James was angry. He wanted, more than anything, to know what his father had done to earn such respect. As much as he loved the fame and the attention that came with it, he couldn't fully accept it until he knew why. What could Harry Potter have done in the past? It had had to be before James' birth. Had he done something momentous during school? James sighed. No, of course not. How could anyone get famous at school. Still, the thought was intriguing. Maybe he, James, could do something to make himself known. He didn't want to be in his father's shadow. He wanted to be his own man. Well, to a point. He wanted to be different, yet the same, if that were even possible. He admired his father, looked up to him. He wanted to grow up to be just as good as Harry was. But, he didn't want to be compared to him all his life. As the oldest, it happened to him more often than Albus or Lily. He stood up. Maybe there was something in his father's office. Harry's office was off-limits to the Potter children. Still, James was able to sneak in every now and then. Now, his parents were having the "you're going to Hogwarts" talk with his brother. This was his chance. James crept down the hallway. When he reached the very last door, he stopped. Slowly, he turned the handle and opened the door. He knew that, should he push to hard, the old door would creak. Thankfully, it stayed silent and allowed him to enter the room. It was a rather average-looking room. It had a computer (a Muggle contraption that Harry liked to use), a bookcase, and a large desk full of drawers. James started with the bookcase. He pulled books off shelves and flipped through them. Though interesting to read, there was nothing about his father's past in any of them. Well, he hadn't expected there to be. There were laws against printing certain things about the past. James would never understand why. Still, he pressed on. The top of his father's desk was almost bare. There was a journal that James flipped through. But, it only contained his father's slanty handwriting. Closing the journal, he placed it back on the desk. Then, he opened the top drawer. He gasped. There was a large piece of parchment on the top. It seemed to be folded many times. On the front, it said "Messrs Mooney Wormtail Padfoot & Prongs are proud to present" Then, a little ways beneath that, it said "The Marauder's Map". The lower words were surrounded by a large castle with a flag that read "Hogwarts". James unfolded the parchment. Inside, there was a detailed map of the castle. However, the strange (or not so strange) part was that there were names inside the castle. Very few, of course, because it was summer, but they were moving. It was as if the map was live. Just as he was turning to the next page, James heard footsteps in the hall. Before he knew it, the doorknob was turning. He was going to be caught! Quickly, he shoved the parchment into his pocket and dove under the desk. Hopefully, he wouldn't be seen. |
