Canadas coach was left shaking her head after the synchronized swimming duet preliminaries came to a close on Monday. Sure that her team of Marie-Pier Boudreau Gagnon and Elise Marcotte had brought one of the most difficult programs to the Olympic pool, coach Julie Sauvé watched as their execution excelled even her own lofty expectations. "I felt their swim was perfect," Sauvé said. "I wouldnt change anything about the routine." But the judges disagreed, giving the Canadian duo a score of just 94.750 out of a possible 100 points for their "Jester" themed program. Combined with the score from Sundays technical performance, Mondays swim put Canada solidly in fourth place ahead of Tuesdays medal final. Russia led the rankings, while China was second and Spain placed third. "Im disappointed, I hoped the judges would be a bit more generous," Sauvé said. "Our routine is more varied whereas the Russians tend to repeat a lot of the same moves." Canada finished well within the 12-team cut-off and easily advanced to Tuesdays final. There, they will repeat the same free performance in quest of their first Olympic medal in the event in 20 years. Tuesdays scores will be added to marks from Sundays technical program to determine the medal winners. Canada enters the final 1.5 points out of third. But as they prepare to repeat their jester-themed routine, the Canadians seem unsure of how to close the gap. Their first performance certainly seemed solid; the throws displayed impressive height, the footwork was among the fastest in the competition and the synchronization, near-flawless. "Our coach told us she thought it was our best swim," Boudreau Gagnon said, "and we have upped our level of performance, even if the score does not reflect this particularly." The Canadians elected to bring a lighter theme to the pool, and their performance to a bouncy "A La Lune" by Benoit Jutras and Rob Heaney was full of clown-like head bobbing and bright facial expressions. The goal was to get he audience involved, the Canadians said, and a packed Olympic Aquatics Centre crowd reacted by clapping along. "We could feel the difference," Marcotte said. "Right before us it was the Chinese swimming and we didnt hear anything. Then for us, we felt the crowd get really really loud, so it was great swimming in here." The theme is a big departure from Canadas performance at the 2011 World Championships, where Boudreau Gagnon and Marcotte also finished fourth. "Last year we were swimming to Metallica, this year its joker. So I think were just showing the judges that we are able to do different styles," Boudreau Gagnon said. Canada has a strong history in synchronized swimming, but at the past three Olympic Games, their duet teams have missed the podium. At the 2008 Olympic Games, Boudreau Gagnon and then-partner Isabelle Rampling finished sixth. Boudreau Gagnon and Marcotte improved with a fourth-place finish at the 2011 World Championships, and were hoping to make another jump in the standings at the Olympic Games. "We are going to keep fighting until the end," Marcotte said on Monday. "Were really proud of our routine. We will see what we can improve on tomorrow - maybe add a bit more sparkle." "I think we can close the gap," Boudreau Gagnon added," If we cant close it in duets, we hope to in the team (event)." Boudreau Gagnon and Marcotte will also compete as members of Canadas eight-member squad in the Olympic team event later this week.
