Hey all. This is going to be my little place for stories that I want to show you guys and all. Most of it will be MM related, but not all. All of them, though, will be short (or as short as I feel I can get them) and one shots for the most parts. I'll have other topics for more lengthy writings. Anyway, this first story is just something I did to help flesh Morph Moth's back story out some, and is considered canon, at least to me, for the C:IA and all. ********************* Why We Fight Time: January 14th, 21XX; 4:58 PM Place: Island City's Junkyard X stood in a very familiar hallway to him, taking a breather as he double checked his systems and weapons. He was also making sure his recently acquired body armor was still functioning, the white coloring barely scratched from the various small insect mechaniloids that he had battled getting here. Shaking his head, the heir to the blue bomber turned back to the metal shutter he had to go through to reach the leader's room, steeling himself and heading forward. Almost as if expected, the metal shutter quickly opened up, allowing the Hunter access. Once he was in, though, and his feet crunching into the massive and solid pile of junk that seemed to comprise the floor. X looked upwards as the shutter closed behind him, a series of beams creating a makeshift roof, leading all the way from wall to wall, two of the walls seeming to be comprised entirely of junk. “So you finally arrived X. Truthfully speaking, I was kind of hoping we could avoid this meeting.” A voice said. “Me too. After I figured out who was here, I almost wanted to turn around and leave.” X replied. “I bet. Its not easy to fight a comrade, even if we weren't really ones for long.” “You were a Hunter, even if it was for just one operation. You saved many humans, as well as reploids with that operation.” “But that is in the past now, X. For now, I guess we must fight, especially if you are to get to the bottom of all this.” Slowly a small opening formed on the bars, and what looked like a ball of robotic junk slowly lowered into the area, held up by what was apparently a very strong silk string. “You've changed, Morph.” A pair of eyes seemed to open on the ball, staring out and at X. No words came from it, instead it began to rock itself, moving around the area while still attached to the string. With out saying any more words, X prepared his buster, ready for the first attack. An attack which quickly came, junk suddenly shooting out from Morph's form, flying out and everywhere. Mentally cursing himself, X engaged his dash system, quickly moving from where he was to out and on the other side of Morph, even as junk rained on him and his nearly all white form. Wincing at the impacts, X twisted his body, even as it was still moving swiftly, to point up at Morph, firing off a charged shot from his buster at the junk ball. Even though he was struck rather dead on, Morph hardly seemed phased at all by the attack, still swinging around and spewing out junk everywhere, creating a very uneven and very obstacle ridden battlefield. “Give up X, while you still can! You can still get to the bottom of this all with what you have now...” Morph said. X shook his head, the trim of his armor, fists, and entire helmet turning a light purple in color. “Sorry Morph, but you know I can't do that.” He replied, jumping up and firing off a Strike Chain. The attack missed Morph, but even so, at the apex of his latest swing, the string was suddenly cut, the ball of junk falling down and into the ground below, seeming to bury into it. Landing from his jump, X kept his eyes alert, looking around for where his foe might appear as his armor took on a green tint. He wasn't waiting long, though, before the ground began to shake and all the junk began to spew up and in a spray as Morph began to 'swim' through all of it. Diving left and right, dodging what he could of the junk, X let loose with a charged Spin Wheel as soon as he could. Even with his accuracy, and a successful hit, the attack barely even phased Morph, and didn't even seem to cause any kind of damage. Cursing under his breath, the Hunter was barely able to jump up and onto the wall behind him as Morph came through. Stopping his attack after bouncing off the wall, Morph shot a string of silk back up to the roof, using it to pull himself back up into the air. He just stared at X with out any kind of emotion in his white eyes, watching the now dark blue Hunter slide down the wall. Taking his chance, X fired off the Sonic Slicer, the energy blades flying out and slicing off pieces of junk from Morph, but not even damaging the string. Knowing he would need more power than what he was using now, X equipped the Speed Burner to his weapon systems, but didn't get a chance to use it before Morph began to pull junk up from the ground and into his own body. Wincing and grunting as pieces of junk slammed into him from nearly every direction, X struggled to power up and maintain a charged shot of the Speed Burner, even as he tried to dodge the attacks. Quickly he began to climb up along one of the junk walls, but Morph seemed to follow his moves, pieces of junk starting to peel off and head to him, plowing through X at the same time. Muttering, the reploid pushed off the wall, activating his dash system again, this time for an air dash, flying over Morph and landing on the ground on the other side. Turning around faster than Morph could, X then jumped back up and once at the same height as his foe, let loose with the charged Speed Burner. This, in turn, forced his dash system to go active once more, pushing his form into the unleashed flames, a barrier going up around him to keep the fire from harming him, and allowing it to stick as he plowed into Morph. X's gambit paid off as the oil and junk began to fry Morph's circuits. Crying out, as his entire body was engulfed in flames, Morph shook himself quickly and violently. Breathing heavily as the flames died down, Morph stared back down at his foe, his look nearly as passive and emotionless as his own. “I see its no use holding back. Very well then.” Morph said, his form being pulled back up and into the roof. Once beyond X's sight, and above the bars that made the roof, Morph shattered his junk shell, his cocoon. This, though, caused a chain reaction, destroying the bars and showering X with more junk. His transformation into the more humanoid form, Morph Moth slowly floated down to the ground, landing and staring over at X. “Are you ready X? The sky's the limit...” The human moth said, even as the two junk walls fell apart with out any kind of support between them. “If we must Morph, then I am ready.” X replied, nodding to his foe. “For the past, then, which we shall never regain.” Morph said, his wings flapping again as he began to take off, building a charge in his systems. X stood there for a bit before he closed his eyes, opening them again after a bit, showing the resolve that he now held. “For the future, and the change that it shall bring us.” X said, shifting back to his normal colors and charging both his busters. “For the present, and those that we swore to protect with our lives.” Both intoned, their minds being on the same wavelength. “This we swear...” With those words, Morph Moth threw his hands forward, palms out, the energy he had been building shooting out in a beam of light and energy down at X. Jumping and rolling to the side to avoid the attack, moved himself into position for his own attack, unleashing one of the two charges he had built up. The blast of plasma tore into one of Morph's wings, the reploid doing his best to compensate for the loss of mass in the wing. Not giving up, though, Morph dived at X, unleashing a trail of dust and silk behind him, both of which began to clog up X's systems and causing more damage to the Hunter. Getting himself out of the way as quickly as he could, X turned and fired the other plasma charge off at Morph's other wing, hitting it square in back and causing the moth to tumble to the ground, skidding along it some. Panting a bit, X began to walk over to where Morph lay, half wondering if that was it. It wasn't a smart move on X's part, as Morph quickly shot back up into the sky, his wings seeming to have been repaired, and flinging a large block of junk and dust at X. Surprised, the blue hunter was unable to make it out of the way before the mass struck him, forcing him to go on his own flight into the junk piles. Morph quickly flew higher and higher, gathering up energy as he did so. He wasn't sure how prepared X was, nor did he want to take any chances. Morph knew he had to end the fight and to end it soon. X, in the meantime, pulled himself out of the pile of junk he had been inhabiting, draining a Sub-Tank at the same time to restore his energy. Looking around, he tried to find Morph, soon looking up and seeing the flying reploid in the sky. Not expecting anything good, X latched onto one of the stable walls and began to dash and jump up the side of it. As he did so, he thought back to the past, if only for a bit. Back to when he and Morph were preparing for the one and only operation Morph did as a Hunter. To a single bit of information that Morph told him. It was at this point that Morph fired off a stronger beam of solar energy at the Hunter, pegging him dead on and into the wall. While the beam itself wasn't hot, the force and the amount of energy was enough to cause significant damage to his systems. Holding onto the wall as best he could, X raised his buster up at Morph, switching to the Speed Burner once more, even as the beam continued to pound at him. Wincing, he fired off a shot, the twin flames spinning around each other as they flew off to slam into Morph Moth's body. Crying out a the sudden and intense heat, Morph began to fall towards the ground, his wings burning off and the beam being disrupted. No longer being pushed down and through the wall, X let go, he himself falling to the ground as well, impacting with it just a few seconds after Morph did. The two reploids remained on the piles of junk for a while before stirring some, X picking himself up and out first. Dragging himself over to Morph, he pointed his buster at him, ready this time for anything that the maverick would do. Morph, though, didn't bother to try and fight back now. Instead, he slowly and carefully pushed himself up, trying to not to give X a reason to fire off another shot. Slowly he motioned to his right arm, indicating something to X. Nodding in response, X carefully aimed at Morph's chest before firing off a Speed Burner at point blank range. The force and damage was enough to take Morph Moth off-line, the reploid slumping in the hole that he had made on impact. Reaching over to Morph's right arm, X opened up a few panels and took out his weapon chip. Parts of it looked damaged, but X trusted that the techs back at the headquarters could repair it. Holding the chip carefully, X stood back up a bit unsteadily before looking back down at Morph. X then went and carefully pushed Morph all the way into the hole, covering it up with junk and burying the reploid. “...And this is why we fight.” X said softly before teleporting out. Time: January 14th, 21XX; 8:36 PM Place: Maverick Hunter HQ X sighed some as he sat on the roof of the Maverick Hunter headquarters, back in his original blue armor. He stared up at the clear night sky, but was only able to really see the brightest of stars due to the lights of the city. None the less, he sat there and stared up at them, just watching the sky, lost in his own thoughts. The day's events weighed heavily on the Hunter, and this was but one of the many times now he has wondered why he continued to fight and almost mercilessly slaughters his own kind. He sat on the roof, unable to come up with the reason why, unable to truly convince himself that what he was doing was the right thing to do. Closing his eyes, he thought back to the fight with Morph Moth, and then even further back, to the only time the moth reploid was a Hunter such as himself. Standing up, X opened his eyes and looked up one last time to the sky. While he couldn't actually see it, X knew that his eyes easily told the tale of his own thoughts, of his own indecisiveness and inability to convince himself of what he was doing. Soft steps and a cane lightly touching the floor brought X's attention to the fact that he wasn't alone now, the reploid turning around to find the still aging form of the one who had not only found him, Dr. Cain. “Ah X. I knew you would be up here again. Still having second thoughts?” The doctor asked. “Yes, I am. I just don't really understand why we have to fight each other. Things can't be settled peacefully with out weapons?” X said, watching the old human carefully, in case something should happen. Dr. Cain smiled lightly, chuckling a bit as he walked over to the blue reploid. “You know, while I don't have any proof of this, I do believe that your predecessor, Mega Man, might have had the same thoughts.” “Perhaps... but he was also a robot.” X replied. “Oh, not from what reports and few entries we have from Dr. Light. Why, according to them, Mega Man, or rather, Rock, had become the very prototype for you and the rest of the reploid race. His mind might not have been as advanced, but he has been reported to act much like a human at times.” Dr. Cain said. X stood on the roof, looking at Dr. Cain for a while before going to lean on the railing some, looking back up at the sky. He didn't have many memories of Dr. Light himself, just some scattered and disjointed images and the capsules, the latter of which seemed more like preprogrammed messages than anything. “But if Rock had such thoughts... why did he continue to fight against his own kind?” X finally asked. “Because, X, he was the only one who truly could. In the end, when the world asks you to save it, there is very rarely any other option other than to honor its wishes and to fight for its survival. Some day, though X, there will be a new generation of Reploids who will be able to fight along side you, and when that day comes, and when you realize it, I don't think you'll be having second thoughts again.” X sighed and looked down at his own hands. “Maybe Dr. Cain... I'd rather not wish it on others though. Not to go through this on their own.” “For now, though, you should go and get your rest X. The rest of us are doing our best to help you from here, but as you know, none of the other Hunters are really ready for these kinds of front lines.” X nodded, turning and starting back for the stairwell into the headquarters, stopping half way there. “Dr. Cain... Morph Moth said that there was more going on here than we knew... do you think he's talking about the X-Hunters and Zero... or something more?” X asked. For what seemed like an eternity there was silence between the two as Dr. Cain thought and mulled over what X had asked. “Perhaps, X. I can not say for certain, as we do not know why reploids go maverick, let alone what all goes through their mind when they do. Morph could have been spouting nonsense to throw you off... or there really could be more behind this uprising than we know.” “Thanks Doctor. I think I understand now.” X said, heading on his way again. “Anytime X. I'm here to talk if you need me.” The good doctor replied. X nodded lightly in response, realizing in the end that the Doctor was right. This was his fight, and only he could fight it right now. In the future, though, that could change. Silently X vowed that he would never let anyone have to fight to protect the world on their own. “For the past, which we shall never regain. For the future, and the change that it shall bring us. For the present, and those that we swore to protect with our lives. This we swear, and this is why we fight.” |
