For making a compromise between your fluff sources, you can say that the Youma are indescribably nasty beings that spawned from various primal fears of the collective unconscious. Instead of pledging allegiance to a God and becoming a daemon prince, Youma will switch places with mortals and cast the original into the Warp. Think like Changeling: The Lost, only the Fair Folk replaces the mortal instead of a fetch.

You might tone down the references to apes in your fluff. Only a handful of the races are apelike, and the rest are 'other'.

People that get screwed over by Youma exalts this way might turn into the Youma race, should they survive the trip to the Umbra.

We really need to figure out the naming deal.

I think there's something to be mined from WH40K's Chaos Spawn. The concept of an individual having gone through the dizzying array of mutations without going bugfuck insane sounds like a workable concept to me.

Those Chaos Spawn look nasty, but that's a given.

You know, one could turn this whole Exalt on its head and make it about the Changelings. Getting catapulted into the Warp and coming back mostly sane takes some special stuff, after all.

...Okay, in retrospect, might have been a bit too enthusiastic about that peek into how Eldrazi non-minds work yesterday. With that said, here is The Plan:

These are the Raksha, plain and simple. Will get to the rewrite later, but suffice to say this one will be turning from the hunger theme I got caught on yesterday to one more suited to a conniving, underhanded Fae asshole.

Other possible influences may include Changeling, the various TFEI terminals in Haruhi Suzumiya (more specifically, Kuyo Suoh), and Magic's own Oona. At the moment.

My only simple question: What's the difference between this and the race Youma?

Exalted Youma are the kind of Fair Folk that are comparable to Daemons. Never have been mortal, and never plan to be.

The Youma Race originally were tentacle monsters. The second draft changed them into a fairy/mutant race that live in the deep umbra.

What's the difference between an elf pretending to be a different elf, and a sentient blob of Warp pretending to be one?

The fact that, for the blob, it's inherent to it being a blob whereas the elf has an ability independent of its race letting it pretend to be a different elf.

In other words, anything can be Exalt!Youma - only Race!Youma can be Race!Youma. ...Shenanigans aside.

Heavens no, that was literal. This "exaltation" is in fact the inverse of one: A being of great and terrible power pretending to be a mortal.

And, mind you, somewhat bad at it.

That being said, currently thumbing through Changeling for more ideas. So far, given the difference in scale (and at least partly because it might be funny to run a changeling alongside his deposed ex-keeper), I think I'll be sticking to Raksha for the structure. The Heart Grace is the core of one's existence, and from it one draws Glamour, the power of the Fae to shape that existence.

Assets, then, are the other four Graces: the Cup, representing desirability and the appearance of sanity (correlates to Exalted's virtue of Compassion); the Ring, representing self-awareness and self-mastery (Temperance); the Staff, representing a mastery of the social milieu (Conviction); and the Sword, representing dominance and the advancement of the self (Valor). We will be able to take two of these assets, which will have different benefits depending on whether they are taken as the primary or secondary Grace.

Or that's the plan, anyway. :(

EDIT: And switched those in for a bit.
