Firstly, gotta say...Even though this isn't new news, I'm really "meh" on the title. It seems like an attempt to crib off The Dark Knight's amazing popularity. Well, can't entirely blame Nolan for that; Dark Knight is unquestionably one of the best films of the 2000s. But anyways...villains. Originally, the rumors were that Johnny Depp would be taking on the role of The Riddler. I'd have been okay with that. Depp is insane, and Nolan has proved himself of being able to write amazingly deep characters and plots, so the two of them probably could have made this idea work very well. It should be noted that I had major doubts about Heath Ledger playing Joker...but we all know how that turned out. But alas, we'll be getting neither Depp, nor Riddler. Nolan confirmed this a few months ago, but gave us no other details, other than the underwhelming official title. However, we now have confirmation as to who will be playing what villains. We knew that Tom Hardy (Earmes from Inception) was signed on in a previously unidentified role. Now its been confirmed that he'll be playing... Bane. Wow. That kinda came out of left field. Bane? I was expecting Black Mask after Nolan shot down the Riddler theory. Now, Bane can work if he's written like he was during his first appearances- a surprisingly smart mastermind that can physically dominate Batman to he point of crippling him. While I doubt we'll be seeing much back-breaking to end the Nolan Batman trilogy, I think we can count on Tom Hardy playing a smart version of Bane, rather than a bland, steroid injected henchman. And because Nolan and Ledger completely defied my expectations by a thousand fold, I've got to give Hardy and Nolan the benefit of the doubt here. This is especially the case since Hardy was really good in Inception. Then again, everything about Inception was good. But I digress. But, I still have doubts about the second confirmed character: Selina Kyle (from which we can probably safely assume at least one Catwoman appearance from), to be played by Anne Hathaway. Hmm. Well, like Ledger, I didn't really like anything that Hathaway had been in previously. Neither one of them were in any movies that caught my eye, so I can't really comment on her acting skills. All I know of her is from brief snippets I've seen of The Devil Wears Prada, and internet ramblings of her being hot. I dunno. She doesn't seem like a "Catwoman" type of actress, especially compared to Michelle Pfiefer. Then again, Batman Returns was intended to have a completely different vibe to it compared to Nolan's vision, so that version of Catwoman had her sexuality pretty much maxed out. Not that I'm complaining. I get the feeling we'll be seeing a much more subdued version of Catwoman this time around, being less a piece of objectified eye candy, and more of a complicated love interest amidst Batman's attempt to re-establish himself has a credible hero to Gotham after taking the fall during the Dark Knight's finale, all as he deals with Bane. It certainly seems promising, and Nolan, of all directors, has the vision to pull it off. I guess my only question is whether or not it can match the Dark Knight's grand vision while delivering a thoroughly satisfying wrap up to this thus far excellent vision. I just don't know if I'd have ended it using Bane, who may push Nolan's established rules on having more realistic villains. Unless they decide to use a venom-less version of Bane, or change its effects from outright superhuman strength to something more realistic. I just know that it'll most likely be good. |

1) Inception was an amazing movie. 2) There are illegal drugs that exist today that give users superhuman strength whilst they fry their brains. |

Bane and Catwoman, huh? I sort of suspected that Catwoman was coming, what with Bane I'm willing to run with for the next movie...IF he's gonna be portrayed as he was in Knightfall. But I think Nolan would know better than to portray him as a steroid-fuelled lummox like they did in Batman and Robin. And after 'Inception', I am willing to trust Tom Hardy with the role. But I wonder if this means he's gonna bring Zombie, Bird and Trogg with him. I'm not sad to learn that neither Riddler nor Black Mask are going to show. I never liked either of them. Riddler's just annoying and Black Mask I didn't find terribly imaginative. I am however, obligated to be disappointed that Scarecrow ain't showing up, even though I knew darn well he was a done deal after Dark Knight. |

I think we'll see as much of Catwoman in this move as we did of Scarecrow and Two Face in Bats 1 and 2. Still, I'm surprised they didn't tap into Talia for this one. Which ha sgotta be the last one. As the daughter of Ras al Goul she's gotta be included at some point. Bane. Yes, if he's written like he was in Knightfall (especially the Vengencer of Bane special), she'd be very good to have on. Ever since then, I hate to say, he's been a very lame vilain. They even took away his drugs. What's his gimmick gonna be without the drugs, I ask you? So far both Batman movies have been good, so I'm looking forward to this one. I have to admit, I'm not too disappointed in losing Riddler. They gotta keep away from villains done in the first series of films ... Batman has a whole rich cast to choose from! I dunno if anyone really has a better rogues gallery than Batman. |

While Talia would make an interesting choice, it just doesn't seem like there'd be enough time for an arc like that. She would have needed some sort of set up prior to Rises to give the character justice. Suddenly springing her onto the audience after a sequel with no mention of Rhas would be a little odd. Keep in mind that Nolan has been adamant about keeping the Batman movies contained in a trilogy. I remember he and Warner Bros had some sort of tiff after Dark Knight's release, so they're lucky just to have him around to finish it off. I don't think they're too worried about staying away from villains used in the Burton continuity. Bane, after all, was given a horrible adaptation for Batman & Robin, made to be a mindless lackey playing a role of minor importance completely overshadowed by Poison Ivy and Mr Freeze. This was a character that literally broke Batman in half for the lulz, reduced to some green bondage freak randomly screaming and grunting. What I'm most curious about is how they'll handle Bane's back story. Is he still going to be a man who was raised from the day he was born inside of a Latin American prison? Will Hardy be able to pull off a convincing accent if that's the case? Or, will Nolan exercise some creative freedom here, as he did with Rhas and Joker's stories? Two-Face and Scarecrow's stories were really consistent with their comic back stories, though. I'd like to see Bane pulled off as some sort of drug pusher amidst the hunt for Batman. But, even if that's not the case, I'm confident hat whatever Nolan and the crew come up with, it'll be excellent. |

I think Talia could work even without any mention in DK. When it comes to villains, the Batman movies remain pretty isolated, Scarecrow's inclusion nonwithstanding. Anyhow, I didn't mean Bane when I was talking about taking the Burton movie's villains, aas you're right in saying he was Bane in name only. I was thinking of Riddler possibly being included. And Catwoman. They're probably gonna rework Bane a bit. They did for everyone else. His comic book reason for hating Bats is a little odd though, so maybe they'll change that if nothing else. |

If Bane is going to be the big, main super-villain, so be it. If there was someone else to take the role Ra's and Joker did, Bane would be reduced to a henchman, and if he truly is going to be in this film, then he needs to be driving the antagonism, only to do the character justice. Perhaps the GCPD goes crooked in trying to hunt down Batman and they hire Bane, a foreign crimelord who has arrived to sweep up the loss of power created from Maroni's death, but comes with his own personal demons of a dangerous enhancing drug. Catmwoman, meinwhile, steals Batman's thunder in vigilantism while Bruce is on a leave of absence, consumed with doubt and frustration (The Joker was causing such destruction and pain, Bruce only has to the beginning of this upcoming film to actually let all the devastation truly settle). This new superheroic presence raises hopes once again for Gotham; including Batman, whi is inspired to work with Kyle to hunt down Bane. Why do I go to such speculation for a plot that will likely never happen? THe world will never know. Nolan has proven he is an unreadable and unimitatible filmmaker time and time again, so I can never find out why Riddler wasn't put in, but at least I can try: One guess is trying to completely reinvent the character and create a new MO for which he is drawn to ruin Batman. Personally, I felt that in this film series, where the popularity of villains doesn't matter, and one where the main villain must have a personal vendetta, or have a history with Batman, Hush would be a great choice, but that is just like Riddler, where the mainstream character has been so woven into the traditional comic-book continuity that the writers would have to start from scratch (Which I don't see as that much of a challenge, what with the Joker and all). My idea is that Hush arrives the same way I speculate Bane does, but hires "Riddler", a criminal hacker, to find out who manufactures Batman's suit. Only using the moniker "E. Nigma" for porfessional hirings, Riddler really is, well, an enigma, and one who does not require attention (So Depp would not work for that; Riddler would fit the same way Scarecrow or Two-Face did, as plot devices). When Riddler uses his skills to find out the Batman conspiracy goes all the way up to Bruce Wayne himself (Which was possible since Fox resigned at the last film, over outrage of exploiting personal technology by Bruce), Hush recollects the personal histroy he had with Wayne years back, and makes it a deep, almost insane obsession with destroying his name on evety level. There I go, fanatical fan-fiction again... I stopped there, except a weak choice of actors for Hush (Jason Statham...I suck as a casting director). I really hope Nolan can ignore the wild expectations and, for the first time, make a superhero film trilogy where the last movie doesn't suck.
