Kaiso felt sick to his stomach as his unit marched towards Kaga. He had always known the risk, but it was all so sudden. "Yamana Ietsura has amassed a massive army and has reclaimed Wakasa. By order of the Daimyo, all soldiers extraneous to local garrisons are ordered to fortify Kaga, lest the Yamana's war path lead into Tokugawa lands." Noto only needed a single yari battalion to maintain order; the second battalion and the bow division were obligated to march... immediately. With the fate of the realm at stake, there was no time to waste on sentiment. Kaiso wondered how long it took before his family learned. He envisioned his father apprehensive, his mother weeping profusely, and his little brother dumbfounded, incapable of comprehending the loss of his other sibling. Then there was Okumi... what would happen to her? Would she come chasing after him? Simply wait for his return? Would she move on, either in grief or impatience? If he fell in battle, would she...

Kaiso was jostled out of his thoughts when the surprisingly calm Susuki spoke up. "Kaiso, we're here."

The ashigaru looked up and his mouth opened. He had heard about Kaga before, but nothing could have prepared him for the sheer size of the place. Noto was a fairly small forth, but Kaga was a fully-fledged castle. There wasn't simply one large courtyard like back home; there was a collection of several, slightly smaller ones, each stacked higher than the next. Within each of these courtyards were more samurai than Kaiso had seen since Mochimori had claimed Noto for the Tokugawa. As Susuki would later explain, they were all the castle's retainers. They weren't the type to march into the field, but were specifically trained and bound to protect Kaga from its enemies. His friend had come here before back when he travelled with his merchant parents; he had expected this, hence why he wasn't as worried. So long as the commander lead the garrison well, they could overcome any attacker.

However, nobody was anticipating the next message to be delivered. Just as his unit started to unpack, a new messenger rode up to the keep. Minutes later, the garrison's commander called all to order, making his announcement from a high balcony. "Rejoice, soldiers of Kaga! The Yamana are no longer marching north! They have been lured southward into the Hattori, where they will no doubt be crushed by Mochimori's army!"

A massive cheer erupted throughout the castle, Kaiso included. He was still assigned to Kaga, but he would still live to see the next frost.

Dakeu was in the market place picking up some things when he noticed an odd number of metsukie around. He saw at least 4 in the market place, he thought he knew what was going on and drew a smile apon his face but to be sure he would have to get infomation. Dakeu walked down a small ally way and then hid behind a pile of rubble.

"Help!" he shouted getting the attention of a metsuki, who came running over to see the problem. As soon as he jumped over the pile of rubble (where Dakeu was hiding and had still not been seen) Dakeu jumped out and grabbed the metsuki from behind pulling him to the ground. He then proceeded to take a small dager from hia belt and held it in front of the metsuki who was terrified.

"Now your going to tell me the truth, did a prisoner escape today from the Daimyos cells? The metsuki hesitated and thn shook his head up and down.
"Good" Said Dakeu and then slit the top of his throat so he could not tell his friends. Dakeu stood up and then wiped his smile off his face when he saw a nother charging at him with his sword out. Dakeu grabbed the sword from the dead metsuki and then blocked the attacker ith ease. The slighty taller metsuki carried on slashing and stabbing but was just being parried by Dakeu. Dakeu blocked once more then stabbed the metsuki through the leg making him fall to the ground. He then slashed twice at the chest not to kill but to paralyse.

"Whats the matter, not know who i am? Im Dakeu amatori and you are going to die." Dakeu throw down the sword on the ground and walked off leaving the dead metsukie and the dieing metsuki to there doom.

"Now to find that prisoner, me and him have bussness to attend to."

Raion was exhausted, tired, in pain, and worst of all...sick. One minute he had been drinking to glory with the great commander and the next he was given an honorable discharge. Why? Well after bathing later that night, he realized that he had been caught in the back with a blade. The doctors said it would eventually heal, but anywhere soon was out of the question, apparently he was lucky to be alive. And so they kicked him out, and told him politely (which made no difference) to return when he was alright. Apparently they would have to approve a set of requests before being allowed back into division.

He was going to the capital, for his mother had wrote to him saying their was no room in the house because she had received another child, which made 9. He was going to temporarily live with his uncle in Mikawa. He dragged a large cart, with everything from Armor to glass that had been at base in the north. The General had promised he would invite him back, but Raion was near positive that soon glory and pride would consume him and the General would forget about Raion.

Raion watched soon after in awe at the sure power of the togukawa as he stood in front of the city walls...

Deep in the castle of Mikawa, Hirotada was laid on his back on a table within a small room. The room was filled with a sweet smell of incense, candles were arranged along all the walls giving the room a faint orange glow and a soft melodic tune was being played by a lone musician strumming a shamisen. There was a deep calm about this small retreat. Stood over Hirotada was a Geisha who was kneading his stomach, performing ampuku, aiming to destress the Daimyo who, as of late was becoming increasingly worried about political affairs. Hitoshi was also present in the room, sat on a small stool by Hirotada's head.

Hirotada groaned as the Geisha pummled his stomach. He then opened his eyes and turned his head slightly towards Hitoshi and sighed.

"Things haven't been running smoothly this season." Hirotada admitted. Hitoshi merely nodded, he was present as a listening ear, carrying the burden of the Daimyo's complaints.

"Officers arguing in my hall, vague short term orders..." He paused. "I'm not even sure the Shinobi Elder is going to remain with us for much longer. His heart's just not in the job it seems, Hattori sympathiser, I should have seen it coming. Oooof!" The Geisha recoiled back, fearful that she had caused the Daimyo pain but he waved for her to continue.

"I shall have to reconsider his position after the next season. As for me, I am due to head back to Fukushima shortly but I don't even know where my fate lies. The Daimyo of the most powerful clan in Japan, clueless as to where he should march his army. People must think I'm mad allowing another to plot my military maneuvers. I will wait patiently for Yusei-san to issue his orders, I'm sure my army will be put to good use.

I also hear that the prisoner that dared to enter my hall and ask for exile has escaped. No doubt he will want me dead, at least I would if I was in his shoes. Nevermind, what's one more to the list? I probably have tens of people plotting my very death as we speak."

Hitoshi screwed his face up, clearly not enjoying the Daimyo talking about his own assassination.

"Oh well..." Hirotada finally sat upright on the table and nodded at the Geisha, she picked up her belongings and then left the room.

"Have you given Ieyasu those scrolls I told you about?" Hirotada asked.

"Yes my Lord."

Hirotada forced a smile. "Good, in the event of my untimely death, I need to know that he would be able to pick up where I left off." He then stood up. Hitoshi quickly followed suit and placed a Kimono around Hirotada.

"Thank you for listening Hitoshi, I'm glad to have a sympathetic ear at times." Hirotada walked slowly towards the door his mind cluttered with mixed thoughts. He stopped at the threshold.

"Oh Hitoshi, after the next season, I plan to have a tea ceremony. Just the officers and I. I'm hoping it will provide some light relief after some of the strains as of late. Please make the necessary preparations for when I return." Hirotada then opened the basic wooden door and walked into the cold night air.

The city layed in fron of Hino. It has been four years since he had fled it. He hoped he would return as maester, but that dream shattered a long time ago. But what caught Hino's attention was the changes. The roads were stoned, new buildings rose, the walls have been improved here and there. Children ran with wooden toys, laughing in what could be one of the last warm days of the autumn. Up he street, Hino discovered a market, with people shouting and salesmen boosting their products. Women hanged in groups, smiling at each other's words.

As Hino wondered by, he passed by a blacksmith, hamering a black metal. A feeling of melancoly struck him. The man worcked at his father's palace when he was a child. The man raised his eyes to Hino. He smiled and asked if Hino was interested in any of the swords hanging for sale. Hino woke up from the dreamy state and refused politely.

The newcomer saw many people he knew, but no one recognised him. When he left the city, he was still growing, and two years spent locked in a cell can do many things to a man. They all seemed to have succesfully stelled down, having many kids.

"I will forgive you. A man's misery shouldn't destroy the happines of the people he wells for". though Hino.

The sun had already clutched the horizon in a tight hug. Hino tok his horse from the stables and as he was putting the city he grew up behind, he took a good look at it.

"I'll be back."

Hirotada was putting the finishing touches to his battle armour as he prepared once again to leave for Fukushima. He had just read the scroll of fate and was relatively satisfied at the officer's proposed plans for the upcoming season. Hitoshi was stood by the main doors of the castle awaiting the Daimyo's exit. The castle was empty, it was the dead of night, the only time of day that Hirotada chose to travel between Mikawa and Fukushima between the season's events to avoid any unnecessary encounters on the roads.

"How do I look?" He asked as he straightened himself holding his horned helmet under his arms.

"Perfect." Hitoshi replied whilst mid bow.

Hirotada smiled. "Good. Now a couple of things I want you to inform Ieyasu of. First of all, it is unlikely that I will be able to return to Mikawa for some time. I am due to sail to Sado to challenge the Daimyo of the Date personally. No doubt it will be a long and drawn out siege. So that means that next season Ieyasu will be in charge of proceedings in my absence." There was a pause. Hitoshi acknowledged what had been said and Hirotada continued. "Inform the officers that he is to be given the same respect as I am. If I find out otherwise, their heads will be on chop blocks. Oh and the tea ceremony I had planned for next season can wait until my return, we will have more to celebrate then anyway, no doubt the Date's demise.

Secondly, I have once again heard rumblings from Mokudo that he is to resign once we go to war with the Hattori. I am not been held to ransom like this. I need an officer who is dedicated to my cause, not having second thoughts, it's just not productive. He has barely shown his face in my hall and that is no doubt due to his allignment with the Hattori. As of now he is stripped of his position. Ieyasu can commence the enlistment of a new Shinobi Elder in due course, preferably before I return. As for Mokudo, I was considering having him executed, but I will let him live, he has done a service for me and for that I am at least grateful."

Hirotada took a deep breath. He was slightly apprehensive about leaving his empire in the hands of his son for the first time, but he knew it would be a good test for him. No doubt in years to come Ieyasu would become head of the clan and he need opportunity to prove himself.

"Master, I have recieved some news earlier. The prisoner, Hino that escaped from your prison. He was tracked down and executed by one of Yorimasa-sama's students." Hitoshi informed the Daimyo.

"Excellent, that's one less headache to deal with. Well, I better be off." Hitoshi opened the doors for Hirotada. The moon was shining brightly in the sky casing it's crystal glow across the courtyard. At the foot of the steps stood a riderless large bay horse awaiting it's master. It was flanked by 6 mounted guards. "Kanji, I am coming my friend." Hirotada mouthed as he swept out of the castle towads his mount. He took a look back at the castle and stopped momentarily. Ieyasu was now stood next to Hitoshi, he waved to his father, a first sign of acknowledgment for some considerable time. Hirotada smiled and nodded, he could now go to Fukushima content.

Flanked by his twelve personal bodyguards, Mokudo limps away from Mikawa castle. No ill will way borne; Mokudo had his priorities, and Hirotada had his own. Sadly, those priorities clashed in the most spectacular way, and he could not remain as an officer in the Tokugawa court. But, if Hirotada had the audacity to attempt to have him executed, the twelve Kisho Ninja would defend him to their last breath. Each one had sworn an oath that as long as any one of them was still alive, no harm would come of Mokudo.

With a sigh, Mokudo quickens his pace, hoping to catch a wagon train to Hattori lands. He would never be able to make it all the way there on foot.

"Ah, Hirotada, in another life we could have been great friends, but fate has put us on opposite sides of this unfortunate conflict. May the gods and our ancestors guide us both. I hope to meet you in the afterlife, so that we may laugh about the foolishness of the world"

One of the Kisho turns his head to look at his master, a questioning look in his eyes. Mokudo just shakes his head and waves the man off. "Never you mind. Never you mind."

The sun beamed down into the great Courtyard of Mikawa castle. It was the stroke of noon and the sound of several incoherent chattering voices could be heard from the market square on the other side of the main gates. Hitoshi was shuffling quickly towards the gates with a large scroll tucked under his arm, flanked by two guards one of whom was carrying a large box.

As they reached the gates the empty handed guard opened them and the three men walked around to the other side of them and faced one of the castle's walls.

"This will do." Hitoshi ordered and he thrust the scroll into the hands of the empty handed guard. He stepped back and observed the guard unravel the scroll and then affix it to the wall. In large letters the title of the scroll read, "SHINOBI ELDER POSITION AVAILABLE." The second guard placed the large, currently empty wooden box beneath the scroll.

"Ieyasu hopes that box will be overflowing with applications." Hitoshi mused. "Time will tell." He then turned to the market square. "You can leave me here thank you, the young master has given me a pay rise, I have some trinkets to buy." He then bounded off into the many stalls that were set up for the day leaving the two guards looking at each other bemused.

Silent, completely silent; Nothing moved, the house barely made a sound. Only the occasional snoring of Raion'a uncle made near a whisper. Raion sat in front of a fire with a blade in his hand. He sat there running the blade through his hand, occasionally cutting his skin. Raion did not mind the pain, it let his mind escape from his future. Uncertainty clouded his thoughts and anger of distrust made fire rage in his eyes.

Without warning the door to the small house swung open. Raion flew out his katana from his hands at the intruder. But this man who had entered carried no weapon in his hands. He wore a black cloak and hood, which shaded his face. He quickly dropped a letter on the floor and sped out the house. Confused by the whole scene, Raion carefully walked over and picked of the message.

I know who you are. I am like you. You have potential, and so do I. We have the opportunity to shake the world to its core. Meet me at the market tomorrow, and I will show you a world of opportunity.

When Dakeu heard of the escaped prisoner being killed, his plan fell apart and he almost gave up. As he walked home he saw a sighn saying the time for a new Shinobe elder had come, it gave him a new idea, that might just work. He walked upto the market place and bought a scroll, then proceeded to walk home. As he did so he thought about how he would kill the Daimyo: Stabb him in the back, Shoot him with a bow, burn down the room he was in or even chalenge him to a duel and put poison on the blade so a small cut would kill him. The plans formed in his head and a small smile came upon his face.

When he got home Mulike was making dinner, Noodles, it was called it came fom across the sea from China. Mulike loved food from other places and was paticularly fond of asian dishes from main land asia. Mulike and Dakeu did not talked much, they were allways keeping close eyes on each other though. Mulike watched as Dakeu carried a scroll, brush and a small pot of what looked to be poison but she shook her ead and decicde it was a bottle a Sake.

When Dakeu got to his room he closed the door and wedged it shut, so not to be disturbed. He spent hours working on his notes, there were quite alot: One to get through the gates, One to get through the resricted area, One for the daimyo himself and also one for when he had slain the Daimyo. The one where he had slain the Daimyo read.

He took my world from me and it cost me my heart, its only fair i take his heart. Who ever reads this will know the Daimyo is deadand i have suceeded, me a man who is no assassin, is Tokugawa and has neverdoubted the Daimyo BUT life can be cruel and when i lost my love, in the fires of war, it enraged me and i felt a urge to kill!
And i dont care if i die, just as long as i suceed!

Dakeu stood up put his cloak on and left for the Daimyo, not looking back. He sneaked out the house and walked down the main road, a fire in his eye. The Daimyo would pay!

Susuki stared at Kaiso, who in turn stared over the castle walls at the Ikko Ikki army. Kaiso had always made it known how much he disliked the Ikko Ikki and their beliefs, so having such a large force nearby was incredibly tense for him, ally or not.

Finally, Susuki sighed and spoke up. "They're not going to march on Noto, Kaiso. If one thing can definitely be said about them, it's that they are horrible at protecting their lands. The new Takoaka uprising will doubtlessly move against them, and this army will march home to counterattack."

Kaiso shrugged, giving a sarcastic snort. "Is it just me or are the Hattori horrible at maintaining their lands? Two of their provinces have had peasant rebellions and it feels like every few years a new clan pops out of their foreheads like acne."

Susuki laughed. "At least they aren't the only ones having trouble. Practically all of northern Shikoku has become anarchic, mainly thanks to Christians." He paused, noting Kaiso's intruiged expression. "I'm honestly surprised that you aren't more in the loop. When we first met, you seemed far more knowledgable than your fisherman background suggested. You even beat me to the punch on some topics. Ever since, however, you seem out of the loop."

Kaiso hesitated before answering. "My uncle took up occupation as a ninja. My parents rarely acknowledge him, but he'd often visit Noto with worldly news. Doesn't really happen anymore; not only am I no longer in Noto, but he also got recruited as a kisho ninja in the army. Yet another reason my parents disavow him."

"Did he teach you any ninja tricks?"

"A few emergency survival methods, but that's about it. Before you ask, no; I have no intention of auditioning for the Shinobi Elder position. I'm nowhere near that level of skill, let alone my lack of political knowledge." Kaiso sighed. "And yet..."

Susuki frowned at the incomplete sentence. "Yet what?"

"I've had plenty of time to think here in Kaga."

"Especially since-" Susuki cut himself short as Kaiso flashed him a glare. It hadn't taken long for Kaiso to learn that Okumi wasn't the type to wait.

Kaiso sighed again before continuing. "When I first become a soldier, I just wanted to help protect my family and home. Now that I'm away, effectively part of the front lines, I've come to realize something. What I really want is to help make a difference in this world, and as far as I'm concerned, the Tokugawa ARE the world."

Susuki's eyes widened. "So are you saying that you want to change the Tokugawa? Bold words."

Kaiso smiled. "The Tatami Master is looking for someone to be a Master of the Arts. Thought I'd give it a shot."

"So you'd pass over directing external affairs for internal ones?"

The ashigaru just gazed at his bow. "Nothing so grand. I just want more arrows."
