Viroid Despite the fact that it is well hidden, the species of the Materium have reams of knowledge about the Warp. The mechanisms it works by are understandable. However, some things are truly unknowable, cannot be understood - should not exist. It has been said that some theories only work in a universe with eleven dimensions. It is possible that some... things... have leaked through from a neighbouring universe in which those theories work. However, this doesn't explain the way some of those things seem to be able to pull matter apart, change its properties on a fundamental level and reassemble it. It also doesn't explain the way some of them attach themselves to sophonts, acting only under their will. And it certainly doesn't explain how those sophonts then Exalt. This, then, is the origin of the Viroid - something that should not exist attaches itself to a hapless mortal, elevating them into Exalted society. They are commonly mistaken for Daemons or other warp-beings by the uninitiated - which, in practise, means almost everyone. The few who have been chosen are hence rather insular, treating those outside their circle with a certain measure of suspicion and trepidation - after all, those outside the circle are likely to persecute them in turn. While the Atlantean has the soul of an ancient Syrne being, a Daemonhost has their soul fused with a Daemon and a Symbiote houses a parasite within their body, the Viroid has an entirely different connection to the entity that grants them their powers. They refer to them as "Passengers", and there is evidence that they are not entirely under their owners' control - sometimes, they malfunction or glitch in some way, changing their owner rather than their owner's target. ![]() Powers Corruption - Your new-found ability to alter the very fabric of reality does not come without a downside. Spending Cores and carrying out certain other actions grants Corruption. Whenever you spend a Core, you gain 1 Corruption. You can lose Corruption by refraining from carrying out reality-warping actions - every hour you go without gaining Corruption, you lose a point of Corruption. Glitch - As your Corruption rises, there is an increasing chance that you will suffer a critical glitch - erasing you from the universe yourself. Every time you gain Corruption, make an Encryption check, using your Corruption as the TN. Failure causes a Glitch - lose a dot from a random characteristic. This change is permanent, but the characteristic may be rebought as normal. If you fail this check by more than 25, your character goes through several interesting and disturbing geometric shapes before winking out, never to be seen again. Data Break - You can see the numbers that make everything, taste the violence that they embody. You gain a dot in Academic Lore and Forbidden Lore which cannot take you above 5 dots. Cursed Wave - Your Passenger attracts the attention of the universe's inbuilt anti-virus software, so-to-speak. TNs for Focus Power tests you make are raised by 5. Power Stat: Encryption The fundamental properties of a Viroid - the things that make that person the person they are - are altered through their being in contact with their Passenger. As the Viroid uses their powers, their baseline statistics bear less and less resemblence to the person they once were, and their physiology and anatomy alter to reflect this change. Alien geometries, disconnected body parts and "plates" of negative space are common. Resource Stat: Cores The character can hold a maximum number of Cores equal to three times their Encryption.
![]() The Viroid - Something From Beyond Viroid Physical Features The Viroid is marked for good by their contact with their Passenger - their hair or eyes may change colour, they may acquire tattoos or have them change shape and their skin colour may change slightly. However, as their Encryption rises, their body changes shape. It generally begins with plates of negative space, before progressing to alien geometries and finally ending in complete disconnection of the body's various parts, although they may no longer be recognisable as such. It is this drastic alteration that leads to accusations of Daemonhood. Viroid Tells As the Viroid uses their abilities, their Passenger manifests itself, usually as a piece of clothing or an alteration to the body's anatomy. As they spend more Cores and their Corruption rises, they also begin to manifest tendrils of negative space stretching between them and their targets. Finally, if they really throw caution to the wind and go all-out, the landscape around them begins to flicker and warp, and optical illusions resembling boxes with strange glyphs on them manifest. Becoming a Viroid Joining the ranks of the Viroids is an incredibly risky business. You have to find an anomaly and have it, through whatever inscrutible selection process it uses, decide that it likes you. It will then bind itself to you, permanently changing your body and granting you power over the very fabric of reality. The worst that can happen when encountering a prospective Passenger is not that you simply wink out of existence (although that is certainly a risk). No, it's that your very being is taken to pieces, tweaked so that, say, your skin is inside out and your eyes can only see ultraviolet, and then reassembled. All while you remain conscious, and in incredible pain. Playing a Viroid Being able to change reality with a simple focussing of abstract ability can be hard at times. Viroid culture is insular, as they don't trust the outside world and it doesn't trust them. Add to this the alteration of bodily form, and many Viroids end up going insane. A few have turned homicidal, indiscriminately Draining the world around them and breaking themselves in the process. Others have gone suicidal, throwing themselves into worse and worse situations, only to find their Passenger keeping them alive time after time. All Viroids have an instinctive understanding of the way the world works, and that if you tweak X juuuust right, Y will happen. This generally translates to them taking apparently insane risks and having them turn out perfectly. However, it sometimes works out that they instead just... fail to be where they were until just before the blade or shot hits them. Ryu Book Assets Ryu Book of Portals - You have an instinctive understanding of distance and time. You can ignore negative terrain penalties, and halve penalties for long and extreme range shots. Ryu Book of Chaos - You have an instinctive understanding of combat. You gain a +5 bonus to initiative rolls. Ryu Book of People - You have an instinctive understanding of social interactions. You gain a free raise to all social interactions. Ryu Book of Monsters - You have an instinctive understanding of your foes. You gain a free raise to all tests to hit, and all attacks you make deal +1 damage. Ryu Book of Symbols - You have an instinctive understanding of magic. You gain a +10 bonus to all Focus Power tests you make. |

At knee-jerk, Data Break should probably go ahead and break the cap and/or give relevant specialties, and Gate Hacking needs to have either Level or a Characteristic in the test...

Saying this Exalt needs work would be an understatement. I've never played .hack, so forgive me if I miss a reference. First off, the fluff. In a nutshell, you become fused to a powerful being and become one. That's a popular one around these parts. Nothing to really say here if it's just an adaption of something from .hack. Now, onto powers. Corruption is a counterpart to Paradox/Resonance. Okay so far. Not really a power, mind you. It could be merged with Glitch. Glitch means whenever you spend a Core, you roll your Power Stat. Failing the TN causes you to lose a random characteristic. Screwing the TN too hard kills you entirely. That's... pretty bad. You might as well be playing a mortal, because I see no reason to spend resource when you risk this shit happening to you. Can't you just simulate 'reality glitches' with Warp Phenomena? Data Break is incredibly underwhelming. Cursed Wave is another penalty for being an Exalt with a massive penalty attached to it. As it is, your Static Powers are more like Static Drawbacks. No real attraction factor to wanting to be a Viroid. Now onto Powers Gained. I do like how you managed to do the dots thing for Encryption on the chart. Looks very nice. I don't get Data Drain. Does that mean you gain the stolen characteristic? Either way, I don't think its worth the Corruption you gain. Gate Hacking grants some spells you roll with your Power Stat... plus your Power Stat? You know there's a dozen things you could use instead, right? Debug gives you a static bonus equal to your Encryption to Glitch checks, and speeds up Corruption cleansing. It's an okay power. Data Bug is a HUGE capbreaker. It can let you roll 12k0 on a skill test, which makes the roll become 10k1. If you're going to do a cap breaker, I suggest doing it at Power Stat 2, and making it only Characteristics. Epitaph of Twilight is also extremely underwhelming for a Power Stat 5 power. Don't Vampires start with this? Now for the assets. As a minor complaint, you should remove the 'Ryu' from the start of each asset name. It gets redundant. Book of Portals is reasonable. Book of Chaos doesn't really make sense to me. Wouldn't an instinctive understanding of combat make you better at combat? Perhaps give them a Sword School or Gun Kata instead? Book of People giving a free raise to social anything seems a little excessive. Perhaps you can spend a Core to gain +2k1 on a social test? Book of Monsters does what Book of Chaos probably should. Free raise to hit and +1 damage are a little... I don't know, weird? Just give them extra damage equal to their Power Stat or something, I don't know. Book of Symbols is basically a free raise to magic, since it cancels out your penalty. I'd give them a Magic School instead. |

Yes, this is pretty much pure .hack// right now, and very strictly IMOQ at that (Legend didn't have as much risk to Shugo, and G.U. did something entirely different than the usual Twilight Bracelet bit). I would suggest looking at Haruhi's TFEI terminals and the Data Overmind, which also manipulate data.

I was going to suggest that he take some inspiration from Demon: The Descent. It's got that weird 'techgnostic' thing going on that could work for this.
