I watched these a while back .... but in Japanese. It's nice to be able to understand this episode.

Y'know, I am left to wonder why they did not play "Ode to Joy" when he beat the game.

From the GCCX I've watched so far, it seems the subtitles don't add a whole lot. The narrator just describes what you can see happening and Arino mostly says variations of "What's this?", "Yosh!", and "Abunai!!"

Nonetheless I've been strangely enthralled by these episodes. It's something about seeing these games I've played so much already -- especially the classic Magamans -- through the eyes of an adorable novice that makes it all seem fresh and exciting again. The stings of dramatic music/sound effects and Japanese people in the background going "oooOOOHHH!" every time a mundane challenge is completed don't hurt either.

Basically, if all Let's Plays had Japanese people going "oooOOOHHH!" in the background, I'd probably tolerate them a lot more.

Kotaku "aired" some of those episodes with a dubbed narrator. For someone that's not a big fan of Let's Play, I think these were unexpectedly fun. I particularly enjoyed the Ninja Gaiden one.

I think the reaction shots and the overall treatment elevate it from a let's play. They skip a lot of the boring stuff and highlight things you'd want to make note of. And, small as it may be, I like their boss profiles. No new information is given, but it does make it a step above the let's play format.
