Holmes was originally signed as a rookie free agent by the Chicago Bears in 2011 and was waived during final cuts. He was signed to Indianapolis practice squad last October and then promoted to the 53-man roster in early December. The Colts waived him in May. Holmes finished his college career at Syracuse with 274 tackles. A three-year starter at cornerback and free safety, he had six career interceptions.
