KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. is expected back on the track next weekend at Martinsville Speedway. Team owner Rick Hendrick said Sunday that NASCARs most popular driver has been headache-free for more than a week, and that tests by a specialist in Pittsburgh showed no lingering issues from two concussions that Earnhardt sustained in a six-week span. Earnhardt will get back into a car on Monday and, if everything goes well, could be cleared to drive by neurosurgeon Dr. Jerry Petty during a follow-up visit on Tuesday. "Everythings great," Hendrick said before Sundays race at Kansas Speedway. "He feels good. Hes done everything they told him to do. He didnt have any more headaches after, I guess it was Thursday or Friday of Charlotte week, so everythings good." Earnhardt was first injured in a crash during a tire test Aug. 29 at Kansas, but didnt seek treatment for the mild concussion. He was part of a 25-car pileup on Oct. 7 at Talladega and sought treatment from a doctor who ultimately benched him for two races. Earnhardts doctor had said he would not be cleared to race until hed gone at least four days headache-free, then went through various tests and spent some time behind the wheel. That wheel time will occur Monday during a closed test that Hendrick said will probably take place at Gresham Motorsports Park in Georgia. "Hes burning up to get in the car. I mean, he wanted to run this weekend," Hendrick said. "Hes very anxious. He wants to get back. No way youre going to hold him out unless the doctor wouldnt clear him, but hes good to go." Earnhardt, who has one win and 10 top-5s this season, was seventh in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings before the crash at Talladega dropped him to 11th in the standings. Regan Smith has been replacing him in the Hendrick Motorsports ride, but Hendrick said he doesnt plan to have Smith in the bullpen if an issue arises with Earnhardt at Martinsville. "We dont think theres any reason to," Hendrick said. "Id be really surprised if we have to, but we could always go to he or A.J. (Allmendinger), one of the two." Hendrick said he was concerned there might be a long-term problem when Earnhardts headaches persisted, which is why he consulted with several specialists. The injury snapped his streak of 461 consecutive starts, the fifth-longest active streak in the Sprint Cup series. "It was good news when we went down there and the specialist looked at the MRI and there was no damage, no bleeding, no bruising, so that was great news," Hendrick said. "Junior, his head was hurting him bad enough I thought we might have a problem, but were just really fortunate." Customized Elvis Dumervil Jersey . Hes gone 13 majors without a win in the events he once dominated. Still, hes showing signs that hes getting closer. Customized Kellen Davis Jersey . Atletico dominated fellow Spanish rival Valencia at Vicente Calderon Stadium in one of the 2010 champions finest performances under coach Diego Simeone that featured Radamel Falcao netting his 31st and 32nd goals of the season. "Of course I am happy for the goals, but the important thing is that we won in such a commanding fashion," Falcao said. http://www.officialpanthersteamshop.com/autographed-greg-hardy-jersey-fw-86.html . -- San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is taking on another coach. Customized Stephen Gostkowski Jersey . Off the field, the fallout from the dispute could endure for some time, particularly in federal court. In a surprising rejection of his successors overreaching punishments, former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue threw out "all discipline" current Commissioner Roger Goodell had imposed on two current Saints, linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith, and two players no longer with the club, Browns linebacker Scott Fujita and free-agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove. Customized Bernard Pierce Jersey . He was brash and bold and changed nothing about his personality as he seamlessly navigated press events, cocktail receptions, sponsor dinners and socializing.ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell respects the due process that players in the league are entitled to if theyre arrested. Goodell just knows he doesnt have to wait for court cases to play out to determine how to discipline those he thinks have tarnished the leagues image. "We dont by policy, particularly if theres a pattern of behaviour," Goodell said Thursday during a visit to Lions training camp. "If there is not a pattern, we certainly do acknowledge the legal process and want to be respectful of that." The NFL has already suspended Detroit running back Mikel Leshoure for two games for off-field conduct. Defensive tackle Nick Fairley likely will have to sit at some point this season, too. Fairley has two scheduled days in court, including one in late November, after getting arrested in Alabama twice in two months. The 2011 first-round pick has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence and attempting to elude police charges after troopers say in May he was driving about 100 mph and initially refused to pull over. He is scheduled for trial beginning on Aug. 14 on those charges, potentially putting him in a court room between Detroits first and second preseason games. Fairley also faces a hearing on Nov. 27 -- two days after the Lions 11th game -- on a marijuana possession charge from April. Goodell said he planned to meet with Fairley and Leshoure. Fairley refused to say if he would lobby for leniency. "I cant talk about that, but I look forward to talking to him," Fairley said after Thursdays practice. Leshoure, who pleaded guilty to marijuana possession in May in one of two marijuana-related charges he faced, said a letter he got this off-season informed him of his suspension without much input from him. "Im not really for sure how that all went down," he said. "I just know I was given my punishment and I dealt with it. Ive learned from it. I knew there was going to be some kind of repercussion from it." The Lions didnt wait for Goodell to punish cornerback Aaron Berry or offensive tackle Johnny Culbreath after both had run-ins with the law, cutting both players. Berry was aarrested during the off-season on suspicion of DUI and again after authorities say he brandished a weapon.dddddddddddd Culbreath was arrested for marijuana possession. Goodell said Berry and Culbreath are still subject to punishment from the league. Just when the Lions (No. 11 in the AP Pro32) thought their off-the-field woes were over heading into training camp, they recently found out defensive tackle Corey Williams was charged with drunken-driving last year. Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has defended the job he and his staff have done to look into players past before drafting or acquiring them. "I think weve done a really thorough job analyzing guys backgrounds," Mayhew said earlier this week. "I think theres some times where weve taken a little bit of risk. We continue to look into guys backgrounds and try and anticipate what behaviours guys might get involved in, but I think this off-season was different for us. I think there will be a reversion toward the mean. "As an organization we have not had a lot of those problems off the field. I think well head back toward that as we move forward." Detroit isnt the NFLs only team to have players getting arrested and suspended, leading Goodell to recently meet with the NFL Players Association to talk about what can be done to improve choices made off the field. "Everyone focuses on discipline, but part of it is education," Goodell said. "Were talking about what other things can we do to help players make better decisions. We have a program called Safe Rides (that) any player, any person in the NFL, could call and get a ride home. Those kind of programs need to be utilized." Notes: Detroit signed CB Ross Weaver, a former Michigan State standout, DT Tracy Robertson and G Pat Boyle, and created roster space for them by waiving CB Dontrell Johnson, LS Matt Camilli and DT Michael Cosgrove. ... LT Jeff Backus returned to practice, wearing a cast to protect his left thumb. ... Leshoure (hamstring), RB Jahvid Best (concussions), S Louis Delmas (knee) and CB Chris Greenwood (abdominal surgery) were held out of practice. |
