Last night at 12 AM Final Fantasy XII: Collectors Edition was officially released for the Playstation 2 gaming console to satisfy all the players that good hooked on the demo that came with Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. But unlike the other FF games, FFXII has a completely new battle system and menu system and stuff but the place where it takes place hasn't really changed much...The game takes place in the world of St. Ivalice (Final Fanasty Tactics/Advance).

I can start by telling you that it won't be released until June for UK. I know this because my love won't be able to get it until then. It is based around the world of Ivalice known from both Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Rabanastre is the main city that the story starts in, where you meet the main character, Vaan. He is a street urchin that dreams of becoming a Sky Pirate. The other characters of the story are Penelo (Vaan's best friend), Balthier (a Sky Pirate), Fran (a Viera who left her home to explore the world), Basch (an ex-soldier), and Ashe (a princess of a dying kingdom). I haven't played the game lately so I have forgotten the main part of the story, but you're teaming up to save the Kingdom of Dalmasca from being controlled, and Nethicite is the link between saving the kingdom and destroying it. *shrugs* I'll let someone else explain the battle system, but if you already have Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, you should know how it is.

I'll take over.

Before the story of the game actually begins, Dalmasca is at war with the Imperials of Archadia and out of wedlock Prince Rassler and Princess Ashe were married to unite Nabradia and Dalmasca into one kingdom. During the war, Prince Rassler vouches to go and defend his home land at the Castle at Nabradia (later known as The Necrohol of Nabubis). While in battle, Prince Rassler was hit with an arrow which pierced his armor almost instantly killing him. Captain Vossler Azeleas was there to carry Prince Rassler's corpse back to his widowed wife. And Nabradia fell to the power of the might of the Imperial Army of Archadia. Soon Archadia had it's eyes set on the Kingdom of Dalmasca as well eventually also wanting to conquer the Kingdom of Rozaria which lay to the southeast of Dalmasca. The king of Dalmasca offered a voucher for peace only to be imprisoned in the Nalbina Fortress.

The game actually starts here with Vaan's older brother Reks as he's joined by Captain Basch von Rosenberg who's taken a small detachment of troops and wants to save the king. During their venture to the top of the fortress Basch becomes ambushed by his twin brother Gabranth who poses as Basch and kills Reks. But before Reks dies he sees Gabranth (posing as Basch) and Vayne Solidor kill the king of Dalmasca so that Vayne becomes Chancellor of Dalmasca since Princess Ashe fakes her own death to avoid being searched for. So then the game starts there for a second time this time with you in control of Vaan, Reks' younger brother. Like KTK already said as you progress through the game new characters come to join your party, but sometimes you also get NPC's (Non-playable characters) who join the party for storyline purposes as Guests (meaning you have no control over them but are part of your party).

The battle system in FFXII is a mix between Tactics and Final Fantasy XI. The battle phases were shifted from a turn based system to a complete 3-D based system where your character can run around the creature you're fighting and hit from different angles not to mention different ways. Early on as you begin the game your are introduced to what are called "Target Lines" which means a line is sent from your character to somewhere else if the line lines up with the monster your character will attack, cast a spell, summon, use a Quickening (Mist Charge), etc. If you have issues with the lines crap you can disable them in the menu and just open the target window and just choose your target.

Limit Breaks where returned in FFXII but a bit different than before. In this game it's kind of a mix between Overdrives from FFX and the Trance ability from FFIX. Each character in the game has a total of 3 Quickenings or Mist Charge Attacks. These are all leveled ranging from a Level 1 Quickening to a Level 3. Each level of Quickenings requires a certain amount of mist charges (i.e. Level 1 Quickening needs 1 Mist Charge). Mist Charges are when your character's MP meter is completely full. These Quickenings must first be unlocked and paid for on the License Board with License Points or (LP) before you may use the Quickening. Later on as more and more characters learn Quickenings you'll be able to chain them into a multi-hit combo which depending on how you did could have something called a Quickening Addition at the end of it. Each time a Quickening is used, depending on how many Mist Charges you can hold, it will completely deplete your MP.

Same like the Quickenings Summonings work that too in a sense. Creatures you summon in FFXII are called "Espers" and each Esper is actually a fallen God which was punished for a crime or disobedience and in one case being too powerful (Ultima). Like the Quickenings, Summonings also require Mist Charges but it all depends on the Esper how many Mist Charges you'll need. When an Esper is summoned the other two characters from the party leave, leaving the Esper and the Summoner. Basically like in FFX, only the Summoner and Esper stay in battle. If the Summoner some how dies, the Esper is recalled and the party takes over. But unlike FFX in FFXII you cannot control the Esper it just follows the summoner and attacks. Depending on it's Gambit it might shift attacks or not. Each Esper in the game must be defeated before it joins your party. After it does it's placed on the License Board and one character can pay LP to gain the ability to summon that Esper and only that character can summon it not the others. And like the GFs in FFVIII the Espers can also get stronger the more their summoned. Unlike most FF games, in FFXII you must earn all your Espers. Meaning that you have to fight and defeat each Esper to make it your own. Some Espers are intertwined into the actual storyline of the game (i.e. Balias, the Gigas) and others you have to actually find on your own. Most of the time the Espers you have to find on your own will be at a higher level and much stronger than those storyline Espers.

Now getting to the key point of the entire game, it's what basically makes the entire game go round. In FFXII for you to use any weapon, ability, magick, Quickening, and Esper you need to advance on the License Board. For your characters they have to have the certain license to do certain things and use certain weapons and armor. Every single character in the game can use any weapon as long as they have the corresponding license. Some characters are more skill with wielding certain types of weapons than others (i.e. Basch is a master at wielding Greatswords and Axes/Hammers). Also certain licenses on the board actually turn into Quickenings when paid for in LP. Once a character pays for that Quickening on that certain space on the license board it disappears from the other character's boards and only appears on the board of the character who unlocked that Quickening. The pic of the character will replace the block where the Quickening used to be.

If you have any more questions please feel free to PM or email me and I'll go into further detail about it. Since I am very close to actually beating the game (all hunts, side quests, etc.).

Uh.... There's a bit of problem in your post, Heartless. 1) March 13th, 2007 hasn't even come around. 2) Final Fantasy XII came out February 23rd, or at least my love now has it and he lives over there.

For us here in the US it came out Halloween. We're the first ones to actually get it. Japan this time is actually the last so even the UK will get FFXII before Japan, but the US are the only ones to get the Collector's Edition version. Everyone else gets the regular version.

The games fun, has a new, fresh storyline to it. The things that I like about the Final fantasy games is that it's alot like a story, the storyline usually has that 1800's cliche to it. That's why X-2 sucked, it was too modern*raises pitchfork*. The battle system could've had a free-form combo system, it gets a bit boring waiting for all those attacks to come.

The thing that kinda ticked me off was the whole new Quickening system. First you have to unlock it to use it and even then if you can't/don't want to spend all your MP it's useless. Not to mention having only one character have is completely useless unless you chain it into a combo chain to preform a Quickening Addition (i.e. Luminescence, Black Hole, Inferno, etc.). I liked the original Limit Break/Trance/Overdrive system.

Same here. Though the Limit break could've been better wtih damage taken and damage dealt. I though the trance system was neat, everyone had their own little thing, though to me Garnet's was pretty useless unless you had Odin or Alexander. But the Overdrive has to be one of the best 'power hit' system to date. Everyone had their own thing that powered up by the basis of the certain character, and it would just kick-ass. Aurons kinda sucked though since I can never find anymore then 3 spheres so I never got past the Shooting Star overdrive. But this quicken, as you said, just sucks out all the mana. It was good with Basch, but everyone else had some type spell that I used.

Dude Auron's Tornado attack freaking kicked ass. Mainly because it's his only Overdrive attack that actually dealt damage to all targets not just one. But personally Tidus's Energy Rain or Acrobatic Blitz was the best attack.

So far in my game I have been able to get each character far enough on the License Grid to get everyone all their Quickenings. And personally I stick to the following three: Flame Purge (Basch), Pyroclasm (Vaan), and Maelstrom's Bolt (Princess Ashe).
