Zoat

Posted Image

Zoats are a tauric race hailing from an isolated crystal sphere. While a fairly old race, younger that the races uplifted by the syrne but much older than humans, the zoats spent much of their history isolated from the rest of the wheel.

The Zoat's home sphere contained a large solar system, with three habitable planets. This combined with a traditionally naturalistic culture lead them to be late bloomers in breaking through their crystal sphere. When they finally did break out of their home sphere, the distance to the nearest sphere to theirs and the timing of the human's arrival left their own relatively overshadowed.

While less advanced in technology than even races younger than them, the Zoat have an extensive knowledge in the natural arts, especially medicine. Zoats have put their feet in the door in the apothecary business, and easy feat when you have four of them.

Zoats have a full body AP of 2 that doesn't stack because of their tough skin, but lower body armor is one step higher in rarity do to the need of it being custom made outside of the Zoats' home Crystal Sphere.

Physical Qualities

A head shorter than a typical Aasimer and far more bulky due to their tauric forms, Zoats tend to feel cramped in spaces made by most races. After all, most races don’t have to build their spaces to accommodate four legs. Most.

While their scales might pull the image that they’re reptiles, but in truth Zoats are more along the lines of mammal-like reptiles. They lay eggs, but are warm blooded.

Zoat clothing is strictly utilitarian. When a Zoat isn’t in a line of work that requires armor, they often just wear slings and belts to hold pouches and tools.

Playing a Zoat

While a fairly old race, they’ve only recently blipped on the scene due to their slow way of life. For a Zoat they aren’t moving slow, everyone else is just moving way too fast! This slow and steady outlook isn’t just because of their bulky forms, but also the environment the race sprung from. The Zoat’s home planet is thick, even in their modern age, with swamp land. One wrong step when you’re heavy as a Zoat, and you sink or find a venomous animal gnawing on your leg. Even with caution, those situations still happen, and when venom enters your body it’s best to not let your heart race.

When Zoats interact with other races, a lot is lost in translation. In the Zoat’s native language emotion is put into word rather than expression. A Zoat who loses their cool is considered too feral, as raging emotions are associated with the luddites in their society. Because of this Zoats feel off put when dealing with the more highly expressive races of the Wheel, and in turn many take Zoats to be phlegmatic even why they assure that they’re feeling upbeat and happy.

Out of all the races they’ve met in the Wheel, Zoats have gotten along the best with Squats. Both have pragmatic and slow outlooks on life, and some feel like they share a destiny.

Zoat Heroes
For most of his life Wrex lived simply, his quiet swamp home offering all he could ever need to live. In fact, he could have been content to live like this until the end of his days if a Halfling Rogue trader didn't annex his land. Forced to leave his home, Wrex now looks for ways to be a thorn in the halfling's side, a task made easier by the awakening of innate warp powers obtained from his years of meditative life and sudden surge of anger.

Life is always interesting for Gus, who finds himself as the "bodyguard" to a powerful Youma lord who runs rampant around the Wheel. For some the task of playing baby sitter to an eldritch being would be impossible, but thanks to the singing stone in his tale he has the power to see the end of each day.

Tyran's expertise has always been in biology, and no organism has been more intriguing to her than that of the Kythons with their ever changing forms. With his constant exposure to the weirder subspecies of the race it was inevitable that she'd fall pray to one that got through safety procedures. What wasn't expected was the Kython forming a Symbiotic relationship, making Tyran into both more and less than what she used to be.

Zoat Racial Traits

Steadfast Steed [Zoat, Paragon]- Your back is unbreakable, and you can take any fall. You can carry size four individuals even if they’re wearing up to extreme armor, and gain a free raise equal to athletics to reducing falling damage and for making jumps.

Apothecary Traditions [Zoat]- You always seem to have the right salve or potion for the job, and can add your level to the final roll you make for medical checks. In addition, whenever you use the feat Divine Ministration you roll twice on your 1d5 check and pick the best result.

The Roar- Zoats are normally calm and collected, which makes it all the more jarring when they get loud. Once per scene you may unleash a bellowing roar that stuns all enemies in a radius equal to their Charisma x Level in meters. The stun can be resisted by a willpower save that has a TN of 15.

Luddite [Zoat]- Even among other Zoats, you’re a fanatic for the natural ways. So much so that technology makes you just plain MAD. You gain a rank in the Clock Stopper Sword School, and may advance it as if it was always in your class list. When fighting against enemies using weapons that incorporate technology (chain weapons, power field weapons, others to SM discretion), your weapon gains powerfield. If you willingly make use of modern technology yourself (being on a Spelljammer doesn't count, manning one of the systems does) you lose the benefits of this feat (including the spell school) and roll for a degeneration. After 24 hours you regain the benefits of the feat, but the degeneration lasts a week.

Was expecting goat references

This is a pretty unique spin on centaurs, although I feel as if it's treading on Sphinxes and Minotaurs.

Steadfast Steed should give a raise to Acrobatics when falling.

Apothecary Traditions can start you with the Healing School. If you're against giving them a Magic School, perhaps you can do something else that helps them when they heal.

You could give them the Divine Ministrations feat for a healing thing.

Actually filled out more on the race, but it's still a heavy WIP, especially the Luddite feat.

This seems... more like an exaltation or racial paragon asset than a racial feat? You might want to just have it allow them access to the Clock Stopper Sword School as though it is in their class list rather than giving them a free rank in it and allow access. I like the weapon-gaining-Power-Field-against-technological-weaponry mechanic; I wonder if that could be incorporated into the sword school itself?

Bumping for interest. You guys want centaurs? This is probably the best option that isn't obviously centaurs.

They're interesting but their racial power is a bit too long and complex.

Let's break down Quads:
-Zoats have the Quadroped trait,
-but at x1.5 rounded down instead of x2 because of their bulky build.
-In addition, they can let a humanoid of size 4 ride them
-as long as the other person isn't wearing armor heavier than medium,
-and can allow any person size 3 and lower ride them with any armor.
-Zoats have a full body AP of 2 that doesn't stack because of their tough skin,
-but lower body armor is one step higher in rarity do to the need of it being custom made outside of the Zoats' home Crystal Sphere.

Yeah, that's quite a lot to keep track of. You can just cut it down to "Double Strength for Speed, other Races can ride you if their Size doesn't exceed your own, and Natural Armor 2" and it would be fine.

Seems fair enough. Now they just need Feats and a grammar cleanup.
