Bugged Out
|
I'm announcing the second holiday here in about a month, but this one is far more serious and far-reaching. On the early morning of June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York. Like usual, it was supposed to involve merely several hours of beating and arresting drag queens and effeminate young men and masculine young women. But for one of the first times in American history, the gays fought back against government oppression. It turned into a violent siege, an uprising that lasted several days and nights. Forty-one years later, the Stonewall Riots are recognized by many as the beginning of the American gay rights movement. From Proposition 8 to Don't Ask Don't Tell, the fight continues, in other ways and means. I've never been involved in the gay scene, myself. Pride and politics aren't my thing. Today, though, I bought a cheap rainbow-colored wristband and wore it to work instead of the usual black one. It's literally the only rainbow-colored item I own. It's a small gesture, obviously, but it means something to me, at least. |

Oh wow, I had completely forgotten about Stonewall, heh... of course, I was never all LOL POLITICAL ACTIVISM myself, but I nonetheless remain a major supporter of equal rights (seriously, why isn't gay marriage fully legal yet?), so I understand the historical significance of something like this. And I have lots of gay friends and family, so yeah. *waves a rainbow flag, ready to impale any and all bigots on the pole should the need arise* |

I'll admit to being ignorant of the Stonewall Riots until your brought them up, but like Avi I'm pro-equality, gay rights included (even though I believe the entire institution of marriage is draconian and needs to be done away with, but I digress). Keep on fighting, ladies and gentlemen. Never give up. |

WARNING!
|
I too haven't heard about this before now. Interesting, to say the least. Not too just go with the flow here, but I'm all okay with someone being gay; to say the truth, one of my relatives is in fact a homosexual. And it doesn't bother me a single bit.

Don't listen to Avi! Use all the darkchips you want.

Of course a defining point in homosexual rights has to be in a year that ends in 69. Frigging ruins it for me. |

...oh my god. SDJFLSDKFJSDKLFjsdlkfjsdklfjsd lkfjsdklfjsdlkf jsdklfjsdlkf XD But yeah, kinda wouldn't expect many to know about Stonewall if they don't really have any kind of connection to the gay community, whether you're homosexual or not. I only just learned about it last year, actually. ^^; Sadly, their fight for equality kinda falls to the wayside amidst all the moral guardians who live under the delusion that being gay is OMG A PROBLEM. May as well label every other minority group "sinners" for just being the way they are. |

I wouldn't blame lack of knowledge of this on any "moral guardians". These sort of things are just taken for granted after they're done. Like Women's rights and Racial rights. I can't really recall anything regarding either, except for some pretty vague trivia. |
