NEW ORLEANS -- Roger Mason understands playing time is fleeting, especially as a role player, so the New Orleans Hornets guard stays prepared for when he gets the call. Mason scored 15 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter Wednesday night to rally the Hornets to an 88-79 victory over the Houston Rockets. Mason, who played 26 seconds in the first half and did not play in a victory over San Antonio on Monday, made all five of his shots in the fourth quarter, including three 3-pointers for the Hornets, who have won three in the row for the first time this season. "I just keep working, staying in the game, and I feel good," said Mason, who averages just over five points. "I didnt play much in the first half but to be a good pro you have to always be ready," he added. "God gave me the strength to hit some good shots." Greivis Vasquez and Jason Smith also scored 17 points for the Hornets, and Robin Lopez chipped in with 14. James Harden scored 25 points for the Rockets, who had won 10 of their past 12 games and five in a row. Harden, who was held to three points in the final quarter when the Rockets were outscored 29-10, was the only Houston player in double figures. Jeremy Lin scored nine points on 4-of-12 shooting and have five assists for the Rockets, who committed 23 turnovers. New Orleans also controlled the boards, outrebounding Houston 46-39, 16-10 on the offensive glass. Al-Farouq Aminu and Smith each had 10 rebounds. "Any time a team gets that many offensive rebounds its going to be hard to run," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. "We were not sharp tonight. We couldnt get anything going in that fourth quarter and it just ballooned from there." Eric Gordon struggled with five points on 2-of-12 shooting, but the Hornets have won four of five since his return. Ryan Anderson, New Orleans 3-point specialist, was 0 of 7 from the field, including 0 of 4 from behind the arc. No. 1 pick Anthony Davis, who along with Lopez did not play in the fourth quarter, had six points and three rebounds. "It was difficult to get (Lopez) in there with (the Rockets) playing their small bigs," Hornets coach Monty Williams said, adding that he kept his bench players in because of their performance. The Hornets trailed 69-59 after three quarters but behind Masons shooting went on a 22-2 run to take an 81-71 lead with 4:14 remaining. At one point Mason had scored nine points in a 17-2 Hornets run. The Rockets missed their first four shots of the quarter and made one of their first 12. "They did a good job of blocking the paint and really making it tough on us," Lin said. "We didnt do a good job of finding that open man and making that open pass, me included. Im the point guard and that starts with me." The Hornets, who were 1-19 when trailing after three quarters, made 10 of their first 13 shots in the fourth quarter. The Rockets 10 points were the lowest total New Orleans allowed in a quarter this season. Gordon and Vasquez sat out for much of the fourth quarter and Davis and Lopez did not play in the final period. Harden was 1 of 4 in the fourth quarter. Harden scored 15 points to stake the Rockets to a 36-34 halftime lead. New Orleans made seven of its first 12 shots to take an early lead but struggled from the field the rest of the half. The Hornets led 16-10 midway through the first quarter when Williams gave Austin Rivers, Davis and Gordon a break. With New Orleans scoring trio on the bench, the Rockets closed on a 12-2 run to take a 22-18 lead. Harden, who missed his first two shots, made three of his last five to finish the quarter with nine points. LOUIS -- Thirty-eight years ago, the last time the Arizona Cardinals were 4-0, their home was St. Louis and they were known affectionately as the Big Red. Nearly a quarter century since departing for the desert, theyre on top of their game again. The surprising Cardinals dont have one of the best offences in the NFL, far from it actually. Throw out the big plays on defence and theyre pretty much middle of the road there, too. Their games are going down to the wire, the last one ending in overtime and three of them decided by a total of nine points. Not surprisingly, theyre just a 1-point favourite to beat the St. Louis Rams. On Thursday night, the Cardinals will have a shot at being the first team to 5-0, two wins shy of the 7-0 start in 1974 by a team that featured Hall of Famers Dan Dierdorf, Roger Wehrli, Larry Wilson and Jackie Smith. One of the advantages to all the close calls is theres no danger of overconfidence. "Obviously, were excited to be 4-0," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "Weve had four up and down games. Weve had a lot of trauma in them, so theres been a lot of emotion extended. "But just to be where we are, were certainly pleased about that." The Cardinals have had a knack for handling late-game pressure since midway through last year, when they rebounded from a 1-6 start and became the first NFL team to win four overtime games in a season. All eight of their wins last season were by a touchdown or less. Theyre still in that mode, winning the 500th game in club history last week after forcing overtime on Kevin Kolbs TD pass to Andre Roberts with 22 seconds to go. The Dolphins gained 480 yards but scored just two touchdowns last week as Arizona won its seventh straight overtime game. As coaches say all the time, its a bottom line business. "They are a hell of a team, theyre really well-coached," Rams defensive end Chris Long said. "Theyre 4-0 and rightfully so, theyve done things to win those games. "Its going to be a great challenge for us. I really mean that." Theres good reason for those words of respect. The series has been quite lopsided between the club that departed St. Louis in 1988 after big money squabbling thwarted plans for a new stadium, and the franchise that replaced them in 1995 after receiving a bounty of concessions. Among them is a lease that could allow to team to leave after the 2014 season if their domed stadium isnt deemed to be in "first tier status." The Cardinals have won 10 of the last 11 since the second meeting in 2006,, half of them by double digits, and have a franchise-best seven-game winning streak in St.ddddddddddddLouis. Punt returns for touchdown by Patrick Peterson fueled both victories last season, one of them in overtime. "Im sorry that those guys are back up on the schedule again," Peterson said. "But if they give me an opportunity, I have to do my job." The Rams (2-2) have made great strides under new coach Jeff Fisher, with every game up for grabs in the fourth quarter. The defence has been opportunistic with a league-leading eight interceptions, three of them last week capped by Brandon Fletchers clinching pick with a minute to go that foiled the Seahawks comeback bid. The offence is developing despite severe injury woes on the line, with each member of the patchwork unit receiving a game ball last week after limiting the Seahawks to two sacks. Sam Bradford has had more time to establish chemistry with the deepest group of pass catchers hes had in his three NFL seasons. Cross midfield and theyre in range for rookie kicker Greg Zuerlein, whos 12 for 12 and last week became the first kicker in NFL history to make field goals from 50-plus and 60 yards in a game. If they can end the Cardinals unbeaten run, theyll be 3-0 at home, where theyre slowly regaining fan trust. The franchise was 15-65 the previous five seasons, the worst five-year streak in NFL history. "Well yes, you establish rivalries, but I wouldnt imagine we have one based on past history over the last four or five years," Fisher said. "We havent had much a rivalry with anybody, so we have to work toward that, and that comes from having competitive, great games and close games and those kind of things." Both teams have a short work week. Itll be the Rams first prime-time game at home since playing Pittsburgh in 2007, and just the eighth Thursday night game in club history. Arizona is playing on Thursday night for the first time since 2008. "Its an easy adjustment for me. Im 22 years old, so I can bounce back fairly quicker than the other guys around here in the locker room," Peterson said. If the Rams prevail, theyll have a winning record for the first time since 2006, when they began 4-1 before losing five in a row. Its a run of futility running back Steven Jackson, whos been with St. Louis since 2004 and has yet to play on a team that finished above .500. "Ive only been a Ram, so it would feel good," Jackson said. "I hope to retire a Ram, so I hope to have a lot more of those."
