Yuki was the first to speak. "Priestess, I think that we should launch an offensive against the Chosokabe on Shikoku. Those idiots believe that the Ashikaga are in a fit state to rule our land, and have declared open war on us. This would give us a strategic advantage in the eventual war against the Hattori. As for the Hattori, we should not be placing all of our trust in them. I know from experience how unpredictable they can be. That is all." |

"My lady a old man said coming out of a small crowd, it seems many worrie about the econemy side of things so i have somethink to say. We should uild up our sea force and maybe blockade some ports or raid some trade roots. Though not the most honourable thing to do it may just work, so i say rais our fleets and blockade and raid." The man bowed and with his walking stick went off back to the market place. |

walking out of the crowd Icorisu spoke "As we all know the date have declared open war against us, it is my opinion that we should take their lands as swiftly as possible then build major economic bases in their land thus keeping our economy far out of the dark hands of the shogunate and their allies" with that he walked into the temple to tile the floor with pieces of dulled multi-colored clay shards that he'd been making all day |

RUfus was the next to speak. ''My priestess, I find that it would be preferable to send some scouts to see the date's northern settlements as we have no information about them at the moment. THis could make it dangerous for the daimyo who is wandering out of safety to destroy the Ueseugi rabble. I also think we should start scouting the hattori's settlements as it was a very strange move ot send an army at Mino by them, so it would be good to see there settlements for a future war with them as I am afraid they are starting to see through our generous gifts.'' Rufus took a breath and then finished ''I have some spare silk from my trip to China I would like to donate to you for the decoration of the temple maybe'' he said showing the head priestess the silk. He then walked into the temple placing the silk on a table nearby and then started walking back towards the palace. |

The evening was quiet. An autumn chill had crept up on Mikawa and the new silk curtains were rustling in the wind. Ryu placed an oil lamp on the floor of the main temple hall and waited patiently for Fujiko to acknowledge his presence. She had been staring out the back porch with a thoughtful frown on her face for the better part of the afternoon. "Have them come in," she said shortly, not bothering to turn around. Ryu simply nodded and beckoned for Icorisu and Rodrigo to enter. "First of all," she began with her arms folded in front of her, "good job in restoring the temple. Both of you. I had my doubts that we could survive the winter in this shack of a temple, but you've proven me otherwise through your hard work and effort. All the rotten wood has been replaced and the new silk curtains add much needed decorum to this place. Just one thing, Icorisu. This is a place of worship. While the carving on the east wall is quite beautiful, please refrain from adding too obvious political messages into your art in the future. Visiting heads of state and emissaries might get the wrong idea and that might make things difficult for me." She finally turned around to her advisor and apprentice. "Now then, I'm sure you're aware of the delay in orders we've experienced. It's nobody's fault. Things like that happen when communication lines are made problematic during the winter. The simple fact of the matter is, however, that it puts us in a tight spot. We don't have much time left before the next orders have to go out. That means also less time for propositions and votes unfortunately. At best we'd have 2 days to gather the clan's ideas and 2 days for a vote to be held and that wouldn't make for a very comprehensive result. Don't get me wrong. I'd like to see a Clan Proposition of the Week, but we might have to put it on hold this time due to time restraints. The officers will have to hustle as well in their planning this season. I'd like to go forward with gathering proposals. You two should keep your eyes and ears sharp as well. But unless somebody sweeps me off my feet with their idea over the next two days, my feeling is that we won't have a Proposition of the Week to vote on. Instead I'll collect the ideas presented here and present them in the Daimyo's Hall for consideration. I want you to put the word out that there will be no formal Clan Assembly like the last time. Instead everyone is always welcome to come to the temple and present their ideas whenever they feel is a good time. That'll be all." With that Fujiko dismissed the two men. Hopefully there would be some good propositions, but right now she had to concentrate on the Daimyo's Hall and though she didn't state it directly to them, she had every confidence in Icorisu and Rodrigo to run the temple and Clan Assembly while she herself dealt with the other officers. Icorisu walks into the temple and bows deeply "Milady have you heard of Rodrigo being anywhere in our lands has he died or ran away for I've seen nothing of his presence" "but that is not the main reason I am here I've seen an Idea for a blitzkrieg or flash war and it interested me I understand that you are not the Kensei but could you bring it up to him" as he turned to go he suddenly remembered "and my apologies about the mural but had i represented the mural as it is in our religion I may have been beheaded by the daimyo or worse stoned by the civilians and I will submit all ideas to my future work to you as to protect the clans diplomatic expectations and should you wish any specific wishes for art in the temple or the gardens please let me know and it shall be commenced immediately"

I think it may be unwise to grant new avssals on the territtories conquested on the east. It may help us gaining a trade route, but later on they will turn enemies. So i think we shouldn't do that. |

Mikawa province looks beautiful this time of year, Chikage thought to herself. The vibrant colours of the leaves emphasised against a backdrop of grass and fields were particularly enchanting, the citizens of the Tokugawa, hard at work during the day, had retired for the night, leaving an eerie calm about the place as she slunk her way over the castle walls, step by step. She had always done her best to avoid detection, but tonight she aimed to be especially careful; tonight an officer of the Tokugawa was going to die by her hand. He shook her head, and brought her thoughts back to the task at hand. With a swift movement which came naturally to her, she hoisted herself onto the wall and surveyed the scene before her. As expected, security in the Tokugawa capital was far from light, sentries patrolled the grounds and by the walls in groups sufficient enough to deter any assassin. The temple itself was not far from her, but she would never make it there without being spotted, at least not directly. With undeterred purpose Chikage made her way around the walls; she had been stalking her targets for a while now, studying their movements, looking for any weaknesses for her to exploit, and it just so happened that the Tokugawa’s Head Priestess was fond of a certain poorly-defended back entrance to the temple, a densely vegetated pathway where the two had come perilously close to meeting not so long ago. The way that the priestess conducted herself was alien to Chikage, she had very little contact with other women in her, and found the stark contrast between them to be fascinating; perhaps that is why she slipped up, or perhaps the priestess really was in-tune with a spiritual side of life that Chikage had never experienced, either way she knew that the priestess had become aware of her presence that night, her wind-whipped hair having given her a surreal, uncanny beauty. It all mattered little though, the time for studying her opponent was over, it has not taken long for her to come to the conclusion that the priestess was the pillar that gave the Tokugawa such strength, not only in her interactions with the people, but also with the daimyo of the Tokugawa, and her fellow officers; her sharp mind and silver tongue were a greater threat to the Hattori than any blade, and her and Mole had both come to the conclusion that her death would plunge the Tokugawa people into turmoil. It had to be done. The back entrance to the temple proved to be as easy to infiltrate as she expected, it was poorly guarded and the trees there provided an ample means by which to obfuscate her movements. She slipped in through a window, undetected. Steeling her mind for the precarious task ahead, she slid through the halls of the temple’s interior, taking extreme to walk softly; the temple was obviously very old, she couldn’t risk its creaks and groans in protest at her intrusion alerting the priestess’ guards, the building’s support beams proved to be the perfect place to hide above ground level. She listened intently at each room, guiding herself through the temple safely and avoiding incurring the wrath of the sleeping guards; her heart raced intensely, it took her mere minutes to find her target, yet it felt to her as though she had spent an eternity stalking through the halls like a spectre. The priestess was on her own, vulnerable, her back turned away from her encroaching demise. This was the moment that she had been waiting for, the first turn of the wheel of change. A deathly calm overtook Chikage. |

Fujiko was up late that night. She had long since told Ryu and Genma to turn in as they were already nodding off. Even had the dire situation in the Daimyo's Hall not kept her awake, the encounter on the path had done little to calm her mind. Yet she hadn't told anyone of the presence from that day. She couldn't risk everyone getting paranoid. Her ronin would insist on tightening security. But that would frighten away anyone who wished to come to the temple to make a proposal. People were scared enough as it was. As she was sitting in the temple's main hall, contemplating those matters over her calligraphy exercises, suddenly a strong gust of wind swept into the room from the porch outside. It wasn't your random autumn chill of the night. The air was freezingly cold. Cold as death istself. All the blood drained from Fujiko's hands and face and she started shivering, but remained calm enough in order not to make it obvious. She recognised the presence. It was the exact same feeling as that afternoon. Behind me? She concentrated. Yes, but further up. On top of the beams. Fujiko laid down the brush in silence, feeling the eyes on her back, she slid her hand up her sleeve where she had hidden a tanto after the last encounter. Even as she did so, the futility of the action was clear to her. There was no way she could defeat a trained kunoichi with just a dagger. There was only one other approach left. Fujiko bit her lower lip. As the taste of blood spread through her mouth, the pain rushed through her head momentarily, sweeping away the fear and clearing her mind. The shivering stopped. "So we meet again," she said, keeping her voice under tight control. The shadowy presence didn't respond. "Chikage, wasn't it?" Fujiko sensed a chance. The assasin knew that she had been discovered now, but hadn't made a move yet. A lesser ninja would have panicked by now, either taken the shot or run. Fujiko couldn't help but admire the woman's resolve and tight grip on her emotions. "You're different, aren't you?" Fujiko went on. "The ninja clans of Koga and Iga guard their secrets closely. Only the children of the hidden villages get taught the arts. But you're not from a ninja family, aren't you?" Still no answer. Only the looming presence of a predator ready for the kill. "I'm good at analyzing people, you know. There's no hate in you. No anger. No emotion at all. You're only doing what you are told to do." Fujiko fought down the impulse to turn around and look at her would-be-killer. Any movement at all could spell her doom at this point. There was one reaction she couldn't mask or hold off, however. As Fujiko closed her eyes and listened to Chikage's very soul, tears began to flow from her eyes. "I cannot help but feel sorry for you. You never knew what it means to have a family. You keep the pain bottled up inside of you. The pain of being looked upon as a mere tool. No more than an object in your master's eyes. Of never being allowed to be a happy little girl." At that moment Fujiko turned her head ever so slightly. Her tears were clearly visible by the candlelight's reflection and a smile crossed her face. "I can understand. Let me bear the pain for the both of us. You see, we are similar, you and I. The day my family was murdered in front of my eyes, the little girl that was Izayoi Fujiko also died. I'm merely what is left of her. I even contemplated suicide. My friends have given me a reason to live again. I have no regrets." Fujiko took one last deep breath. "If my death is unavoidable, then let me give you this one piece of advice. Don't let the little girl that was Chikage die before she lived. Let her come out and play sometime, even if it's just for a minute of your life." The Head Pristess was now completely at peace. There was only one thing left to be said. "I'm ready now. What will it be, Chikage? Will you kill me?" |

A plethora of emotions welled up inside Chikage as the priestess said her piece; her hands trembled, her drawn sword clattering ever so slightly. This woman presumed to understand her as if she had known her all her life... she felt talked down to, and a rage built up inside her. Yet there was such honesty in Fujiko’s words, not a hint of spite nor a condescending tone, even in the face of peril; she had not expected that, it proved oddly comforting for her, never before had anyone talked to her as if she were an equal, as if her thoughts, her experiences mattered in the slightest. “Let her come out and play sometime, even if it's just for a minute of your life." Those words ran through her head over and over again, tormented by the chance at a life she never thought she would have, visions of her past blurring her mind to the world around her. She wanted to scream, but knew it would be her end. It took her several minutes sat in darkness and silent contemplation before she even realised that she was still in the temple, facing the priestess in total silence. She shook her head and brought herself back to reality. It wasn’t until she noticed the tears running down the priestess’ cheeks that Chikage realised that she too was crying for the first time since her masters had broken her of that habit and stripped away her emotions along with her childhood. She couldn’t stand it; the thought of ending Fujiko’s life now seemed intolerable, what if there was a chance for something better? Could she truly change her lot in life? She knew that the answers would likely die with the priestess. She wanted to hear her speak again, she wanted to sit and listen to her words and cry, and cry and cry. Her heart pounded in her chest erratically, torn between her duty and herself; she tried to speak, but the words choked back in her throat painfully. The stirring of the guards startled her, either it was a routine patrol or the noise had alerted someone, it mattered little. She didn’t want to tear herself away, but she knew that if she did not flee she would be caught and executed, and she wasn’t prepared to allow that to happen, not right now; she needed to hear more, her hands gripped her sword so tightly that her unkempt nails tore into her palms, and small droplets of blood began to drip to the floor. Her time was up, someone approached from the direction she had entered the building. With a pained expression she leapt through the nearest window, and scrambled her outside. Several of the castle guards noticed her and gave chase. Still dazed and confused, her instincts kicked in and she made her way to the walls of the central courtyard like a bat out of hell, putting tremendous ground between her and her pursuers. With little time for precision she launched herself over the walls, falling painfully on the other side, and tumbling down the steep slope into darkness. Reeling from the fall, she began to limp painfully away from the castle. Her escape was made; no guards or search parties would be able to find her in the dead of night, but she had suffered for it. Cursing under her breathe she made for the trees, where it would be safe for her to collapse from her injuries. She was determined to stay alive. She had to go back; she had to see the priestess again if it killed her; as the leaves began to crackle under her feet, her mind was filled with so many unanswered questions, but they would have to wait as the night closed in around her vision and her wounds gave way to unconsciousness. |

Fujiko could feel Chikage's turmoil as they sat in silence. First she was indignant, then enranged and finally she allowed herself to cry. The assassin without emotions was now bursting with them. All but one that was, the desire to kill. The room finally became warm once more, bathed in the soothing light of the candles. The cold chill of death was gone. Fujiko remained silent, waiting for Chikage to speak. The footsteps from outside the hall called both women back to reality. It was no more than a dark blur that passed by Fujiko and lept out of the window. Seconds later Ryu and Genma entered the room. Both looked puzzled. "We heard your voice. Was there somebody in here with you, Fujiko-sama?" It was Genma in his subdued voice who asked while scanning the room with his eyes. "Nobody." Fujiko didn't even have to think about her answer. Then shouts of alarm could be heard from outside. Ryu quickly went to the window and looked outside. "Looks like the castle guards found an intruder. Come on, Genma. Let's go see what's happening." "Stay right where you are," Fujiko ordered in an unusually harsh tone. Both men froze on the spot. "This isn't your concern." She stood up and went to the porch that led out the back. "The guards can handle it. Instead of running off into the night like fools, go and get Icoriso and Rodrigo. We haven't had a useful proposition in the Assembly yet. Tell them to gather the people, talk to them and keep their ears open. I want a Clan Proposition to vote on this year. With the council in disarray, it's even more important than ever to make the voices of the people heard." Genma and Ryu first looked at their mistress and then at each other, perplexion written all over their faces. Her narrow brush with death had made Fujiko realize once more who she fought for. Not for herself. Not for honour and glory. She fought for the people of the Tokugawa and so that there would never again be a little girl like Chikage or herself. Children who would be denied their childhood out of violence and fear. The two ronin bowed and did as they were instructed. After they had left, Fujiko went back to looking out the veranda. The pale moonlight was reflecting on the surface of the small onsen out back. Her ears picked out the noises that traveled far at night. The shouts of the sentries and the rustling of their armour in a futile search. The assassin had escaped. "Come visit me again, Chikage," Fujiko whispered. "Preferably during the day and with your sword sheathed," she added with a smile. "I'd like to hear your answer. There's much we have to talk about, you and I. In another place, in another time, I would have liked for little Chikage-chan and little Fujiko-chan to have become friends. Maybe it can still happen with Kunoichi Chikage and Head Priestess Fujiko." |

Icorisu followed Genma inside the temple and bowed deeply both to show respect and to cover the sleep in his eyes as he had not slept in days worried about the inner arguments he had herd about inside the council from his friend the scribe "Milady you summoned me what is it you wish of me" |

"Rekindle the fire in the courtyard, Icorisu. Let every man, woman and child in Mikawa know that they can bring forth their ideas for the next season. There's not much time left to put something to a vote. Rodrigo will also be along shortly to help you in that task. Bring me a good proposition." Fujiko paused for a moment, then looked up. "One more thing. Get those rotting support beams repaired. Somebody could get hurt, if the wood broke away underneath them while they were up there." Icorisu blinked, looking up at the wooden beams where Chikage had sat not too long ago. "Why would anyone go up there?" he asked in puzzlement. "Just do it, Icorisu-san." |

Rufus walked into the temple and saw his silk made into curtains a let a samll smile showing that he was happy for what they have put his silk into good use. He then bowed at fujiko and started: ''Milady, a man named Icorisu told me I had to come here if i wanted to propose anything, well I have a proposition.'' he took a breath and said ''I think it would be wise to send some type of agent to the west to scout out hattori and yamana lands so we can be prepared for the future, as war with the hattori is inevitable and we would be able to see the Yamana's strength in numbers. That is all I have to say. THank you for your time'' Rufus bowed once more and silently left the temple towards the beuatiful snow covered Mikawa. |
