Recently I have been taking photos of paintball at Metro Paintball Games in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This is a combination "there's a lot of people here and no way I would be able to play since I'm not on a team" and to help out DSS, Metro Paintball Games, and Omaha/CB paintball as a whole. The response from the players, field, and shop has been extremely positive (I get probably 4-6 PMs a day saying either thanks for taking photos or else asking when I'll be at MPG again to take photos next) and I think I'm getting some good photos, so I will share it with everyone here:

Let me know what you think and keep an eye on this website (and this thread) and I will update when I get more uploaded. I get shot a whole hell of a lot more than normally when I take photos, so I hope you like them. If there's something you like or don't like also with what I'm doing or have any advice, let me know.

I got LIT UP on Saturday taking photos.

Twice I got hit within an inch the kibbles and bits. Twice I got hit in the camera. Once I got hit on the finger. Once I got hit on the throat. I was goggled while holding up the camera (two inches lower with the shot and I would have been hit right in the lens). I made a bad choice in clothing and players were wrapping bunkers and gunning me up. (NOTE: Don't wear all black when taking photos.) In the end though, the photos got posted. Go take a look if you would like to and please vote for your favorites by clicking on the preview pane and giving it either a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down.

Most local photographers won't go on the field to take photos so everything from the area is on the other side of the net. In fact, one of the local "paintball photographers" showed up later on after they found out that someone was taking better photos than them. She took maybe 20 or 30 more photos over the course of three games with the net in the way (I was taking 10-15 a game and was on the field for all of 15 seconds at the most).

You should get a Neon Green Jersey or shirt to put on over your cloths, that way players can distinguish you from the other team. I know you're rolling in dough but I'd hate to have to replace a couple hundred dollar camera due to a paintball.

I have a towel I wrap around my camera and the lens has a UV filter on it, which is just a clear filter that I use to protect the lens from splatter. I did have a bright orange shirt on Saturday, but the players asked me to take it off so I'm not giving away position (which happened a few times). Sunday I did wear a green Vicious jersey so I looked somewhat official as well as I stood out from the players (and I had three people offer me money for the jersey off my back because it's a rare 1 of 2 5xl jersey and the only other one is worn by Carl Bortol who owns Vicious... they normally only come in xl and 2xl). When I'm outdoor, I wear a red longsleeve shirt and it's a lot easier since the field is bigger so there is more room for both me and the players to hide.

Hopefully this is the last real weekend for indoor photography and we can start getting outside more.

Another side note about photography:

The owner of the store is loaning me one of his extra camcorders this summer ("I have upgraded many times over since then, so I don't really care if it's broken at the end of the summer or not" - Carl Bortol), so I will be acquiring software off the internet to edit that and put it up on YouTube. Expect the Omaha Paintball Channel on YouTube to start sometime this summer. You better believe if you think I'm whoring out the photos, the videos have potential to be 10x's worse! It sounds like this summer I will be doing the photography/video thing at most 2x's a month and playing 2x's a month, but I will get SWEET discounts at the fields I go to![redit][/redit]

Make sure if you can fit that thing with a UV filter, you do so. I have been hit on the camera a few times and the UV filter has saved my ass from getting paint on the actual lens. I actually have three of them (they are about $20 each) and if I get shot in the camera, I just pull off the filter and put on another one so I can keep going until I get a chance to clean them.

Thanks.

I uploaded photos from both Saturday and Sunday today at the Vicious Series event at Mad Cow Paintball in Cedar Creek, Nebraska at the above link. I was the only photographer on the field all day (until I ran out of battery) through rain and 2 minutes of shine. All-in-all this weekend, I think I uploaded about 330 photos over two days of practice and tournament play.

I also have a polarizing filter, but that isn't used as much because it takes time to get it set and turned correctly and in paintball the photo can be lost in the bilnk of an eye. That, and those are expensive (about $50 a filter) so I only have one.
