ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves hope theyre seeing the start of another second-half hot streak by Dan Uggla. Ugglas three-run homer in the third inning gave Atlanta the lead and Paul Maholm threw seven strong innings to lead the Braves to a 6-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. The Braves remained 4 1/2 games behind NL East-leading Washington, which earned a 6-4 win at San Francisco. Uggla is hitting only .215 but has homers in two straight games, giving him 15 for the season. He is hitting .267 with three homers and 13 RBIs in August. "Im getting some hits, driving some runners in and scoring some runs," Uggla said. "Thats when you know youre getting back on track when youre creating some run production. Thats the only thing I really care about, scoring runs and driving in runs." This is the first time the All-Star second baseman has hit homers in back-to-back games this season. Uggla was hitting only .173 on July 4 last season before he launched a dramatic turnaround. His career-best 33-game hitting streak, the longest for the Braves in their Atlanta era, helped him to be selected NL player of the month for August. He finished with a career-best 36 homers and lifted his average to a still-modest .233. "We saw it last year," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "This is a good time for him to get hot and drive in some runs." Jason Heyward had a two-run double in Atlantas three-run fourth inning. Martin Prado had three hits. Edinson Volquez gave up six runs and seven hits and two walks in only 3 2-3 innings. Following a six-game stretch where he was 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA, Volquez (7-9) has allowed four or more runs in four straight starts. He has not completed the fourth inning in his past three starts. "Its kind of frustrating because Im used to going deep in games," Volquez said. "Now the last three starts have been kind of short. Well see what happens the next game." Maholm (11-7) gave up five hits and one run in seven innings in his first home win since his July 30 trade from the Cubs. Maholm survived a fourth-inning jam when he walked Everth Cabrera to load the bases with one out. He then struck out Nick Hundley and Volquez to end the threat. Hundley was 0 for 4 and is hitting .157. "Obviously, Im not going to give into Cabrera when I have Hundley and the pitcher coming up," Maholm said. "I try to keep the same mindset no matter what, not give in." San Diego took a 1-0 lead on Logan Forsythes third-inning homer, a fly ball that hit the net on the fair side of the left field foul pole and barely cleared the wall. Forsythe stopped running before second base, apparently believing the ball was foul. Volquez, who leads the majors with 86 walks, walked Uggla to open the second. Juan Francisco followed with a double, sending Uggla to third, but the Braves could not score. Uggla was thrown out at the plate by first baseman Yonder Alonso on Brian McCanns grounder. Paul Janish hit a popup and Maholm struck out. Ugglas three-run homer off Volquez was a line-drive shot that quickly reached the left-field seats. "Wrong pitch," Volquez said. "I threw a fastball up in the zone and he put a pretty good swing to it." The homer by Uggla saved the inning for the Braves after Prado was caught in a rundown between third base and home on Freddie Freemans grounder to Volquez. Ugglas homer drove in Heyward, who doubled, and Freeman. Atlanta added three runs in the fourth. Michael Bourns groundout drove in Janish, who was hit by a pitch. Heywards two-run double to centre pushed the lead to 6-1 and knocked Volquez out of the game. "It wasnt the bases on balls that got him," said Padres manager Bud Black of Volquez. "If he executes a couple pitches, different story. The two-out home run to Uggla was a back-breaker. And then the two-out double to Heyward was a back-breaker." Chad Durbin and Cory Gearrin each pitched a scoreless inning behind Maholm. NOTES: The Padres are 3-3 with one game remaining on their seven-game road trip. ... Fans chanted "Bobby! Cleveland has been awaiting a second meeting with Kelly, the Ducks offensive mastermind, on Saturday to hopefully complete a deal to make him the Browns sixth fulltime coach since 1999.This week, the Canucks fired their assistant coaches and extended head coach Alain Vigneault. Its certainly the buzz around the hockey community, at least in the coaching fraternity. I had a chance to speak with Vigneault Thursday afternoon and he talked about both scenarios. One, where he had to deliver the news to Barry Smith and Mike Kelly that they were no longer employed by the Vancouver Canucks. Vigneault said that was the toughest thing hes ever had to face, professionally speaking. Two, in terms of his own extension, that became clear over the past couple of days and it was the product of numerous conversations with new general manager Mike Gillis. Theyve talked several times over the past month, since Gillis replace Dave Nonis, and as he said, they are like-thinkers. They are both on the same page. Gillis and Vigneault plan to get together this weekend with assistant general manager Steve Tambellini to talk about some of the assistant coach candidates. They will each compile their own lists of candidates to replace Smith and Kelly going forward. Burkes Deadline Anaheim general manager Brian Burke says it isnt a deadline, but it really is a deadline. He wants an answer from Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer as to their intentions for next year, and it wants it before the NHL Entry Draft (June 20). Its a little clouded when you compare both situations, keeping in mind that Niedermayer has a year remaining on his contract, whiile Selanne is an unrestricted free agent.dddddddddddd I spoke to Niedermayer and hes not entirely sure what hes going to do. His number one priority at the moment is awaiting the birth of his fourth child. His wife is due in early June so that is pre-occupying him for the moment. He understands why Burke and the Ducks would want their decisions - so they dont have to go through the same uncertainty that they went through last year - and he intends to abide by Burkes request. As for Selanne, again, hes an unrestricted free agent. So this was more of a courtesy being requested by Burke. Selanne has said that if hes playing in the NHL, he wants to play for the Anaheim Ducks. At the moment, though, the future of both players remains up in the air. A Word from the Head Office They havent talked yet, but you are going to see Mike Murphy and Kris King of the NHLs hockey operations department meet with the Penguins and the Red Wings. At the morning skate on Saturday, which is traditional, they are going to reinforce one more time the officiating standards. They are going to say the officials are going to call the games the same way they did in the conference finals. They are going to pay attention, though, to the crease. That speaks to Tomas Holmstrom and Johan Franzen (when he returns) and potential crease violations because of the physical contact with the goaltenders that weve seen throughout this postseason run. |
