it is easy to overwhelm mankind with money. Instant riches can often send even the smartest man astray, and therefore, a man's greatest tool can often be his worst enemy. Money has the insane ability to make a man great as quickly and easily as it can destroy him. No other force on Earth has that sort of power.

But while money may have changed Charles Hanson, it didn't change his granddaughter Adrienne at all. Before the lottery, she was a simple girl. After the lottery, she was a simple girl with a pair of designer jeans. Not a lot changed for her as it did for the rest of her family.

Adrienne Hanson led a very normal life. She was born in California, the only child of Victoria and Robert Hanson. Both had been banking on getting a boy, so the scrawny, redheaded turnip of a girl that popped out had been a considerable disappointment, but they had no desire to try again. They'd done just fine the first time, and it was too much effort to be disappointed again. So they were left with Adrienne. It was obvious in the beginning that she was special. She was a baby that rarely cried, always very peaceful and calm. Her intelligence began to show very early on, when she began to form words with her blocks. She was no prodigy, but she was somewhat above average intelligence for children her age. She lived in a townhouse in the suburbs with her parents for eighteen years, going to school like a normal child, playing sports, reading books, joining clubs. Most of her scholarships ended up being sports scholarships, because while she was calm and kind, there was a certain competitiveness in her, and all of that softness was lost on the battlefield. it was her only chance to let loose and she took it gladly. Her main sport was baseball. What could she say? She liked beating balls around with thick wooden sticks. Every day after school, she'd twist all of her long, curly red hair up into a bun, spread sunscreen over her freckly face, tug on her uniform and become someone far different from the person everyone else knew her as.

Her grandfather won the lottery when she was sixteen.Thirty-four million dollars was a lot of money for a small family like theirs. Her grandparents retired, and her parents retired. They bought new homes, new cars, new clothes, but Adrienne wasn't as interested in the material world they lived in. Yes, the house they moved into was lovely. The pool was amazing, and she wouldn't say no to some new clothes, but binging just wasn't healthy. Because money could break a man as easily as it could make him great. So she allowed the rest of her family to carry on as they pleased, and she continued to merely coast along; to let the world take her as it pleased.

Soon, high school ended, and already her friends began to drift apart. Sports teams offered her positions, money, scholarships into wonderful schools, but Adrienne wasn't looking to jump right into post-secondary eduction. She declared a desire to travel, to work on her art, and personal self-improvement. It was an odd concept for a girl who seemed to be so flawless, but off she went a week after the end of high school on her soul-searching mission in her grandfather's old '67 Cadillac.

Even from the beginning, she was a nurturing sort of child. Things around Adrienne just seemed to flourish. The garden in their old back yard was beautifully maintained, but when they worked, Victoria and Robert were too busy to maintain a garden. The hollyhocks and foxgloves leaned toward to walkway, reaching up high over the heads of the sunflowers and creating a tall archway over the cement path. Moss lined the walkway to the small frog pond, but opted not to squeeze itself up through the cracks in the cement. Perhaps the garden just grew that way, but maybe there was someone sitting out there at odd hours of the night, acting as traffic director for the growing things in the garden.

Adrienne's trip had so far taken her up into Canada. it wasn't so much a soul-searching mission, but that was what it felt like. It was a deep longing to find someone who understood her life. A search for a kindred spirit, she supposed, though it sounded pretty gay. it just didn't feel like she could possibly be alone out there. There had to be someone else like her. Maybe not exactly like her, but with some sort of... gift. A power of some sort. Maybe they would be able to enlighten her. Were there lots of them? Where were they to be found, and could any of them tell her how to continue her life as a freak?

The white Cadillac pulled up in front of a smoky sort of cafe, and Adrienne set her sunglasses on the dashboard. What time was it? Her stomach growled a response; lunch time. Slipping her feet back into her sandals, she pushed open the door and stepped out onto the sidewalk. Both of her parents had been considerably tall, but left Adrienne at a mild 5'10", which certainly wasn't bad, though she could have stood to be taller. The vibrant red curls were heavy, hanging loose to about her waist. Today -- as every other day -- her dress was mostly simple; a green tanktop with some big flowers on it, a pair of jeans and a belt, some sandals, and one of her thick, random-things necklaces. it was just a long string with different things on it; wooden geometric shapes, flowers, shells. One one wrist were a couple of bracelets, and on her left shoulder, the Japanese symbol for 'tranquility' was etched into her skin. In that smoky cafe amidst men with this beards and girls with dreadlocks, Adrienne just seemed to fit. She ordered some tea and a sandwich, and took a seat, allowing sharp green eyes to roam over the surrounding tables, ears picking up on bits and pieces of random conversations.

Andaris and Elohin had left at the conclusion of explosive argument that nearly ended in violence. They were tired of the rules and morals their family had imposed on them for sixteen years, so they announced they were leaving. Everyone but the immediate family of the teenage twins quickly found their ways from the room; this wasn't going to go well. Their parents began shouting once the room was clear, and their older brother leaned against a wall, silent but all knew he could do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. Maeglin was definitely a larger than threat than Mother or Father.

Andaris soon began shouting back at their parents while Elohin stood just behind her with his arms folded across his chest, eyes locked with his older brother's - almost as if a challenge was issued. The father grew quiet after a few minutes, leaving the two women yelling. After nearly half an hour of female voices being thrown across the room at each other, Maeglin finally moved from where he was; the room was instantly silent. He and Elohin both burst into combat mode, ready to tear each other to shreds. However, their mother wasn't about to let her sons try to kill each other again. The first time had been hard enough on her. She called Maeglin back and left the room with her oldest child and husband, leaving her two younger children to do as she pleased. There was nothing she could do to change their minds.

Within the hour, Elohin had piled belongings into their black Lexus, and the pair were speeding down the highway at nearly ninety miles an hour. Andaris had warped time around herself and her twin, bringing their ages to the age of freedom, twenty-one. The blew across the northern border of the US, crossing into Canada. A few police tried to chase them down for speeding and then fleeing, but it's hard to chase a car when rock walls raise themselves in front of the pursuing vehicle.

They finally stopped at a cafe, ducking behind the building to quickly change clothes. Elohin looked rather impressive. From a young age, he had worked on his physical image, and his twenty-one year old body was layered with muscle. Khaki pants were held at his waist by a black leather belt, and a grey sleeve-less shirt covered his broad chest. A dark blue shirt was worn over that, the front left unbuttoned. He wore yellow tinted sunglass in front of his blue eyes, and his brown hair was worn short to keep it out of his vision.

Andaris was quite the opposite. She let her long black hair fall over her shoulders onto her black blouse that mostly concealed the red corsette she wore beneath. Her naturally red eyes were hidden behind blue contacts. Slim black pants clung to her legs, and she walked confidently in her black heels. Most men would have considered her stunning. Andaris had long known she was beautiful, and the shift to her new age had only enhanced her appearance. She’d spent too much time with her boyfriend one night, and since then she’d nearly craved the male physique. Few boys could resist her either; if they did, she’d simply change their mind for them. The only thing that kept her safe was her brother Elohin. He watched out for her as a shepherd looks after its flock. With only one sheep to watch though, Elohin let nothing get by him.

Leaving their long leather coats in the car, the entered the cafe and ordered a pair of drinks, quickly taking a seat out of the way. Andaris scanned the cafe telepathically, searching for anyone that was focusing on the pair. "No one's terribly interested in us thankfully, Elohin," she said quietly, "But the one over there," she motioned with a jerk of her head, "is quite talented, if you catch my meaning."

For a second, Adrienne's breath caught in her throat. Something very odd and new struck her for a moment, and she felt eyes on her. Feeling that she was being watched was no extraordinary gift; anyone can sense eyes on them. But something hit her, and it hit her hard. It was almost like the feeling of losing hope, suddenly getting an amazing idea, and then realizing that someone would need to die in order for the idea to work. All three aspects of that clashed into one firm, brick wall of something shoved hard into her chest.

The redhead took a deep breath, watching her own hand stir her tea. The dark liquid inside of the cup swirled slowly, resembling a dark, watery vortex. There was something wonderful about that feeling, but at the same time, so... dooming. Like being alone, and suddenly feeling that you're being watched, having the brief hope of it being a human, and then turning to find a raptor. her better judgment told her not to turn around and see that raptor -- or in this case, the pair of raptors. Because if she doesn't accept the fact that the raptors are there, maybe they really... won't be?

And yet, maybe they could somehow help. Maybe they have some piece of information on them that could lead her to the answers she'd been looking for her entire life.

Heart thudding dully in her chest, Adrienne placed one elbow on the back of her chair, and twisted her torso around slowly. her eyes fell on the twins, and she managed a small smile.

Andaris grinned. "The girl's thoughts are as clear as day. Clearly untrained by our kind. She's no threat." She flipped her head, throwing her hair over her shoulder. "Ah...she's taken notice of us. Go on, Elohin. Work your charm if you can," she said with a laugh, wondering what her twin would do. Elohin wasn't exactly known for the Surion charm. He was too quiet, too reserved. His father, his uncles, his older brother...even his nephew and some of his younger boy cousins had it. It had just skipped him for some reason.

Elohin cracked a grin for a moment, but it quickly left. He turned his gaze over to the girl, face empty of emotion. No joy, no sadness, no anger, no fear...just empty. The blue of eyes seemed to fade into a stony grey, almost as if a reflection of feelings he exposed on his face. His eyes met hers; he pulsed his control over gravity, shifting it to seem to draw her toward him. Andaris was watching Elohin carefully and felt him pulse his control. She giggled a little, laughing at the moment. "Good move, Elohin. I'm impressed." "I don't have to impress you, sister." His flicked his glance at her for a moment, and she shifted uncomfortably. Apparently Elohin still held their last fight awfully close to his heart.

Elohin stayed focused on the other girl, playing with gravitational fields to make it seem as the world was pushing and pulling her to him. It seemed as if it was working, but he wasn't sure. "Andaris, if you're going to rob the place, go ahead and do it. It's not like anyone will notice." "Fine. I'll brb...but you won't notice anyway, will you..." Her time warp power flexed for what to the area was a mere second, but to Andaris it last nearly fifteen minutes. She went through the cash registers and managed to find the cash reserves. She "borrowed" about $300 dollars from the cafe and a few customers. Giggling, Andaris even took a moment to satiate her more animal feelings and enjoyed feeling up one of the cuter male cooks. She returned to her seat across from Elohin and released time. "Three hundred. Good enough for now? It's less than half." Elohin nodded and continued focusing on the young woman across the room.

The male's eyes seemed to draw her in. Of course, that was the only part of him she'd focused on, as his face caught her and his expression took a firm hold of her, reeling her in like a limp fish in a coma. Her heart rate quickened considerably with a sort of quiet panic. It felt as though he was going to pull her in and encase her in some sort of vicious, rock-hard grip. She would be enveloped in cement, and nobody would find her again. Her family thought she was just off doing her thing, so it could be years before anyone even began to look for her.

Finally, something snapped that connection. The chair slipped out from under her, creating a loud clattering noise and a dull thud as she hit the floor. The contact between their eyes broke, and she got to her feet hurriedly, cheeks flushed and quite obviously flustered. Adrienne apologized to the people around her and dusted off her jeans. She was forgiven with a few light laughs, and the rest of the cafe returned to whatever they were doing. But that boy was still watching her, wasn't he?

Taking a sip of her tea, she braved a glance back to them, and those cold eyes found her again. The redhead picked up her tea, and moved to a seat a little bit further away, which would have been a great idea if it weren't for the fact that she knew they knew something.

Why was it that the first people to truly scare her were the only people on her trip so far that seemed as though they may have some answers for her?

"Well, Andaris, I failed again. I just don't have it. Maeglin was easily the best of us at it." Andaris nearly spit out some of her coffee at his comment. "Don't laugh. It's not funny. I'm the only guy in the family who can't do it..." He clenched his fist, and it slowly turned to stone. Andaris raised an eyebrow to his reaction.

"That's your problem, Elohin. You're more centered on your stone abilities. Try tapping the fire portion of yourself when you go for a girl. Dad was only a pyrokinetic when he got Mom. Same for Maeglin. That could help you. You're just too cold when you go for one. Lighten up. Literally. Hell, try smiling." Andaris knew what she talking about; with her mother's beauty, she could lure most men into a trap. "Just be warmer. And lighten up the gravity trick. A little is good, but you're probably over doing it."

Elohin drank from his water bottle for several moments, draining nearly half of it. "Whatever. I'll think about it...but I'm done for now." His hand returned to normal in a few seconds once his agitation had faded away. "Let's just go. We got we needed from here. We'll hit anonther place for more later if we need it. I think we're good for today at least, though." He stood from the table, straightening his shirt to look more neat. "Oh, and don't go feeling up people during your little time stops. Do it while they can at least enjoy it too..." He grinned at his sister as he headed for the door.

They were leaving. Now was the last moment of the last chance she may ever get to have her answers. What if there were only a couple of them, and they were few and far between? What if it was just the three of them in the world? She hadn't heard reports or anything of people with odd powers, so maybe it was just them. That would be horrible. Scary, and horrible, because they were different and most people couldn't stand things that were different.

Hurriedly, she pulled a ten dollar bill from her wallet and left it on the table as she got to her feet. Her stomach told her she was making a mistake, but she had to go for it. She couldn't just let this chance go by her like that, could she?

Adrienne pushed in her chair, made sure she hadn't left anything behind, and hurried after the two.

It wasn't until she was right behind them that she realized she hadn't figured out anything to say before she made the decision to run after them. She'd just decided to go for it, but now that she had, what came next? What was step two? The redhead swallowed anxiously.

"Who are you?" She asked, keeping her voice lowered. "You... know things. You have answers for me. Who are you people?"

The twins immediately stopped moving; a third person was now involved. This was going to get interesting. 'I'll just drive her off, brother,' Andaris told him telepathically. 'We don't need her for anything afterall.' The young woman of the twins turned carefully and glanced up and down the new person in a quite obvious fashion. "Miss, I see no reason to even let you know our names, let alone give you answers about anything."

Elohin placed his hand around Andaris' upper arm. "No need to be rude, sister." He continued turning, releasing his sister's arm, and faced Adrienne. "I'm Elohin, and this is my sister Andaris. What sort of answers are you searching for?"

His sister interrupted him at this point by flash freezing time. "What are you doing?!? There's no reason to involve her! We can do just fine on our own!" His sister was turning red in the face now. Elohin couldn't resist a small smile. "Aw, you're angry. Calm down. But seriously, having a third person wouldn't be a bad idea. If it comes down to it, we'll also have a scapegoat. Just have to be careful about shit we say and do. So just chill and go with it."

Andaris wouldn't admit it, but the real reason she didn't like the newcomer was that she was a girl. If it was a guy, there would've been no problem; Andaris needed a new piece of ass to play with. "Fine, Elohin, but if things go up in flames, this girl is your responsibility. I'll cut her loose at any time I feel it's necessary." Time resumed it's normal course, if slightly accelerated for a few minutes to regain the moments passed while frozen. Time is an awfully tricky thing.

Elohin smiled at the girl, hoping she hadn't noticed the jump that usually occurred when Andaris stopped time but kept herself and Elohin free to move. It was small, almost insignificant, but it was there. Sharp minds could catch it if they were intently focused on the pair.

Adrienne hadn't been waiting for that jump, nor had she been expecting it. It just came and went very suddenly, and she presumed it was her own mind being tricky or lagging somehow.

The girl was a bitch. Adrienne already knew it would be tough to get along with her. She had a negative aura, an uncomfortable feel about her, and the redhead did anything but approve. The male, on the other hand, wasn't as forward with his nature, though she was sure neither of them knew what they projected. He was quieter and softer; he had a white aura, while she had a dark aura. They didn't mean much to most people, and were almost invisible, easily passed off as ones eyes playing tricks on them. But the auras existed there, around every single human being, and Adrienne feared she could be getting into something horrible. Something that would end badly for one of them, and chances were, it would be her that wound up hurt.

"I want to know about you, and me." She responded slowly, choosing her words carefully. She didn't know if people like them were hunted. What if she gave away what they were, and they were all killed because of her stupidity.

Adrienne was careful not to say anything too bland, but looked at the male with a sort of drilling stare, waiting for him to understand what she meant.

Elohin could barely supress his laughter. "Are you seriously asking that? Andaris, go ahead and show her some talent of yours. That'll give us enough time to explain things, don't you think?" His sister snorted by snapped her fingers for show and stopped time around the trio of youths. "I'm assuming this is what you were talking about?" Elohin asked the girl.

Without pausing for an answer, he continued. "We're just different. Something in our genetic make-up is slightly different from most people, and it allows us to do things consider freakish. As you can probably tell by now, my sister can stop time. She can also warp it around people, causing them to age or grow younger. We're both currently under the former effect for a five year growth. We're only sixteen, but we sure don't look it. Andaris is also fully telepathic and telekinetic, so don't think you can deceive us."

"On the other hand, my powers are bit more straight forward. I can create and manipulate fire, earth, and water, and gravity can bent to my will. For example, I can increase gravity in a certain area to make things seem to weigh more. I can also do the opposite, making things weigh less. By creating gravitational fields at abnormal angles, I can literally draw things toward me." Elohin shrugged, his hands turning to stone as he did so. "Not much else to tell you about us except we come from a family that is...well, we've had some run-ins with the government. Every single one of us is 'talented,' and it scares the people in charge of the country."

Andaris had taken to tossing psychic energy back and forth between her hands as Elohin spoke. She chimed in saying, "As for you, we have no idea what you're capable of or why you are able to do things. Ours is inheritance; yours could be any number of reasons. You can come with us if you want; it doesn't matter either way. One thing though - if you roll with us, you follow our rules."

Andaris unfroze time and started toward the Lexus she and Elohin owned. He looked at Adrienne and shrugged, letting his powers fade away. "You can introduce yourself in the car if you come with us." He chucked the keys over to his sister so she could drive. Walking backwards, Elohin approached the car still facing Adrienne. "So, you coming or not?"

This left her in a very small bind. Nothing that couldn't easily be overcome, but the redhead needed to think about it a little bit. A white aura and a black aura. That could mean any number of things, but mostly, it meant there was a fifty-fifty chance of something horrible happening. and that, obviously, wasn't good. But there was also that chance that things would be alright, and she'd learn more, and she'd meet people, and she'd come out a better person than she would have been if she were to stay there. if she were to refuse their offer, and let them go, and not step into that sleek black car.

Slowly, she turned her head to peer over her shoulder at the old antique convertible. What if she started a new life, right then? What if this was it, and she never came back. What if she never would be Adrienne Hanson again? Well, at least her grandfather wouldn't be expecting his car back. She nodded to the boy and reached into the cadillac, grabbing her heavy backpack and slinging it over one shoulder before hurrying off to join the other two in their car.

Though there was a fairly slim chance of her returning to that cafe, she kept the keys with her. Maybe, someday, she'd find it again. Maybe she'd see the old, battered air freshener from the 70's hanging in the window of a familiar vehicle twenty, thirty, forty years from that day. That second.

Smiling, she moved to catch up with the other two at the car, physically and nearly emotionally ready to embark on yet another adventure.

Elohin grinned at Adrienne's nod. "Alright then. Time for a ride. Andaris, where do you think we should go?" His sister shrugged as she opened the driver's door and slipped inside, only barely managing to avoid Elohin's playful swipe at her hair. "Fine then. We'll figure it out on the way, I guess." He shrugged then back flipped over the vehicle, planting one hand on the roof of the Lexus for stability and to push off for momentum. He hopped into the passenger seat, and once Adrienne was situated in the back of the car, Andaris sped out of the parking lot and onto the streets, blowing by a police car.

"Andaris...we aren't trying to draw attention to ourselves yet. Later we might be, but right now we're just trying to get set up somewhere." Andaris smirked as they approached a busy intersection. Cars were flying through the light at fifty to sixty miles per hour. Slightly over the speed limit, but no one could right all of them tickets. Andaris accelerated toward the easily deadly meeting of paths.

Meanwhile, the police vehicle following them was having difficulty deciding whether to catch them or to let them crash into the flow of traffic. He quickly opted for the latter option, slowing down and letting them pull further ahead of him. There was no way he could do anything about the law breaking now; there was too much space between them. He hadn't even had time to get a license plate number.

Andaris' smirk flashed brighter for a moment then vanished, leaving her with a cold, hard expression. "Elohin, you best act now or all three of us are going to die." "But..." "Just do it, and stop your whining." Frowning, Elohin focused on the ground beneath and ahead of the car, pulling it further and further up as he reached further away. A "natural" ramp of stone now ended just next to the traffic flow; a ramp that would easily give the Lexus plenty of room to clear the busy street.

That was all she needed. Andaris floored the gas pedal, and soon the Lexus with its three occupants were sailing over the highway even as Elohin reconstructed the ground he had ripped up. "Your turn, sis," he grimaced as he braced himself. "No problem." Andaris took hold of the vehicle through telekinesis, perfectly controlling its descent until the wheels met the asphalt again, and the car tore down the street once more. "Nothing like a good thrill to make a meeting memorable, is there?"

It would have been a lot nicer to have a nice, quiet meeting. adrienne didn't need dramatics, she was already impressed by the two, but now they were careening down busy streets and using their powers to manipulate the world around them negatively, and some part of her would rather they'd died, because she had the feeling this was how the entire thing would be.

As they neared the busy intersection, Adrienne could feel her heart rate increasing steadily and listened to the exchange. Elohin wasn't a bad guy. He was edgy and cruel but he wasn't a bad guy, on the whole. His sister, on the other hand, was. She was a plain old rotten girl, Adrienne knew. And though they could both put up an amazing fight against her, she knew their powers, and they didn't know hers. And eighteen -- almost nineteen -- years was a long time to master ones own abilities. She watched Elohin the most so far. if he wanted to, he could overturn his sister's power over the two of them. He could be the one with the control, and it didn't seem like he was taking advantage of that. Maybe he was scared. It was a possibility.

Andaris told him to quit whining, and Adrienne knew that that would be the point where she'd reach over and smack the girl right in the face. But it wasn't her sister, and perhaps smacking someone who was driving wasn't particularly wise, so she kept her hands to herself, watching the sky above them darken considerably as they hurtled up the ramp, sailed over the intersection and were set smoothly back on the pavement.

As they were returned back to solid, reliable -- or so Adrienne had thought -- ground, it began to rain softly, hardly enough to even be considered rain; it was spitting faintly. it spattered softly against the windshield, hardly noticeable until it began to come down a little bit harder. Adrienne rested her forehead against the window and swallowed slowly, watching puddles beginning to form on the side of the road. The sky was a dull grey, not quite stormy, but sullen and sad, almost regretful. A nice, quick change from the pleasant sun that had been shining minutes earlier.

"Yes... nothing like a good heart-attack to start a relationship..."

Elohin laughed at Adrienne's comment. "They are. People rarely forget heart attacks; they're incredibly easy to remember. Plus, Andaris and I usually partake in crazy events such as that. Between her and I, we can do practically anything without repercussion. You should probably get used to it." He glanced over the shoulder of the chair and gave her a smile. "Don't worry about anything. Only once have we had an issue with controlling a situation, and that involved our older brother. We shouldn't run into him." The last word was clearly filled with malice. Neither of the twins were fond of their brother.

"Andaris," Elohin spoke to his sister now, "Perhaps we should head for the interstate and head southeast for a while. If I remember correctly, the climate in the Appalachian Mountains isn't too bad right now. Should be a few months of moderate weather if we travel south far enough." "I prefer the city. West coast or east coast, I prefer the big cities to small towns. They're just so much more full of life and activity and boys." Her beautiful smile crossed her face with her last words.

Elohin rolled his eyes at his sister's comment. "You truly are our father's daughter. You think just like him: below the belt." The young man turned in his seat so he didn't have to twist his neck so far around. "What do you think, uh....I'm bad with names. Either you didn't tell me, or I just forgot. I'm not sure which though...anyway, where do you think we should go?"

The boy turned on her and she was obviously alarmed. Her? Her opinion? She was just the girl in the back seat, her opinion didn't mean anything. She was just along for the ride, and wherever they decided to go was where she was going. All she really knew was that South-East would lead her back home, almost.

"Um... it's Adrienne. But most people just call me Red. I think..." She swallowed. THe hostility of the other female in the car made her apprehensive. She wasn't as willing to share opinions knowing they would most likely be trashed. Most girls had a competitive nature aboutthemselves while they were with other girls. They got catty and angry, and most of them didn't let down their guard, even around Adrienne's calm nature. People like that were difficult for her to work with. Difficult to manage. "I think that if you're trying to avoid run-ins with the law, you ought to stick to the more rural areas." She commented slowly. "But I suppose urban areas can provide better resources faster." It wasn't up to her. She wasn't sitting behind the steering wheel.

Nobody's perfect, and I stand accused, for lack of a better word, and that's my best excuse.</span>
