Clown - A class-line for humorous circus performers, rather than death-defying ones. Overview ![]() Class Progression ![]() Feats Bhang-Sloshi Initiate - You have been initiated into Bhang-Sloshi, the martial art of clowning. Gain a free rank in a Sword School. Bhang-Sloshi Master - You are a master of the terrifying martial art of clowning. Gain a free rank in a Sword School or Gun Kata. You may add a new restriction to your Trick Shots and Martial Maneuvers: "(-2): This attack may only be used with an improvised weapon." Clown Car Physics - One of the semi-mystical arts of clowning is the ability to fit at least twice as many people into a given vehicle as should be able to get in there. You do not take up passenger space on any vehicle you are occupying. If you are the driver, the vehicle can fit an extra passenger. Clown Face - A clown's face is their identity and act, all wrapped up in one easily trademarked package. When you take this feat, choose a made-up face and costume. While you are not wearing this make-up and costume, you gain a free raise on all Disguise checks, as you are already pretending to be someone other than yourself. However, while you are out of costume, you lose a dot each of Fame and Status. Clown-Space - Clown-space is like hammer-space, except you can only pull humorous props and parts of clown acts out of it. As a half action, you can reach out to acquire a random piece of clowning gear, such as a ladder, a bucket of whitewash, a custard pie or an extremely long balloon. Clown-Space can only be accessed while you are in costume. Improved Clown Face - You have become one with your clowning identity to the point that you are nearly unidentifiable without your make-up on. While you are not wearing your clowning make-up and costume, you gain the effects of the Unremarkable feat and may reroll any 1s on Disguise checks. While you are in costume, however, you gain the effects of the Hidden Objects feat. Perfected Routine - Clowning has become second nature to you, and your routine has become engrained in your muscle memory. Improvised weapons which are pieces of clowning gear (such as those pulled out of clown-space) deal +1k1 damage and gain +2 Pen in your hands. Pratfall - You can distract your opponent by falling over in a humorous manner. As part of a Dodge action, you can fall prone and gain a free raise on that action. Obviously, this only works if you were standing beforehand. ![]() My first attempt at writing a class. It was kind of difficult to know what to include, but I ended up going with a combination of fairly standard circus clowns combined with a tincture of characters like Jester from DMC3 and the erstwhile fellows of Ankh-Morpork's Guild of Fools. Changelog: 15/05/2016: I found out that there's no penalty in RAW for using improvised weapons. As a result, Bhang-Sloshi Initiate has been changed so it actually does something, and Bhang-Sloshi Master has been improved a bit. 15/05/2016: Bhang-Sloshi Master now allows use of improvised weapons for special attacks. 16/05/2016: Added a restriction to the use of Clown Space, and given Improved Clown Face a bonus while in-costume. All to give incentives for being in costume. 16/05/2016: Reverted Bhang-Sloshi Master. 20/05/2016: Changes to Peer, Proficiency and Pratfall. 25/02/2017: Tweaked Clown Car Physics to make it obvious exactly what it does when the driver has it. The "penalty" for using improvised weapons is that you can't use them with special attacks at all without using homebrew sword schools, of which there are currently four that allow for improvised weapons to be used in special attacks. Also, the weapon type used in a special attack is fixed as part of the attack. Bhang-Sloshi Master does literally nothing except give a school rank at half-cost. |

I don't really agree with that. Improvised weapons "count" as other weapons, usually Clubs. So if you use an improvised weapon, it would work for the weapon school the Improvised weapon is mimicking. Generally that is Iron Heart, but there could be others. Using some cutlery as a parrying weapon, for instance. The Homebrew Sword Schools work in the way that they let you use any improvised weaponry with them, regardless of what they are mimicking but then it MUST be an improvised weapon. So you'd be able to use the attack with both a Fork, Garbage Can, Garbage Can lid, Chair or a Ladder but not with an ordinary Sword. This Class would do well with the Hidden Objects feat from the Maid classline. I notice the Clown Face feats mean it is beneficial to never actually be in costume, since they only give benefits when you are out of your costume. Perhaps make them give some benefit for actually being in Clown Make-Up? Edited by Username, May 15 2016, 10:29 AM.

Evidently I'll need to think about exactly how improvised weapons work. The point of including the original restriction was to make it so that you could basically go "oh, I've got this feat that lets me pull improvised weapons out of thin air, now I want to make a special attack that incentivizes using them". I confess that I've not actually looked at the Maid classline. I realise that this will sound weird, given that DtD does at least partly run on Rule of Funny, but it seemed a bit TOO silly, somehow. Having just taken a look at Hidden Objects, though, I wholeheartedly agree. I'm thinking it's going to be more that people go "oh that silly clown, that looks so weird!" and chuckle at it, though. This also suggests a reason to be in Make-Up... Edited by Marr965, Feb 25 2017, 05:18 PM.

I'm sending my players to Space Station 13 now. Now we need a HONK Mother alignment. |

If there are multiple clowns in the same car, is there no limit to how many can fit in it? Is that the idea or an oversight? |

Oh hey, I can take Clowns off of the list of class tracks I was going to have to make now that someone else did it. Thanks, Marr. Now for some comments. I think Clowns should have Intimidation in their Skill list. Clowns can be scary as hell. Setting Suns should probably be removed from their Sword Schools. I don't know, I just don't think it works for this. The Pratfaller should probably get Peer (Circus) instead of Peer (Circus Performers). More broad that way. The Stooge should have Throwing proficiency, not Thrown. I would make Basic weapon proficiency optional. The Bang-Sloshi feats are extraneous when you have Extracurricular Study. I don't think the Clown should get them at all, really, when they aren't really a martial class. Isn't Perfected Routine like Weapon Specialization/Focus (Improvised)? You should probably use those instead. Pratfall should be reworded to "you can fall prone as a free action to gain a raise on your dodge test", or something like that. |

If Setting Sun is replaced, then Broken Home might be a good Sword School to replace it. That might be too beneficial though, since it is an Improvised Weapons Sword School. Extracurricular Study allows you to take Magic schools though, while Bhang-Sloshi initiate only covers Sword Schools. It also gives you a free ranked, not being restricted by level. The most XP saavy way would be to spend it on a level 4 or 5 Martial Rank in a school. Bhang-Sloshi Master on the other hand works with Gun Kata and Sword Schools, but still not magic so Extracurricular Study wouldn't work there either. Perfected Routine is a bit different from Weapon Specialization. With those you need to pick a specific type of weapon. So it wouldn't just be clown gear, it would be Pies or Ladders or Buckets or something and wouldn't get the bonus otherwise. It is also a bit weaker than Improved Weapon Specialization and Weapon Specialization put together, which gives +2k1 damage (Although you get the other +1k0 from Improvisational Warrior). On the other hand it is on every clown improvised weapon, of which this class seems to give you unlimited supplies. It might be too powerful depending on how it is used. |
