Characters begin at a certain level with a certain amount of experience, as they gain experience they will 'level up' at certain amounts, increasing in power as they do. In the case of this forum, this power isn't felt in dice rolls or numbers running through a computer system, but rather represents the capabilities of your character, a guideline for what they can do in the RPing enviornment. Obviously, having your character consistently act stronger then their level indicates is a bad thing, but having a slight (slight mind you, don't overdo it) burst of power for a heroic moment is ok. Characters also have skills. Skills are obtained or increased by using skill points, which are gained by leveling up. While level indicates a general guideline for how powerful a character is, the skills indicate what exactly they can do. For example, a level 7 Ashi'Ki Rat mage may have the following skills: Combat (rank 5) Rat Summoning (rank 3) Razortooth Rat Summoning (rank 1) This Rat Mage is somewhat skilled in combat, can summon rats to his or her aid, and has a very limited ability to summon Razortooth Rats. Having this character use skills they don't have, or having them demonstrate great abilities in a skill they have a low ranking in, would be unacceptable as it would stray outside the boundaries of how the character has been developed. However, if the character's skills looked more like this... Combat (rank 1) Rat Summoning (rank 4) Razortooth Rat Summoning (Rank 4) Then this character would need to be RP'd differently. He/she would be a weak combat opponent, but wouldn't likely be found without summons at his/her side. Now, on to specifics. Experience is gained through RPing, with good RPing earning more experience then bad RPing (but don't worry if your a new writer, you can make up for it by RPing often and getting in some good practice). Once they level up, characters recieve one skill point per level for levels 1-5, two skill points per level for levels 6-10, and three skill points per level for levels 11-15, adding up to a grand total of 30 skill points. New skills can be learned once the requirements have been met, at the cost of one skill point, and existing skills can be ranked up for one skill point. A character cannot store skill points, they must be spent as they are earned. Here is the list of how much total experience it takes to reach each level: 1 - 0 2 - 30 3 - 90 4 - 190 5 - 340 6 - 550 7 - 830 8 - 1190 9 - 1640 10 - 2190 11 - 2850 12 - 3630 13 - 4540 14 - 5590 15 - 6890 In addition to normal experience gain, there are other ways to start with, or obtain bonus experience. Some character classes start at a certain level above 1, These characters are considered to have gained each level up to the one they are at, and are rewarded the skill points upon creation, but they must be spent immediately. Also, some character classes may have "accelerated" or "slowed" experience gain, this means they have a multiplier that is used to alter their experience before it is awarded. Here are the modifiers (arranged by the levels they apply to) to incoming experience for accelerated characters: 1-3 = 150% 4-6 = 125% 7-10 = 110% 11-14 = 105% And here are the modifiers for slowed characters: 1-3 = 100% 4-6 = 95% 7-10 = 90% 11-14 = 75% While characters with normal experience gain have 100% experience gain for all levels. |
