. I have lost an eye to an asssassin and yet more keep coming. My blood must be quite the bargain for whoever has hired you."

Then, all of the sudden the eerie prescence vanished.

"Maybe I was just being studied? Analyzed for future attack. Not so foolish of an assassin. Whoever it may be."

Wandering out of the castle, Motohisa had three samurai guards at his side, one armed with a bow and a sword at his hip and the other two with katanas at the ready, held firmly in their hands. Gazing out towards the surrounding countryside Motohisa Thought to himself “My councillor has caused me grave concern due to how he is changing his original plans; I hope he comes up with a better plan to replace it. Now he also has the cheek to ask for another position while he seems inadequate and indecisive in his current one. The head priest is still a danger, she has done nothing to show her loyalty, but I am sure our wise daimyo has realised this and knows, he probably even knew before I tried to warn him before. I don’t like having that Hattori in our ranks either, he is a danger, who knows what he could do if war breaks out with his old clan.” Suddenly, one of the guards gripped his katana more firmly and began to look around hurriedly. Soon after, the other two began to follow suit and do the same, the one with the bow also had an arrow notched. Motohisa then moved into the centre of the men, who formed a triangle around him guarding him. After a few minutes, the guards relaxed themselves, and Motohisa hurriedly began walking off back into the castle, to the safety of his room next to the council. “I decide to leave the castle for once and look what happens” Motohisa thought as he made his way back to his bedchambers.

On a rainy winters day Aliete stood out side his house tears in his eyes as he hugged and kissed his family, for to day was the day that he had been called into the army. Mulike held her 3 children close and looked at Aliete with a arming smile, the same smile he had givin her the day they found out he would be called back in. Dakeu stood in the door way stareing at his brother, waiting for him to go so he could get on with his plans, he did not care that his brother was leaving. He put on a fake smile and hugged Aliete, with a pat on his back Aliete went on his way and one last look at all his remaing family.

"Mother where is farther going?" said Tikue the oldest of the two brothers. Mulike did not answer but her daughter (the oldest now 8) was very clever and knew alot for her age.
"Farthers gone to make you proud and trust me he will." Mulike looked at her daughter and hugged her
"Yes your farther has gone to make you proud sweety."

That night the family were all asleep in Mulikes bed apart from Dakeu who very quietly crept out the door, silent as the night sky. He walked down a small ally way until he found a man coverd in black clothing turned around and looked at Dakeu. The two went off into a small abandond building.

"So what news on the prisoner do you have?" Said Dakeu
The tall man took out a small peice of paper and handed it to Dakeu with out saying a word. Dakeu stood still studying it for a while and then grinned. A spark could be seen i his eyes as he read to the end.

"This is good." he said now he will surely want the Daimyo dead and ill help him, *laughs* oh revenge i can tast it all ready."
