MONTREAL -- A.J. Soares scored in the 89th minute as the New England Revolution defeated Montreal 1-0 in the final game of the Impacts expansion season in Major League Soccer. Soares was inside the box to head Chris Tierneys free kick past the reach of goalkeeper Troy Perkins to the disbelief of 19,988 spectators who watched the Impact dominate most of the game. The Revolution (9-17-8) ended a 13-game winless run in road matches and won for the first time on Canadian soil, having previously gone 0-5-3 in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. The Impact (12-16-6) ended the campaign with a loss like many they suffered this season -- on a late goal off a set piece. Montreal wanted a win to secure top spot among the three Canadian MLS clubs and be seeded first for next years Amway Canadian Championship. The goal came after Montreal wasted a succession of chances in the second half as New England sat back and played for counterattacks. A Marco Di Vaio cross got between goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworths legs and rolled along the goal-line, but stayed out as Andrew Wenger failed to react. Moments later, Wenger won a ball in heavy traffic and fed Di Vaio for another cross that the onrushing Collin Warner couldnt quite get a boot on. Frustration was evident, and coach Jesse Marsch sent in attacker Justin Mapp for defender Matteo Ferrari in the 70th minute. A minute later, the veteran raced in on the left side and had his shot blocked, then fired another over the bar. A Di Vaio free kick from 19 yards in front of the goal in the 81st minute got through the wall but was gathered in by Shuttleworth. And a corner with five minutes left in regular time saw Davy Arnauds close-range shot blocked by defender Blair Gavin. Even putting veteran striker Eduardo Sebrango in for the final 10 minutes didnt produce a goal for the 39-year-old who may have played his last match for the club. The Revolution, also playing their season finale, nearly scored on a counterattack after Montreal fullback Jeb Brovsky fell and Troy Perkins needed to make a close-range save on Fernando Cardenas in the 28th minute. Before the match, midfielder Patrice Bernier was handed the Guiseppe Saputo Trophy as the teams player of the year as voted by fans and the media. Bernier led the club with nine goals and eight assists. Customized Tom Brady Jersey . It took three minutes following his introduction for the 20-year-old to score in the 81st minute, after Czech defender Theodor Gebre Selassie equalized for Bremen on his league debut in the 75th. Customized Greg Little Jersey . Contrary to the widely-held assumption, however, Liles does not believe that he has been suffering from a concussion. In fact, the 31-year-old believes that the symptoms hes been experiencing for the past 15 games are more closely related to the trouble hes been having with his neck, specifically a "locked" feeling which has quietly subsided of late. http://www.officialpanthersteamshop.com/autographed-justin-medlock-jersey-ui-32.html . -- Zack Greinkes first pitch in a Los Angeles Angels uniform was lined to left field for a single by Desmond Jennings, who had never faced him in a regular-season game. Customized Kenyon Coleman Jersey . 2 slot to Uruguay in FIFAs latest standings. Germany fell to No. 3, ahead of its Euro 2012 group opponent the Netherlands. Group B rival Portugal plummeted from No. Customized Deonte Thompson Jersey . -- Miami Dolphins backup running back Daniel Thomas was placed on injured reserve Wednesday because of a knee injury, and three ailing starters missed practice.UFA, RUSSIA – Mark Scheifele received Canadas player-of-the-game award on the ice after Fridays victory, but he did not get the cape. Neither did captain Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who leads the tournament with seven points after adding a goal and an assist against Slovakia. Ryan Strome had a pair of goals and is second behind Nugent-Hopkins with five points so far, but he also was cape-less after the comeback was complete. Perhaps a defenceman then. Morgan Rielly had a goal and two assists while Xavier Ouellet had a pair of helpers but, nope, they were not wearing the superhero-style accessory following Canadas second game. That, of course, would be the special Team Canada cape with the slogan, The Reason, emblazoned on the back, which will be given by the coaching staff to a player after each win. On Friday, the honour was reserved for... drumroll please... defenceman Scott Harrington. "You know what," said head coach Steve Spott when asked why the London Knights captain got the honour, "his statistic is shot blocks and, I tell you what, he is so talented when it comes to killing penalties and battling for his hockey club that, in our mind tonight, he did so much yeomans work, he deserved the cape." However, Harrington did not do enough to elicit an interview request and was nowhere to be found when the mixed zone was opened to reporters following the game. Meanwhile, 11 of his teammates – Nugent-Hopkins, Strome, Scheifele, Rielly, Ouellet, Ty Rattie, Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Murphy, Malcolm Subban, Jonathan Huberdeau and Nate MacKinnon – fielded questions. After Wednesdays game, Spott noted part of the idea behind giving out the cape was to make the player wear it during interviews. "We think the cape is something unique," said Spott. "And it embarrasses them a little bit when they have to come out here and face you guys [reporters]... they need to laugh, these are teenage kids and we forget that sometimes." Nothing New This is nothing new for Harrington who, despite being one of six returning players at the selection camp, was far frrom a media darling.dddddddddddd Thats what happens when doing your job well usually means you dont get noticed. But Harringtons role on the team is critical, especially when you consider Canada lacks a true shutdown pairing at this years event. "When you look at teams in the past, maybe you had those two guys who were designated [as shutdown guys]," Spott said on Thursday. "Maybe if Ryan Murray was here, things would be different, but now its a group. Dougie Hamilton is versatile and were using him both offensively and defensively, but Scott Harrington is really the captain when it comes down to our shutdown group." One person who did notice Harrington against the Slovaks was his goalie. "Oh yeah, 100%, especially at the end of those power plays when its getting really tiring and hes blocking shots and moving pucks out and making saves for me," said Subban. "I remember one in the third, the puck was coming and he just stopped it with his stick and shot it down. Thats all you can ask for from a defenceman." And Harrington, as an assistant captain, was charged with steadying the ship when controversy swirled following the ejection of Anthony Camara in the second period. Canada was trailing its under-dog opponents at the time. "I give our leadership team credit," said Spott. "They did a great job on our bench with their messaging. We stayed resilient." "In our room, the captains stepped up," said Subban when asked what happened behind closed doors. Comfortable in the Shadows Harrington, a Pittsburgh Penguins prospect, has made it clear in the past that he doesnt crave attention. "I wasnt looking forward to having an abundance of interviews so it doesnt bother me at all," he said earlier this month after the selection camp wrapped up. And perhaps its fitting that Harrington remains somewhat anonymous. As TSN host James Duthie noted via his Twitter account upon hearing the defenceman had been shutout by reporters again, "I like it. True superheroes stay in the shadows." |
