In the courtyard of the temple complex stands the large pyre that is dedicated to the gods. It is here that the Head Priestess Fujiko has called for a regular assembly of the whole clan. Everyone is free to speak their mind. Every week a proposition will be put to the vote and that vote will influence the future of the Tokugawa.

What is the Clan Proposition of the Week?

Simply put it is an active veto. It is your chance to influence official orders and thus the direction of the campaign. A Clan Proposition of the Week will be added to Fujiko's official orders for the next set of updates and the one who suggested it will be given the proper credit for it. As long as the proposition is part of the Head Priestess' responsibilities, it will become an official order. If it touches another officer's responsibilities, the daimyo will make the final call.

How does it work?

Propositions can be made at any given time. If there is no veto going on, one of the propositions will be selected by me on either Friday or Saturday. The proposition will be put to a vote in this thread right here. You then have until the following Tuesday evening to vote 'yay' or 'nay' on the proposition. If the majority votes 'yay', the proposition will be included in the official orders for the next set of updates. In order for something to be chosen as Clan Proposition of the Week, it should be put down in this topic here. (This is not to discourage discussions in other topics. You are free to do so. It simply makes it easier for me to keep track of the proposals.)

It is my hope that the other officers will also keep an eye on this thread and think about the suggestions made. Your ideas might make it into the official orders even without being labeled Clan Proposition of the Week.

Note: There will be no Clan Proposition of the Week for this set of updates as time is short for the officers right now. However, there will be one next week. You are free to start the discussions, of course, but you might want to wait just a little bit until the officers have laid out their plans in the Daimyo's Hall.

As Ryu and Tomohisa carried Rodrigo over the front entrance of the temple, they picked up his legs and removed his shoes. Then they sat him down on the Tatami floor with a thud. "Shoes off inside the temple," Ryu said simply. "Remember that rule."

Tomohisa stepped forward and opened the sliding door to the adjoining room. Fujiko was sitting on a low table, practicing her calligraphy on a scroll. "He's here," the ronin informed her. "Send him in then," she replied, not looking up.

Tomohisa ushered the Portugese into the room with a hand gesture and closed the door behind him, so they were alone now. Laying aside her brush, Fujiko eyed the man up and down. An involuntary smile crossed her lips. "Impressive," she said, "you still have all your limbs attached."

"Indeed," Rodrigo coughed. He seemed to have regained his composure a little. "You wanted to speak to me, my lady?"

"Yes. Despite our differences in the market back there, I can appreciate a man who speaks his mind and still manages to abide by what the clan decides. You have a keen and analytical mind, Rodrigo-san and you are knowledgeable in the field of trade. All good qualities. The only mistake you made was coming on a little too strong.

I have an offer for you. I need a man with your talents. I can see past our differences in nationality and belief, if you can. There is of course one condition. Your proposal for Nanban trade has been rejected. I do not want to hear anything in the future about such nonsense from you and I do not want you suggesting anything that spreads Christianity in our lands. In return I will put you under my personal protection as my advisor. You must have been afraid for your life the last few days."

Rodrigo stood there for a moment, mulling the matter over in his mind. Finally he bowed. "If that is the case, I graciously accept your offer, Lady Fujiko."

"Good," Fujiko said, picking up her pen again, "you should get to work then. My companions have been working day and night to make this temple habitable again. I expect you to help out. During the next season you will assist me in gathering proposals from the people and bringing them to the officers' attention. One more thing. I expect you to make an effort in understanding our culture while you are in my service. Learn to interact with the people without bumping heads with them."

Rodrigo backed out of the room and closed the door with a deep breath. He didn't notice Ryu sneak up behind him. When he turned around he almost screamed. His face was so close. He wondered how this man could be so silent. After an uncomfortably long pause Ryu whipped a tool from his belt. Rodrigo cringed, expecting a blade, but was surprised when the ronin put a wooden hammer in his hand. "You know how to fix a roof?"

Rodrigo grabed the hammer from the man and bluntly said "no, but I can try." Although Rodrigo was the son of a noble throughout his expedition he had learned a lot more about carpentry on the ships and did many ship repairs. He soon learned, however carpentry of a building was quite different from the carpentry of a ship. He worked into the wee hours of the night with the other men untill, the man he seemed to be the head of the other men told they could leave. Rodrigo then went to the inn to get some well deserved rest.

Icorisu walk up to the run down temple and is abruptly stopped by 2 ronin who grab him and start carrying him towards the gate but Icorisu tells them " i am Fujiko-samas new apprentice she asked me to aid her Rodrigo and you in the reconstruction of the old temple i'm handy with a hammer and have need to mend many walls while training solders in the sword school of Sagami" with that he went to the nearby bamboo forest chopped down a dozen with his katana and started to repair the east wall of the temple he worked until nearly midnight then returned to his home in the upper district of the city after finally regaining the honor he had lost at failing to become one of lord Tokugawas officers but the he realized he had one more sop to make this day

Eventually he reached the inn known as "Leiras Trick" not the most reputable place but it was not the reputation that drew him here it was one of the guests Rodrigo the foreigner Icorisu walk up to the inn keeper and asked "Which room is Rodrigo in" "Top floor last door on your right" the inn keeper said surprised to see someone who looked of samurai linage in his inn Icorisu walked up to the room and knocked on the door

Rodrigo answered with a yell and reached for his sword thinking Icorisu their to end his life

Icorisu looked at him in amusement laughing on the inside a foreigner thinks he can best me in a duel he thought then he spoke "I am not hear to kill you i am here to tell you that i am Fujiko-samas new apprentice so we shall be seeing much more off each other I vow i will not harm you without reason but if you cross me or do anything that could harm Fujiko-sama or the clan you will not have time to draw that puny little blade of yours" he said with a sneer to emphasis his point without leaving his spot outside the door he knocked away the blade put a hole in the door and drew his katana in one movement then he left.

Walking down the stairs as he passed the innkeeper and dropped 900 koku and said "This should pay for the damages and to have Rodrigo given the treatment deserving of a adviser to the high priestess" then almost as a second thought he whispered "don't tell him i gave the money, I still want to be able to scare him he need not no of my generosity towards him. This should keep you quite" he said dropping another 50 koku

Fujiko sighed happily as she slid into the warm water up to her neck. The temple itself might have been in disrepair, but it had one thing going for it and that was the small onsen (hot spring) in the backyard. She was enjoying the hot bath after giving her first set of orders immensly.

Genma was with her, holding her clothes while the Head Priestess was bathing, politely having his back turned on her. "About those two," he began. "It seems as if Rodrigo and Icorisu caused a bit of a scene at the inn."

Fujiko groaned. "How bad?"

"Just some property damage. The innkeeper said it's been paid for."

"I can see why he wanted instructions in the art of diplomacy. Icorisu-san is a little too quick in drawing his sword."

"Your advisor isn't exactly sociable either, Fujiko-sama. The lack of understanding for our culture is a problem for him. Did you perchance ever own a cat? You seem to be partial to strays."

Fujiko smiled. "They may be a little rough around the edges, but Rodrigo has intelligence and Icorisu has his heart in the right spot. Don't be so quick to write them off as charity cases. I expect a lot from both of them. Besides," she said, standing up and brushing back her long, black hair, "don't tell me they didn't come in handy with fixing this sorry shack of a temple."

Genma stole a furtive glance at his mistress as she stepped out of the pool and then held out the robe for her to put on. "We've certainly finished a lot sooner than expected," he admitted. "It shouldn't be a problem to hold our first Clan Assembly soon."

That morning after a quick training session to keep his blade sharp Icorisu returned to the temple and started on the carving he had planned on the east wall a image of Bishamonten playing go against the original shogun of japan Minamoto no Yoritomo while Bishamonten played and was wining with pieces that looked remarkably like Tokugawa Hirotada, Minamoto no Yoritomo was losing with pieces resembling the Ashikagu shogunate and all the clans who fear the Tokugawa.

"Very impressive" said Yuki, studying the mural. He walked behind Icorisu. "A bold political statement. Me, I tend not to involve myself in such matters."

"it was an inspiration i fought almost every clans army and have yet to see one as disciplined well trained or in such high moral as the armies of the Tokugawa and besides if i put anything that even looked like we were on even terms with thee other clans the nearest metsuke would be on me in a flash" at this they both laughed heartily after the laugh he turned serious besides is the ashikagu shogun going to go into Tokugawa lands just to stop me from making a mural of them getting their a** handed to them

"The Shogun is a fool, but he will be stubborn." replied Yuki. "Besides, you never know what he has planned in these dark times. Anyway, I didn't catch your name. What was it again?"

Icorisu smiled finally someone who he could get along with without the use of his katana "My name is Icorisu Nobunaga Master of the tatami sword school and yours"

Yuiki smiled back, finally glad to see someone who didn't judge him because of his appearance. "My name is Yuki Suzuki. I used to serve in the army, cavalry mind. Now, I supply the clan with rice from my paddies. Now, my bones are killing me. Is there a place where an old soldier may rest his weary bones?"

"Sure Icorisu-san. But you do know you're paying?" Yuki joked, and started walking out.

The sun had just gone down and in the temple courtyard the pyre was brightly burning. The 12 ronin had spent the whole afternoon to stack up the wood. Some people had already assembled, either standing around the fire and talking in little groups or having taken a seat on the stones in the courtyard.

Fujiko, dressed in her best robe, stood at the entrance of the temple's main bulding, flanked by Hayate and Genma. Rodrigo was also there, though slightly in the background. He had complained a bit when Fujiko had prudently decided to have him wear a kimono, but eventually put it on. That simple fact alone made him stand out less than before when he was wearing his western clothes.

Fujiko nodded towards Tomohisa who in turn pulled back the wooden log strapped to the ceiling of the bell tower and thus announced the beginning of the assembly with a loud gong. The crowd immediately went silent and Fujiko stepped out into the light with her companions.

"Greetings and welcome on the temple grounds, my fellow clansmen and women," she began. "We are gathered here tonight for our first annual Clan Assembly. It is my pleasure to tell you that our first year as Tokugawa-sama's officers has gone well. The Realm Divide and the Shogun have not brought us to our knees. We have conquered two new provinces from our enemies to bring peace to Nihon. We have liberated the Ikko Ikki from their cruel Uesugi masters, as we have risen against the oppressive Imagawa, and they have promised in return their eternal gratitude and support to make our lord Shogun.

Now that everything is in place, it is time for you to have your say. For remember that the Tokugawa care about each and every one of you. No one man alone can unify the land. It requires the support of you, the loyal citizens of our clan and thus you are entitled to shape the future of our clan along with us officers and our Lord Hirotada-sama.

Speak up, good people! Whether you want to point out something the officers have overlooked, suggest a new strategy or otherwise comment on the proceedings in the Daimyo's Hall. By the end of the week one of your suggestions will be put to the vote and, if passed by the people, will be included in my next set of official orders.

Speak your mind and fear no persecution on this holy ground. Now to start this sacred assembly, let us join together in song to ask the favour of the kami (gods)."

Fujiko took a deep breath and then lifted her chin. Beginning an ancient, well-known hymn to the gods, her voice rose in a gentle crescendo to reach the hearts of her fellow clansmen. Her 12 ronin, albeit terribly out of tune, were the first to chime in. After a nudge in the ribs by Genma even Rodrigo began to hum along, despite not knowing the lyrics. Soon every man, woman and child was immersed in song, their voices joining as one and the tunes being carried wide and far across the city by the chill evening air to announce to everyone the beginning of the Assembly.

When the last tunes had trailed off into the night, Fujiko stood expectant to hear what the people of the Tokugawa would bring forward in terms of suggestions.
