With a smile Fujiko handed Icorisu a set of clean white robes. She herself had already changed into similar garments. "Put these on and follow me." She turned her back and waited for him to change. Then she waded into the rippling stream. Should have done this in the summer, she thought for a moment as the cold water splashed around her bare ankles. Bracing herself for the experience, she selected a stone at the foot of the waterfall and sat down. The water fell hard on her shoulders, but the priestess arched her back and sat up straight. She then looked at her apprentice, beckoning him to follow suit. Icorisu swallowed hard, but did as he was instructed. "Clear your mind of all earthly thoughts. Join me in meditation and let the fresh water cleanse your body." The exercise lasted for an hour. He endured valiantly, but Fujiko decided it was enough when his lips started to turn blue. Calmly she stood up and walked over to the previously prepared fire. Darkness was slowly falling over the land, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the shivering man sat down across the fire from her. "Now that the cleansing ritual is over," she began, "comes the true test of faith. You see, when an apprentice passes into priesthood, he must select a kami to ask for their blessing. That god will then guide you for the rest of your life. You may pray to them and other kami to come to your aid. If the kami chooses to respond, it can be in a way that ordinary people percieve as miracle." "So it's sort of like a guardian?" he asked. Fujiko nodded. "But be warned. We do not ask the gods to intervene in the earthly realm lightly. They might not choose to do so for reasons beyond our comprehension. They might even punish us, if they feel we try to abuse that connection. Now you must decide which of the kami to ask for aid. You will do so by answering a set of questions." "Do you have a kami as well?" he asked. "Of course. When my master made me a miko, I underwent the same ritual. My master's patron was Jurōjin, the god of wisdom. Mine is Benzaiten, the goddess of art and music. I've since learned to communicate with other gods and spirits as well. But that particualr skill takes time and patience to master. You should stick to your patron for now. I already have a fair idea of who that might be, based on your history. But we must observe the proper path to do this. Now, answer me the following questions. Answer them honestly and based on the first thing that comes to your mind:" 1. What is man's greatest virtue? 2. What is man's greatest vice? 3. What is more important? To be loved or to have wealth? 4. If honour compelled you to kill a family member, would you do it? 5. What is better? To lead an exciting, short life or a tranquil, long one? 6. Which is more precious? The land or the sea? 7. What governs the sky? The sun or the moon? 8. If you could bring the dead back to life, would you do it? 9. What is more important? To have wisdom or to be able to appreciate beauty in the world? 10. Would you rather be the strongest or have many allies? 11. What is the path to enlightenment? |

the man greatest virtue is bravery his greatest vice cowardice to be loved takes all precedence Only if he had done something traitors of worse a short life full of exitment is important the land is the most important for we can live not under water the sun governs the sky as it gives us the gift of heat and vision I would never bring back the dead they died the way the gods wished weather honorably in battle of peacefully in sleep to appericate beuty is something all should do especially those who see the horrors of war to have allies is a good thing but being able to stand firm is also important I would look for a middle ground the path to enlightenment is to protect those who cannot defend themselves and doing the honor of your patron god |

Fujiko contemplated those answers for a moment, the fire crackling between the two of them. Night had now completely fallen over them. "I see," she said finally. "My guess was correct then. Bishamonten, the god of warriors, should be your patron. As sword instructor in Sagami you have already served him well." "None of the questions had a right or wrong answer. They were a test of character, except for the very last one. I did not expect you to answer correctly. Listen well and remember this lesson. The path to enlightenment is the threefold and the eightfold. Through Wisdom: Right View and Right Intention. Through Ethical Conduct: Right Speech, Right Action and Right Livelihood. Through Mental Discipline: Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration." Fujiko took out a brush and wrote a prayer to Bishamonten along with Icorisu's answers on a wooden slate. Then she handed it over to Icorisu. "Toss it in the fire and ask for your patron's blessing in silence now." Icorisu did as instructed and closed his eyes in prayer. Fujiko, however, stared intently into the fire as it consumed the wood and sent the fresh ink sizzling. After the whole slate had been charred black, a smile crossed her face. "Icorisu Nobunaga of Sagami, your offering has been accepted. You are now a priest of Bishamonten." Icorisu looked up and smiled, a smile Fujiko returned gently. Then she sneezed. "Now, let's get out of these wet clothes and back to the temple," she said with a sniff, "before we catch our deaths out here." |

AS they returned to the temple Icorisu walks up to Fujiko-sama with a troubled look on his face "milady I saw this odd look on the kensei face at the tea ceremony I believe he is plotting to assassinate the daimyo or trying to find a way to concer the clan the in the uesgi name I know "I sound mad but I have seen the grin he gave you and the grin he hid in a glass of tea four times before." "Once when I was Saito a man gave that look to the daimyo and the next day he was daimyo and the former had been killed in the night, the second on the battle field at the start of the fight I was looking at my command and a man looked at me that way then during my battle with Hirotada-dono he tried to kill me but Hirotada-dono saved me, third was at the Sagami sword school when I had started teaching at student gave that look to an other student thankfully I had him followed and detained just before he put a death adder snake in the others bed and finnaly was the look that was given a man named Rodrigo by the former Shinobi elder and I saw him go for his sai right before you stepped in and I am worried that he is plotting to kill us all and start with you me and the other officers and advisors" with that he stood waiting for a reply |

Yusei had heard of the messanger requesting entrance into the hall. It was late as it was, so Yusei saved his talk for the morning and left. He had plans to visit Icorisu Nobunaga, which led his path towards Fujiko at the Temple. As he walked up the stairs, one of Fujiko's Ronin, said that Icorisu and Fujiko were returning from important matters. He decided to sit and plan out his conservation with Icorisu, he had done the one thing that Yusei expected, become suspicious of him. For his ultimate plan to work, he must convince Icorisu and get him off his back as to not ruin his plan early. |

Yusei gets out of his strategic mindset and looks up at Icorisu, getting up and bowing to the man. "Icorisu, we meet again. I was wondering why you had acted a bit hostile, and inquisitive at the Tea Ceremony. If it is because of my Uesugi background, then let us say that I've tied up my loose ends. The Uesugi are dead and will remain dead. In fact I lost my eye cutting off those strings of hoepelessness. Now I ask why are you so suspicious of me." |

"I am suspicious because of that grin I say you hide in your tea, I am suspicious because you have so often made yourself seem arrogant and above all others, I am Suspicious because you are even coming to see me, and finnaly because as a priest of Bishamonten and you seem to be a man of an honor to himself only" Icorisu yelled "And I demand you to tell me on your honor as a samurai a Tokugawa an officer and on the honor of the gods themselves tell me what you are up to NOW!" with that Icorisu stood and waited preparing to defend himself if necessarily |

Yusei smirked at Icorisu, the man was clearly as Yusei had analyzed. "Icorisu, your hostility is unnecessary. I am loyal to the Daimyo and Tokugawa as fervently as you are. You see, I like to analyze new people, my grin was of how I analyzed you. You are interesting Icorisu, although you seem a bit self rigtheous. One day your beliefs will be the end of you. Simple as that. My plans are of none of your concern as of this moment. If you believe I am planning anything against the Daimyo you can forget it. I am simply here to try and get on more friendly terms with each other." |

Icorisu was taken aback by the friendly tone given but not fooled behind a mask of kindness he thought "this man is about how I thought he thinks he can fool me but he won't but I will go with it" "I am Sorry milord but I have been informed by old coliges that you seem to enjoy annoying Fujiko-sama and also I believe that my Jealous that you were given Kensei rather then I got the better of me but I would like to know honestly is their anything I should know for the good of the clan is there anything I need to fear from you or the clan need fear from you on your honor their is no plot against the clan as I like you have seen a clan destroyed that I once belonged to, you have perhaps heard of the Saito," "From one dead clan member to another is their any worry for anyone in this clan? |

Yusei had not expected Icorisu to take his friendly offer, it was simply a test of how well Yusei had analyzed him. Of course Yusei smiled again, a dumb one, kind of like the one at the Tea Ceremony. "Icorisu, the only thing this clan needs to worry about is the lack of faith in the officers. I was chosen for a reason, because the Daimyo believes I am truly an asset. I take great respect for Fujiko-Sama as an officer. On more friendlier terms we don't seem to see eye to eye. The information you hear is biased on the side of saying I enjoy annoying Fujiko. In fact I despise arguing with her. It prevents work and that stops me and her from doing our job. I ask you try and restrain your personal feelings from opinions of officers." "Icorisu, if there is one thing that I can say that is wholeheartedly true is that I seek to unify this land. Unify it under the Daimyo. How I do this is my decision, and asking questions about it will only get in the way. Just know that I value your activity in getting the people of the Tokugawa involved as Fujiko does." |

"Then you would not mind a friendly duel just a just a quick bout to learn how he both fight we might be able to teach each other a few things" Then he noticed his grin and dropped him friendly act "But first why are you grinning this time I am tired of it and I will have my answers tell me why you grin and why you really came for I am certain that is is not to become on friendly terms you are hear to see if I am the fool which I'm not or to see the easiest way to kill me which is very difficult our own daimyo was hard pressed |

Yusei shook his head,"Icorisu, I have no intentions of killing you. If you want to know why I am here exactly, then I will tell you. I am here to test if you are the man I believe you are. So far you have surpassed expectations. Just know that I do not wish to kill you. Icorisu, Priest of Bishamonten, exactly how do you envision the rise of the Tokugawa to the Shogunate?" |

Fujiko had been standing in a shadowy corner while the two man had spoken with one another. "Very enlightening," she said as Icorisu passed by her and almost gave him a heart attack in the process. "You heard everything?" Fujiko nodded. "I was about to tell you that you were just paranoid, before Genma fetched you, but now I'm not so sure. Recent developments in the council about the Tatami Master are very suspicious. The Kensei is trying to play you, alienate you from me and use you for his own purposes. But there's more to it. He's not capable of crafting a scheme like that on his own. His own ego stands in the way of that. He thinks he's the best thing that happened to the clan since the invention of terrace farming." Fujiko looked Icorisu straight in the eyes. "Something is rotten in the land of the rising sun. And I want to know what, who's in on it and what their ultimate goal is. You want to know your responsibilities as advisor? The normal should be obvious. Pray to the gods, give people spiritual aid and take down their suggestions for the Clan Assembly. Keep the day-to-day business at the temple running. But far more importantly, I want you to investigate your suspicions. But keep it discrete. Don't confront any officer unless you first bring your findings to me. Our best ally is the Shinobi Elder right now. She's new to the council and thus unlikely to be involved in any ongoing plots. I also trust her personally. The daimyo has a new head of security, but I haven't met him yet, only felt his presence at the tea ceremony. Talk to him. Maybe he'll want to launch an investigation. I'm too much in the open to do anything without proof, but you can move around more freely. I need you to get to the bottom of whatever it is that's going on here." |
