So Highwind made an exaltation, T_A made a different exaltation, Eisenritter made some edits to it, and they both got into book 3 despite stepping on each other's toes. Then it all went to shit and I started from square 1.

Updated asset names curtesy of some guy on /tg/

Updated Avatar to require spending drops on anything drops can be spent on, rather than taxing one drop per round as the wellspring. hopefully encourage players to do cool shit, rather than taking effort to just be exalted.

possible sixth asset to involve reaction actions to give a last-minute power expenditure? also considering making avatar drop at EoT rather than start, but that would require at least one drop every other turn instead of every turn. too lenient to make it a point?

also considering shaving those background dots back off in the name of not having power creep. loss of transformation trinkets will cause riots though, I know.

Made super mode slightly less super.

Made exemplary hero slightly more super, with no super mode benefit.

Removed background dots as general nerf. Would like to include transformation trinket as an asset, need to contemplate more than just that to warrant a feat.

Fonts kinda remind me of Exigent Exalted. A god needs a champion, so they get one tailored to their style.

Anyway, a background dependent Font could be cool. They get free dots, but the downside is that they rely on their background item to change into Avatar form. Something like that might warrant a feat. Be sure to note that only the Font can use their Font item, because the item can still choose who uses it.

That would be especially interesting with non-item backgrounds, like a witch who needs her Ally cat to transform or a magical pop idol whose adoring fans give her strength

So in the midst of thinking about the Background-based level progression for the Remodeler, I was thinking hey maybe there's a way to fix the Font background dots in there.

What if the Background was their Power Stat?

That way, you don't get a Level 1 character rocking a 5 star artifact or leading an entire Faction, but you can still have the background play a major role as the source of their power and have it grow with them, whether you're learning how to use the full potential of your magic crystal, rising through the ranks of the Sailor Scouts, or your mentor just getting more and more serious as you learn. It's a simple way to preserve the fluff concept of "A power greater than themselves" without being totally broken

Isn't being able to start with five dots in a background already a thing? You can only put up to 3 from your starting dots, sure, but then they give you 600ish XP to spend on various bits - one of which is buying background dots for 50xp/dot, double if above 3. So you could have two Backgrounds at five dots right out of the gate, with a third one at 4, if you didn't mind being King of the Hobos. It's not like somewhat useless people haven't gotten into positions of power before because of nepotism or just blind luck.

I dunno if it would get worse with the Font - I haven't seen the old version, I don't think - but you can already be a level 1 Vampire walking out the gate with a five-star artifact, 10 000-man army and kilometer-long Spelljammer.

The issue is getting background dots for free, not having high level artifacts or whatever at level 1. paying for extra background dots is far removed from just having it handed to you.

The idea of tying the background to the resource stat is interesting, but something like scaling an artifact as you level would require a lot of explanation or restriction. some backgrounds might level better than others, but it sounds like a lot of baggage. Further, the idea of having a transformation trinket is nearly universal for the transforming hero archetype, but things like a mentor or cute animal companion or whatever else, seems like exactly what backgrounds as-is are meant to provide, and I don't know that they're necessary to be intrinsic to the exaltation.

If they were, previous versions would have seen fit to add them. Note that Highwind's Champion outright said that it gave you a trinket that was only counted as an artifact for the plot armor, unless you actually spent dots for the background. T_A's Wellspring just said "external source of power" and left it for the player to decide what that meant.
