Name: Dwarves (singular: Dwarf)

Physical: Dwarves vary around four feet tall, a very short dwarf being 3’8” while a very tall dwarf being 4’4”, but despite their small stature are quite sturdy, durable, and muscular to boot, making them just as good in combat as other, taller races (in fact, most Dwarves will argue that being shorter they are subsequently more difficult to hit, and thus vastly superior to other races in combat). Being the stout race they are, Dwarves are resistant to physical damage from concussive sources, but their figure also makes them less agile (but as any good Dwarf knows, dodging does not defeat an opponent). Female Dwarves tend to be a bit leaner, but this is not considered to make them any less resilient then a male Dwarf, and any male Dwarf that disagrees will receive a good thumping for his wrong opinions.

Dwarven faces have large noses and cheekbones with rough features, and set-in but bright eyes that can be grey, blue, brown, or bronze, while skin colors have different shades of tan. Dwarven features tend to be smoother and more chiseled on female Dwarves, but on male Dwarves they are hidden by bushy eyebrows and large beards. A Dwarf’s beard is his pride, it never stops growing, reaching the stomach in young Dwarves and the ground in older ones. A long beard is a sign of wisdom, personal health to Dwarves, and longer beards also being more attractive to female Dwarves. Aside from their beards, which can have a variety of textures from smooth and flowing to frazzled, male Dwarves have rough hair that reaches their shoulders, with older Dwarves often gaining bald spots of various sizes. Female Dwarves have much longer head hair, which can grow all the way down to their feet in older women. Hair colors vary from blonde through brown, red, and black, although Dwarves usually have hair colors in-between these. Maturing physically and mentally at age thirty, most Dwarves will live to see three hundred fifty to four hundred years, although the oldest Dwarf to have lived was believed to be over five hundred before he died.

Mental: Dwarves are stubborn, competitive, and honorable, but most importantly they hold grudges for a very long time. Dwarves value oaths and personal honor very highly, and will often never give up a grudge until they have evened the score. Dwarves have even been known to give up their craft and family ties so that they may actively work towards nothing else but fulfilling an oath or evening a grudge, only returning once they have succeeded. Beyond this, Dwarves are often set in their ways and often stubbornly refuse to change, especially if pushed to do so from an outside source, though in recent times more liberal Dwarves have been cropping up. Nevertheless they are good at defending their way of life, and their loathe of giving up ground, even when the fight is hopeless, to an opponent reflects in their immovable nature. Dwarves prefer things to last, and thus Dwarven works are built to do so. In a Dwarf’s mind, if a tool, weapon, structure, or the like cannot last under use for at least three generations, then it is considered quite unreliable indeed. This tendancy, however, means Dwarves will often allow a problem to get worse while they make a long term solution, instead of making a short-term patch to hold off the problem while a better solution is worked on. However, many younger, technology-minded Dwarves, who must deal with machinery constantly being unstable, have decided that something should only be expected to last once finished, and such machines can be considered still in a lengthly process of testing (unfortunately, they use this reasoning as an excuse to push unfinished ideas into field conditions, where they sometimes fail spectacularly).

Dwarves constantly seek to distinguish themselves in their trade, and always wish to make something that will be remembered and respected by the generations to come, meaning that a Dwarf will constantly seek to better his own skills, and are often competitive with others in the same trade. They commonly measure wealth by possession of material goods, but more importantly by their life achievements, although most Dwarves who have made impressive achievements will subsequently gain the impressive hoard of material goods they deserve for their hard work. Aside from being the best, something else that all Dwarves love is beer and ale. They can drink it by the gallon with little effect, and laugh at races that cannot hold their alcohol.
