Today is a sad day for Centralia, Pennsylvania. For those of you who don't know the story, Centralia is (was) a small town in Pennsylvania plagued by a still-burning coal fire from 1962. No one knows precisely how it started, but it's believed that someone burned some trash in a pit that unfortunately had an exposed coal vein. And from there, it spread underground. The state thought it wasn't a big deal until the '70s, when carbon monoxide started seeping into people's houses and a 12 year-old kid almost fell to his death through a sinkhole that opened up underneath him. The local government tried to pump water underground to put the blaze out, but by then it was too late. The fire had spread too far. They started evacuting folks 'round the '80s, but a few elected to remain, even after the town was all but demolished in the late '90s. It's also the inspiration for the movie version of Silent Hill, hence my fascintion with this burg. Big surprise, I go there whenever I'm in the neighborhood. But now, the state government wants everyone out. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100205/ap_on_...ia_s_final_days I sort of knew this day would happen. The state revoked zip code around the same time they razed the empty buildings. Technically, these guys are squatters. And a town where you can breathe in a daily dose of carbon monoxide and get sucked down a smoky, piping-hot sinkhole without warning isn't exactly a place where'd you want to settle down and raise the kids. But that said, the dozen folks or so who've been living there have been there for generations. These guys are losing their homes, and their homeland through no fault of their own. And they're being booted out by the very guys who could've stopped this from happening. You can't help but nurse something of a grudge. And hell, this could happen to any town. Not underground coal fire part, but the whole, 'your home town going to shit while your government sits on its hands and doesn't act until it's too late' deal...Okay, depending on who you ask, that's probablly happened more than we like to realize, but you get the idea. Farewell, Centralia/RL Silent Hill. |

It sounds like they had a lot of time to move out, tho. Still, wow. Can't believe the fire's still going on strong. It seems like a sad tale tho. |

I actually live like 45 minutes from centralia and have visited the town many times. It's actually not that bad...the whole town kind of reminds me of the the city overrun in "Red Dawn". Anyway..its not that bad, its actually kind of cool to study the geomorphology of the place. |

Alright, there's no need to get so outwardly hostile. Time Chan, please don't post in old topics. Check the date. If you have to dig back a few pages, don't bother posting in it. Afterall, all of these old topics will no doubt get in the way of the multitude of fresh topics being posted at a furious pace here. But you get the idea. |

I'll pipe in to back Rich up on this one. Generally it's bad form to go off topic, but ressurrecting a dead post to do so is also pretty bad. |
