PITTSBURGH -- The Milwaukee Brewers have wheels. On the basepaths, and in the standings, too. Ryan Braun hit two hits, drove in a run and collected three of Milwaukees seven stolen bases in a 6-0 romp over the weary Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. "I think people have always perceived us as a team that relies on the home run," Braun said. "Well, we really dont. Were pretty good at running the bases." Then again, just about everybody is against the Pirates. Pittsburgh entered the night throwing out less than 10 per cent of attempted base stealers on the season, by far the lowest in the majors. The number only got worse as the Brewers went 7 for 7 to post their highest single game steals total since moving to the National League in 1998. "Weve got a lot of guys who can steal bases, and if you rely on the homer, you really get yourself in trouble, so you try to find a way to manufacture runs sometimes, too," Braun said. Not that streaking Yovani Gallardo (16-8) requires much in the way of run support these days. The right-hander gave up two hits over 6 2-3 innings to win his eighth straight decision. Milwaukee moved in front of fading Pittsburgh in the jumbled National League wild-card race and remained 2 1-2 games back of St. Louis for the second wild-card spot. "Yos on a roll that he goes out there and he throws up a lot of zeroes," said Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke. Carlos Gomez and Jonathan Lucroy had three hits apiece for the Brewers, who trailed the Pirates by nine games during their last visit to PNC Park but are peaking heading into the final two weeks of the season. "We just continued to believe, continued to stay positive," Braun said. "I think with the second wild card, it gives everybody hope." A.J. Burnett (15-8) gave up two runs in six innings but couldnt stop Pittsburghs late season swoon. The Pirates are 4-12 this month. "He really wrestled out there," said Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle. "He gave it everything he had." Even if it wasnt enough for Burnett to become the first Pirates pitcher to win 16 games in 20 years. He shook off trouble in the first two innings -- when he needed 51 pitches to get six outs while giving up a run -- to pitch into the sixth for his 25th straight start. Pittsburgh took the field less than 24 hours removed from a long night in Chicago, where the Pirates waited out a rain delay of more than three hours before scratching out a 3-0 victory over the Cubs. The team didnt get into Pittsburgh until 5:40 a.m., and Hurdle let his players arrive later than usual to the ballpark after the on Tuesday. The extra rest didnt help. Gallardo has thrived as the teams No. 1 starter since Zack Greinke was traded to the Los Angeles Angels and had little trouble extending his hot streak against the Pirates. The Brewers escaped a bases-loaded two-out jam in the second when Gallardo got Burnett to ground out to second. Pittsburgh didnt get another base runner until the seventh, and by then Milwaukee had raced to a 4-0 lead. The night followed a similar theme. The Brewers would get on base with a single -- all 13 of their hits were singles -- then move into scoring position by taking off for second at the first opportunity. Eventually, the greed turned into runs. During one sequence in the seventh, Weeks singled with one out then stole second and raced home on a single by Braun. The reigning NL MVP then stole second and came home on a single up the middle by Lucroy to make it 4-0. "I think they were good times to go, and we have the opportunity anytime were on second base, we get that base hit and we got a few of them," Roenicke said. "So it was a good game." Pittsburgh briefly had a chance to get back in it in the bottom of the inning, using a single, an error and a walk to load the bases. Gallardo gave way to reliever Jonathan Henderson, who got pinch-hitter Mike McKenry to pop to shallow right field. Milwaukee tacked on two more runs in the eighth, sparked by a single and stolen base by Gomez. It was the seventh of the night for the Brewers, the most since the club joined the NL and the second most in team history. The team record for stolen bases in a single game is eight set against the Toronto Blue Jays on Aug. 28, 1992. Hurdle had no issue with the liberties the Brewers took on the base paths. "If you dont likeem stealing bases," Hurdle said, "getem out." NOTES: The series continues on Wednesday with Milwaukees Marco Estrada (3-6, 3.77 ERA) facing Pittsburghs Kyle McPherson (0-0, 1.54 ERA), who will be making his first major league start ... But Hart did something about it this time as he led off the ninth inning with his 26th home run of the season to lift the Brewers to a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hart hit the second pitch he saw from Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan (4-1) into the Brewers bullpen in left field. It was his third career game-ending home run. "You cant get down," Hart said. "Weve had a lot of tough luck this year. Our guys are out there battling and we just have to stay in the game and do what we can to win." And winning is what the Brewers have been doing lately. The victory was the Brewers second straight over the Pirates and the teams 10th win in its last 12 games. "A lot of people counted us out a long time ago," Hart said. "But we think we have a pretty good club and were making a nice little run. Other people are starting to notice us all of a sudden." Hanrahan said he the pitch to Hart was a hanging breaking ball. "The guys battled their butts off and I come in and throw two pitches and the game is over," he said. Marco Estrada gave up one run on four hits and struck out 10 in seven innings for Milwaukee. He has given up just one earned run in his last three starts. Estrada got out of a major jam in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Estrada struck out Pedro Alvarez looking after Alvarez fouled off four pitches on a 3-2 count. Estrada said he was thrilled to win the battle with Alvarez, which he called one of the toughest of his career. "He kept fouling balls off," he said. "It was tough, but I knew I just had to keep the ball down and get him out." Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Estrada pitched very well, keeping the Brewers in the game until Hart could win it in the end. "He really did a nice job tonight," Roenicke said. John Axford (5-7), who got out of a bases-loaded jam inn the top of the ninth inning by striking out Alex Presley, got the win for the Brewers.dddddddddddd The Pirates lost for the ninth time in the last 12 games as Pittburgh continues to try to stay in the National League Wild Card playoff race. A.J. Burnett took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the Pirates before giving up a two-out bloop single to Rickie Weeks. He came back to strike out Ryan Braun to end the inning. Burnett pitched 6 2-3 innings, giving up two runs and two hits. He had nine strikeouts and four walks. It was a nice bounce back for Burnett, who had struggled in recent starts. The Pirates had lost three of his last four starts and he had recorded a 6.29 ERA over those four games. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said his team was done in by 14 strikeouts. "We have plenty of opportunities," he said. "Unfortunately, weve had some games like that this season." The Pirates grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Alvarez hit his 27th home run of the season. The Brewers tied the score at 1-1 in the third inning without getting a hit. Carlos Gomez walked, stole second and third base and then scored on a wild pitch. The Brewers grabbed the lead in the seventh inning 2-1 on Gomezs RBI double. Pittsburgh tied the game in the eighth inning off of Brewers reliever Jim Henderson. Pinch hitter Brock Holt walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice. With two out, Andrew McCutchen hit a broken bat single to right field to score Holt. It was the Brewers 26th blown save of the season. Notes: Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said rookie RHP Mark Rogers would be shut down for the rest of the season. Rogers, who has a 3-1 record with a 3.92 ERA, was the winning pitcher in the Brewers 9-3 win Friday. ...The Pirates added catcher Eric Fryer, LHP Jeff Locke, LHP Justin Wilson, RHP Chris Leroux and Holt to their roster from Triple A Indianapolis. ... McCutchen did not hit a home run, breaking a streak of four consecutive games with a home run at Miller Park. |
