Im sure somewhere in another world, Clifford Roberts is spinning like a pinwheel on July 1 in his grave. His beloved Augusta National admitted two women yesterday, breaking the 80-year-old tradition of preventing them from becoming members and ending another horrible chapter in the clubs history. While Augusta National has a shoddy record on equality – the first African-American didnt get in until 1990 – give some credit to Billy Payne, the clubs chairman, for dragging the facility into oh, the 1970s. In his short time as chairman, Payne has advanced the club more than any previous chairman, especially when it comes to the Masters tournament. Hes reached out to Asia and created an amateur event there with the winner getting a spot in the field, understanding the burgeoning potential of that market. Hes allowed live streaming of the tournament on the Internet. Hes moved to have the event broadcast in 3-D. He created a new state-of-the-art practice facility for the players. Heck, he even saw to it that the media dining area was remodeled. Remember, it was only a few years ago that there wasnt even any coverage of the front nine of this tournament. Things generally move pretty slow around Augusta National and the move slower if someone from the outside is pushing. Its believed thats why Hootie Johnson didnt invite a woman to join, because Martha Burk was forcing the issue and holding a rally across the street from the club, which drew only about 30 supporters but a ton of media. Payne, however, seems to understand the outside world a little better than most. He knows that if Augusta National wants to be a leader in the golf world, it cant be a stubborn sexist enclave inside. The memory of Payne chastising Tiger Woods for his infidelities a few years back, as an example, is side-splitting. Now, at least, its moved in the right direction by welcoming Darla Moore and Condoleeza Rice into the fold, albeit about 30 years too late. Its a good move and something that speaks to the golfing world on a larger level. It also brings to the forefront golfs continuing exclusivity, racism, sexism and more. There are still many clubs around the world where women cant join, where African-Americans arent welcome, where people of a certain religion are excluded and where the rich and powerful look down their wine stems at poor folks. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the Rules-setting, all-powerful body in the UK, is male only. Muirfield, site of next years Open Championship, doesnt allow women members. Neither does Royal St. Georges, where last years event was held. Thats atrocious by any standard. In Canada, too, there are examples of clubs that exclude certain people from joining. The National Golf Club of Canada, ranked No. 1 in the SCOREGolf Top 100 ranking, is male only. The Ladies Golf Club of Toronto doesnt allow male members. Will Augusta Nationals move be a tipping point? Will it force other clubs to open the doors? At the very least, Payne can now point the finger and not have to look over his shoulder. Customized Michael Huff Jersey . Mathieu, who was injured throughout 2011, edged the key points with the third-seeded Wawrinka converting just two of nine break chances in the second-round match. A former top-20 player, Mathieu is ranked No. NFL Jason Taylor Dolphins Jersey . The CFL club announced Wednesday that Meyer will be offensive co-ordinator while retaining responsibility of coaching one of the leagues best front fives. http://www.officialbrownsteamsshop.com/autographed-t-j--ward-jersey-dl-60.html .ca! Hi Kerry, In the Bruins-Caps game, there was a penalty called against the Bruins and when Holtby came off the ice for the extra attacker, it appeared that the Caps had too many men before the Bruins touched the puck. Customized Roman Harper Jersey . Nyhaug, who is easily Canadas best BMX racer, is an obvious choice for the Olympic nomination. But his dreams of competing in London were put on hold after a crash at the World Cup Supercross in Papendal, Netherlands, in May threw everything into question. Israel Idonije Jersey .C. -- Theres debate as to where a driver wants to be in the race to the Sprint Cup title.Starting at 12:01 am et Saturday morning, MLB clubs can start diving into the free agent pool. The top names are Zack Greinke and Josh Hamilton; neither of whom will likely end up with the Blue Jays. The Dodgers and Rangers look like the best fit for Greinke, while the Angels are trying to clear enough payroll space to bring him back as well. All we really know about Hamilton is that he probably wont be back in Texas. There is already talk the Rangers are interested in David Ortiz if the Red Sox arent able to resign him. If the Blue Jays land a decent starter or two, it will more than likely be through a trade. Three pitchers they may have had some interest in are already off the market; Jake Peavy resigning with the White Sox - who also picked up Gavin Floyds $9.5 million option - while the Angels swapped Erwin Santana and cash to the Royals for lefty pitching prospect Brandon Sisk. If the Jays were into quick one-stop shopping, they might be able to fill their basket with Washington free agents. First baseman Adam LaRoche slugged 33 homers this season and drove in 100 for the second time in three seasons. Hes also a gold glove first baseman. LaRoche is also the big left hand bat the Jays need. He and Edwin Encarnacion could share first base and designated hitter. The Nats left-hand setup reliever, Sean Burnett, is also available. You can never have too many southpaws in the pen and remember, Darren Oliver hasnt completely ruled out retirement yet. The third member of the Washington trio is right hander Edwin Jackson. His career record is just below .500, but hes a strikeout pitcher and he eats innings. My top trade target would still be the Rays James Shields but it appears now he is the Dodgers top off-season target and why not. Shields has thrown at least 200 innings six years in a row. Thats ace material. NNext years free agent crop is far richer than this years, potentially including the likes of Tim Lincecum, John Lester, Matt Garza, Barry Zito, Brian McCann, Robby Cano, Derek Jeter (hes not going anywhere), David Wright, Curtis Granderson and Jacoby Ellsbury.dddddddddddd The funny thing is, you could nearly re-assemble a team of former Blue Jays. Imagine if they were all in their prime. For starters, youd have Roy Halladay, Chris Carpenter and A.J Burnett. In the pen youd have Frank Francisco (oops), Scott Downs and Darren Oliver setting up. Behind the plate its John Buck, Adam Lind at first, Aaron Hill at second, Yunel Escobar (still a Jay for now) at short, John McDonald or Michael Young at third with Young also a possibility at DH. The outfield wouldnt be the greatest but would include Ben Francisco in right and Rajai Davis (still a Jay) in centre or left. This will probably be the easiest option to turn down for 2014. Johan Santana has a club option for $25 million with a buyout of $5.5 million. Though he threw the first no-hitter in Mets history this season, Santana wont be in New York in 2014. The Blue Jays are doing a great job of keeping their managerial search under wraps. The 13th skipper in franchise history should surface late next week after the general managers meetings in Palm Springs. Ive got a hunch its between current bench coach Don Wakamatsu and Dodgers third base coach and former Expos third baseman, Tim Wallach. Most unusual name trade of the week: Rick Hahn, the White Soxs new GM with his old boss Kenny Williams moving upstairs, swapped minor league outfielder Kenny Williams Jr. to Colorado for outfielder-1B Mark Tracy, who just happens to be the son of Jim Tracy; the man who just stepped down as manager of the Rockies. |
