The New Hope Clutch is hatching! And to everyone's surprise a White has spilled onto the sands after the combined help of the candidates freed it! To top it all off a huge pride of felines is attacking the Weyr during the Hatching! Will all the babies survive? What about the people and Dragons of the Weyr? So far one Bronze has been killed, and Hikari has nearly been murdered herself by the blood thirsty cats, only escaping by pure luck!
This, is Maori Weyr. The home of the last few left behind after the great Evacuation, and the few who will not forget their ties to the old world, Earth. Will you join our ranks? Or flee back North, where comfort and the security of many Weyrs lies.

Those candidates who were hold-bred had brought their belongings to the barracks in massive chests or sacks... Elial, on the other hand, had brought his in piles that he carried in his arms. This method had taken him several trips more than everyone else, though he had considerably less unpacking to do in the end. To most anyone else, the stacks of odds and ends strewn about his room might look like junk... but to Elial, each item was a treasure. There was the colorful seashell he'd found last turn, the rock that looked like the Weyrwoman, his favorite wherhide boots... none of those things were necessary for a successful candidacy, perhaps, but they were fun to have around and made his new room look more like home. Home had always been in the Weyr for him, just not in barracks with tons of other, older children. Some of them might not be older, he supposed, but they all certainly looked like they were. He'd have been lying if he'd told anyone he wasn't intimidated by the prospect of becoming a candidate in general. Still, he had more turns to try for a dragon than most did due to his young age, and while not Impressing the first time would be sad, there would be plenty of hatchings to come in those turns. That was, of course, assuming the Weyr survived that long. More and more people were talking about those who'd fled North having forgotten those who remained in the South, but Elial didn't believe any of that gossip. His parents had fled North, hadn't they? They'd be coming back for him, wouldn't they? His father out to be, at least.
For the moment, he decided not to dwell on such depressing matters. He had a lot of organizing to do if he was going to make this room his own! The place didn't necessarily have to be neat and tidy; there were places for all his favorite things, he reasoned, and it was going to be a lot of work moving them around. Perhaps someone would happen along and help him out? No one else seemed to be down in the barracks at the moment, but there was always a chance...

Oisi stood in the entrance to the barracks a not-small, not-large sack flung over her shoulder, it’s braided drawstrings wrapped around her fist. She’d been Searched a while back and had been traveling between the Hold and the Weyr frequently, stretching her time between her candidacy and her apprenticeship at the Beastcraft Hall, or whatever they were starting to call it. But with a clutch due any day, she supposed it was time to relocate to the Weyr permanently…or at least until she failed to Impress. If that happened, she would probably return to the Hold stables, not really comfortable with the idea of needlessly staying in the midst of oft-violent riders that were prone to losing themselves to desire whenever a dragon rose to mate.
Naani and Tansha didn’t mind the move, however. Both of the ‘lizards had been in jovial moods since she had informed them of it and even the tattered green was sort of fluttering around the wide space that was the common room. Well, more of jumping from perch to perch and executing a wobbly glide between them. “Tansha, I have an errand for you.” The young cinnabar zoomed over to her Bonded, lighting on her head and rooting through her hair, indicating her excitement at being given an important task. Oisi chuckled. “Would you be a dear and see if anyone’s around?” It didn’t sound that way, but she would be more comfortable settling in if she could do it in private.
Tansha nibbled her ear and took off, zigzagging her way through the barracks, disappearing briefly into each room. They were empty. She started to go back to inform her dearest of this, when she noticed a young boy in one of them, busy moving things around. Curious, she settled on one of the stacks of whatnots, peeping at him. Or trying to anyway…when, as usual, no sound came out, she smacked her tail against the pile, sending it cascading and trapping herself in an itemalanche. Barely able to move and with only her tail sticking out of her prison (waving madly and thrashing against things) she began to throw one of her silent tantrums, sending desperate thoughts of panic out to Hers and anybody else who might’ve been nearby.

... and all of the sudden, out of nowhere came a firelizard. Elial whirled around to see a bright red tail protruding from one of his piles of things. Also, there were strange, frantic feelings coursing through his consciousness that he was fairly certain didn't belong to him. He'd lived among firelizards and their larger cousins for the better portion of his young life, and in that time had experienced the byproducts of their feelings more than once. Still, it was unsettling to him to have the creature's fear projected into his mind. He immediately knelt down to free the brilliantly-colored animal from it's prison of knick-knacks, a process that involved moving several pairs of trousers and at least one stocking. Once the little beast was liberated, Elial noticed for the first time how strange she--he presumed it was a she, anyway--looked. Covered from head to toe in shocking orange-red, she was unlike anything he'd ever seen before. He'd heard rumors circulating among the other weyrbrats that such a firelizard existed, but hadn't thought it possible. Were there others like her around? Who did she look to? He'd thought he knew which firelizards belonged to which people, but this girl challenged that notion.
He smiled at her, hoping she wouldn't blink away. "Hey there little red, you lost?" He asked. "You okay? Sorry my things fell on you..."
Trying to touch her would probably send her flying, but perhaps if he offered her food... then she might be more accomodating. Most firelizards enjoyed extra attention, but even those who weren't as social relished edible treats. As luck would have it, he'd taken an extra meatroll with him after his last meal. They liked meat, didn't they? Well, he'd find out soon enough.
Without taking his eyes off of her, he darted over to where he'd stashed the meatroll and grabbed it. "You like meatrolls? I do. I guess maybe firelizards don't. You sure are pretty." He murmured as he came back. "I've never seen anything like you before. I wonder what they call you?"
Extending his hand, he offered the tidbit to her. "Want it?"

Oisi pressed her hands against her ears as Tansha’s panic flooded her mind. Her terror was so loud and it hurt her head. Forgetting her own hesitation, she bolted deeper into the barracks, scooping up Naani who had started cowering on a chair. “Tansha!” she called, poking her head into every room. The cinnabar was nowhere in sight. “Tansha, where are you?!” Why had she asked her to do this? She was still so young and panicky. Tansha!
Tansha was relieved to find herself freed quickly, but she was very angry at the things that had dared to trap her, and she quickly set about attacking them, her tiny claws and sharp fangs putting oddly big holes in the clothing. She shrieked her silent shrieks at them, tail whipping from side to side, sending some of the lighter offenders into the air.
Suddenly there was a voice (she’d forgotten about the boy in the room, the original reason for her appearance there) and a bit of meat was waved in front of her. And just as suddenly, she was starving. The anger in her eyes subsided to hunger and she pounced at the offering, catching the tips of the boy’s fingers in her greedy haste. She licked at the tiny, welling blood drops, both in hunger and apology, then set about scurrying over this new playground she had discovered.
“Tansha!” Oisi charged into Elial’s room, panic on her face. “Have you seen my-” She stopped talking when she saw the cinnabar crawling over the young boy she had addressed without really noticing he was there. Despite herself she giggled. “Oh, I see you have.”
Tansha sent a chirping thought to Oisi, barely greeting her as she entered and it was returned by a small sound from Naani as the green peeked out from behind Hers’ neck.

Luckily, Elial had always had a high tolerance for minor injuries. He couldn't blame the firelizard for accidentally nipping his fingers as he'd offered her meatrolls, as it was obvious that the wounds were unintended. The damage to his clothing, however, had been fully intended and he wasn't so sure he could forgive that. It hadn't been her fault; she was obviously young and couldn't be expected to respond any other way to something that had trapped her. He'd felt her panic, her frustration and knew precisely how distressed she'd been while stuck under the clothes. Still, those things were his, and given the current state of the Weyr, not all easily replaced. In spite of his feelings, though, he stifled his resentment and shrugged off the offense. She was clearly someone's companion and angering her person wouldn't accomplish anything. Plus... she was beautiful. Perhaps it was shallow of him to cast a blind eye towards her actions because of that, but there it was. Red wasn't a color you saw on a firelizard often... if ever.
Not unexpectedly, the pretty creature's human made an appearance. He knew the young lady's name to be Oisi, but little else. Being young, he hesitated to interact with girls on a regular basis. Kids his age tended to assume that if a boy talked with a girl a lot, they were involved romantically. Elial was nowhere near ready for such affairs and had no desire to lose his boyish reputation for the sake of a few conversations. Girls were playmates and friends, nothing more.
Oisi had another firelizard with her; this one was a much more common green hue, but covered in scars and other abnormalities. The poor thing! Elial's heart immediately went out the dear lizard, and he wondered what had caused such damage to such a harmless creature. Well, he corrected himself as he glanced at his bleeding fingers, not entirely harmless. Still, what could've done that? Perhaps she'd been born that way?
"Tansha, that's her name," he replied cautiously, "yep, she's been here with me. She got caught under my clothes an' got a little spooked. She'd not hurt though, I promise. I gave her a meatroll to smooth things over."
He found himself unable to look away from the unfortunate, mangled green. "She okay? I've never seen injuries like that on a lizard..."

“A little spooked?” Oisi repeated skeptically. Elial was still a boy and not yet quite a man; thus she did not feel threatened by him and could allow herself to relax a bit. She eyed the shredded garments. “More than a little, I’d say.” She cast a hard glare at Tansha and sent her thoughts to inform her that she was in trouble, but the cinnabar replied with feelings of pride and continued her trek around this new person who paid her such delicious tribute. At this point, it was almost a runway strut since she was able to decipher the residual emotions connected to his private thoughts about her…the upside to her muteness, perhaps. Oisi rolled her eyes and turned her attention back to Elial. “I have some old tunics to replace the ones she ruined,” she offered hesitantly. They were all cut for men so that they were long enough to cover everything she wanted to cover without noting her femininity, but Elial hadn’t known her prior to her coming here and couldn’t know that she had dressed as a boy for years now. Maybe he would get offended at the offer, thinking she was trying to give him girls’ clothes. “They’re all in good condition too. I just….outgrew them.” She didn’t elaborate on what she meant by that, but the long pause between her words and the way she shifted a bit closer to the door gave a pretty good indication.
And suddenly the boy was talking about Naani. How he’d seen her, Oisi didn’t know, let alone how he had seen her long enough to notice her scars, which were almost the exact shade of her skin. The little green was huddled in an unbelievably small ball at the moment, tucked under the protective curtain of Oisi’s short hair. Smiling, Oisi reached up and took the small creature in her hands, cuddling her close to her face. “Naani? She’s fine. I mean, she’s definitely seen better days, but her life’s not in danger. I found her a few years ago and she was beat up pretty badly. I think a hawk got her or something. She’s been with me ever since I nursed her back to health.” She rubbed the green’s head gently before letting her return to her hiding spot. “I seem to be a magnet for the handicapped…You may have noticed that Tansha’s mute.”
The cinnabar thought-cried her lament from Elial’s shoulder, and tumbled down into his lap, playing dead with her small feet twitching in the air. She rather liked this pink thing (unlike most of those that had shoved their faces into her space at her hatching) and hoped that he would try to comfort/revive her with more of that delicious food.

Something inside Elial's subconscious rebelled at the very notion of recieving a girl's old clothing. What if the other male candidates found out about it? He'd never live it down, certainly. He shook his head vigorously from side to side and cringed. "No, that's nice an' all, but I don't want a girl's tunic. Everyone'll know it belongs to a girl, especially since you used to wear 'em." Considering that his outright refusal might be viewed as rude, he added "but thanks for offering. I won't miss those tunics all that much." In truth, he was still slightly upset about the loss of a few of his things, but he wasn't going to argue about it now. Getting more upset would only make Oisi try to convince him to take her old tunics, which was totally out of the question. He'd just have to try and get over it.
"A hawk, hmm?" He asked. "She's sure lucky it didn't eat her up. Green firelizards aren't that big, an' it'd be real easy for a bird that big to gobble something that little right up." Elial had never seen a hawk up close, but they had to be pretty big. They looked big from the ground, anyway. He'd heard stories of birds like that dragging off baby herdbeasts and even small children, though the latter seemed highly unlikely. People probably didn't taste good to them, and he couldn't see how the hawk would lift a child off of the ground. "Do hawks really eat babies?"
Her comment about the reddish firelizard being mute surprised him. He'd not even noticed that the poor creature hadn't cried out; he'd only noticed the waves of fear she'd sent through his mind. But no, she hadn't made any verbal noise. Oisi was right about attracting handicapped firelizards, though he had to admit Tansha looked to be in far better shape than her green friend. Elial knew he'd rather be mute than get torn up by some massive bird, though on second thought he really liked talking. Besides, if he had as many scars as little Naani did, he could brag about them to his friends. Saying that he'd rather get beat up than be mute was probably what the adults in his life were always calling "inconsiderate" and so he kept those thoughts to himself.
Tansha, meanwhile, seemed to have totally forgiven him. The meatroll had worked! He didn't have any more food, but if she allowed him to pet her... he reached for her small, bright head and stroked it gently. He was totally prepared to be scratched or bitten, but if the pretty little girl liked him, he'd at least have that to boast about among his friends. "She seems to be ok now. I've never upset a firelizard like that before. I've also never seen a firelizard this color... what's she called? Her color I mean."
