NEWPORT -- Thailands Thongchai Jaidee survived a poor start on Sunday to win the Wales Open by 1 stroke with a final round 1-over 72 in in wet conditions. The 42-year-old Jaidee, who was the overnight leader, holed four birdies on the back nine at Celtic Manor after bogeying the fourth and double-bogeying the par-five ninth, where he went out of bounds before finding a bunker. "The conditions were really tough today, they were not like Thailand," Jaidee said. "I was pleased to putt well on the back nine." Jaidee finished with an overall 6-under 278 for his fifth European Tour title and his first in mainland Europe. The Netherlands Jooist Luiten (72) and Denmarks Thomas Bjorn (68) shared second place with Spains Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (67) and South Africas Richard Sterne (68) on an overall 5-under 279. Bjorn, ranked 37th in the world, was pleased with his week despite falling short on the final day. "I thought if I got 66 Id have a chance," Bjorn said. "Instead, I have left a couple out there but I knew what I had to do." Englands Ross Fisher (73) tied for sixth with Irelands Paul McGinley (65) on 4-under 280. Fisher was given a one-shot penalty on No. 14 for time taken over his first putt. Fisher was warned two holes earlier that he would be sanctioned by a shot if he continued to play slowly. McGinley, who was a vice-captain for Europes 2010 Ryder Cup victory over the United States, shot a 6-under 65, which was the lowest round of the day. "I have played well all week, but the scores havent matched it," McGinley said. "Today, I played as well as I have in my life." Saints authentic jersey .
