OSLO, Norway -- Ashley Young gave Roy Hodgson a winning start as England coach on Saturday, clinching a 1-0 victory over Norway in the teams first European Championship warmup match. Young combined with Andy Carroll after nine minutes, scoring in his fourth consecutive international to provide Hodgson with a potential striking partnership for the Euro 2012 opener against France on June 11 when Wayne Rooney is suspended. "I think he and Carroll have proved they can do that job," Hodgson told British broadcaster ITV. "Both of them were really very good." But two weeks after taking permanent charge of an England side rocked by Fabio Capellos resignation in February, Hodgson had his first setback. Gareth Barry, who replaced captain Steven Gerrard at halftime, limped off in the 73rd with a groin injury and the midfielder will undergo scans before the UEFA squad deadline on Tuesday. "If its serious that will give me something to think about as we dont have much time left," Hodgson said. Englands victory in Norway was its first since coming here ahead of winning the 1966 World Cup on home soil. "It was a marvelous start to my career as the national team coach because its not often Norway lose at home and its a long while since we have won here," Hodgson said. "I dont think you lay foundations in three days ... I hope any foundations we can lay will be in the coming weeks and months." Less than half the team that is likely to start Englands first Euro 2012 match against France on June 11 made the starting lineup in Oslo. Goalkeeper Joe Hart stayed on the bench and four Chelsea players were given an extended break after their Champions League final win a week ago. Carroll was handed his first international start in 14 months, earning just his fourth cap. And the much-maligned forward came close to a fourth-minute opener, latching onto a cross from Liverpool teammate Stewart Downing, but heading wide. But it was Young, supporting Carroll up front, who ensured Hodgsons reign started with an early goal. Carroll flicked the ball from inside the England half to Young, who raced forward and spun around Brede Hangeland before striking into the net. "Ive just got to keep putting on a performance and well see what happens when it comes to the Euros," said Young. "I think it went well with Andy Carroll. Weve worked on the partnership during training and there were a few good combinations between us." After Youngs opener, England goalkeeper Rob Green parried a rising shot from Markus Henriksen which deflected off Leighton Baines, while an inswinging corner from Norway midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen struck the near post. Captain Steven Gerrard was fortunate to stay on the pitch after a sliding studs-up challenge on Tom Hogli in the 39th that led to the Norway defender going off injured. Norway could have levelled when John Arne Riise easily skipped past substitute Theo Walcott on the left flank, but from a tight angle he sent the ball into the side netting. "At times we should have been a bit more positive," Hodgson said. "Theres an element of keeping the ball sometimes when we maybe could have played it forward a bit earlier and get those two players in. "Weve started talking about it and sowing a few seeds." There were debuts for winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who replaced Young in the 72nd, and defender Martin , who came on for Phil Jones in the 88th, as England comfortably held on for the win. Englands final match before Euro 2012 is at Wembley Stadium next Saturday against Belgium. "Weve only been together with the new manager for a few days but I think its gone OK so far," Young said. The 26-year-old middle linebacker missed most of last season with a concussion that left him wondering if hed ever play football again. Not only did Emry recover and attend training camp in the spring, he had a career year and is a finalist for both the CFL Outstanding Defensive Player and Outstanding Canadian Player awards. "Its something that crossed my mind," Emry said Wednesday of last seasons doubts about his football future. "There were a couple of guys dealing with concussions on our team and we got to talking. "Its part of the game, dealing with concussions. You start thinking Can I still do it? Will I have the speed? I had to break down those barriers through training camp and the first couple of games. Its nice to get some accolades, knowing I went through a lot. Im just glad were here now, playing an Eastern final at home." The Alouettes (11-7) will play host to the Toronto Argonauts (9-9) in the East final Sunday afternoon at Olympic Stadium. The team says more than 42,000 tickets have been sold. While the Alouettes defence drew criticism for allowing 27 points per game, fifth-best in an eight-team league, Emry was a standout. The Richmond, B.C., native led the team with 87 defensive tackles, the second highest total in Alouettes history behind Tracy Gravelys 110 in 1996. He ended star linebacker Chip Coxs three-year reign as the Alouettes top tackler, dropping him to second with 82. "Ive just taken every moment, every play, and embraced it," he said. "Im excited to be on the field again. "When you get something taken away from you that you love so much, theres nothing holding you back when you get it back. Ive slipped up a couple of times this year. Its a thin line Ive been walking on. But Im just excited to be out there playing football." What Emry calls slip-ups were nasty plays that saw him fined three times by the league. It is remarkable he was never suspended. The first was a late hit on Calgary quarterback Drew Tate in the season opener on July 1. Then he was nailed for an illegal block on special teams against Toronto on July 27. The last was a punch below the belt that floored Saskatchewan lineman Brendon LaBatte on Oct. 20. Emry may have been a little too charged up in some games. He apologized each time, but didnt let up in intensity the next time out. "Its part of the learning process, coming off a concussion and basiccally, missing an entire season -- not playing football for 11 months," he said.dddddddddddd "You have to come back and show your toughness and thats what I was trying to do. "Some of the plays were just playing football and those split-second decisions that were made incorrectly. Ive got to move on from that. I played well the rest of the year." The linebacker with the Fu Manchu moustache is not the favourite to pick up either individual trophy during Grey Cup week in Toronto. Hes up against players who set league records. The favourite for the defensive award is Edmontons J.C. Sherritt, who had a record 130 tackles, while his rival for top Canadian, Calgarys Jon Cornish, set a new standard for home-grown running backs with 1,457 rushing yards. "They both broke records in the same game," said Emry. "I was watching it and thinking its going to be difficult to get those awards. "But Im so happy with the nominations and the acknowledgment for what Ive gone through this year and what Ive done on the field. Im just excited to have an opportunity to go to the awards (ceremony) and be a part of that and represent the Alouettes." Emry hopes to be gunning for a third Grey Cup to go with his titles in 2009 and 2010. The Alouettes have moved into Olympic Stadium to get ready for the East final and are hoping the bye week they got for finishing first in the division will help them heal some wounds. That plan may have hit a snag Wednesday when safety Kyries Hebert limped off the field with a possible left ankle sprain that he jokingly called a bug bite. "Im OK. I think an ant bit me," Hebert said. "Im going to get some Neosporin and get the bump down. Itll itch and Ill be all right." Coach Marc Trestman said Hebert suffered "a little sprain. "He appears to be OK but weve got to see how much it swells up. Well see (Thursday)." Hebert had 48 defensive tackles and led the CFL in special teams tackles with 28 this season. Running back Victor Anderson, out with a concussion in the final month of the season, was back practising but wont be ready to play on Sunday. Trestman said he should be ready to go if Montreal reaches the Grey Cup game. There was hope that injured linebacker Rod Davis would be ready to return, but the coach ruled him out for the rest of the post-season. Defensive end Aaron Lavarias is expected to come off the practice roster to see his first action for the Alouettes and shore up an injury-plagued defensive line. That may force import receiver Bo Bowling to sit out. |
