Pern's History

Exploration- Pern is home to three major landmasses, four major oceans, and a multitude of widely spread islands. It was explored and cleared for colonization by an Exploration and Evaluation Corps team about two hundred years before colonization of the planet was commenced. Ten days were spent assessing the planet in order to determine if it was suitable for colonization. The EEC team recorded various aspects about the planet, including geographical, geological, botanical, ecological, and zoological information about the planet from a variety of locations. The EEC team were originally confused about a random pattern of bare circles covering the planet. These strange occurrences appeared all over the planet, and these would later be revealed to be from Thread some 200 or so years later after colonization.

Pern's purpose was for a group of 6,000 colonists who wanted to escape to an agrarian society with a low level of technology so badly that they were prepared to take a fifteen-year one-way journey to an isolated part of the galaxy. These people came from Old Earth, First Base on the Moon, and a colony at Alpha Centauri. A recent war with an alien species had wracked the established human settlements, and many colonists wanted to escape the aftermath.

Colonization- The initial colonization went as planned, with three ships being left in orbit around the planet as empty husks while colonization pods carrying the colonists flew down to the planet. Not even a decade after the first colony was established the settlers discovered that Pern was subject to period, but predictable, attack from a space-born substance they came to call Thread.(Please see here for more information) Thread would devour all organic based substances rapidly, and were it not for the discovery a small indigenous creature, the Fire-Lizard, the colonists of Pern would likely slowly be eaten away by Thread, or starve. The Fire-Lizard was a creature with remarkable adaptations against Thread. It could fly, teleport, had limited telepathy, and could chew phosphine bearing rock to generate bursts of flame.

Kitti Ping, a scientist trained in genetic manipulation by a race known as the Eridani, genetically "upgraded" the Fire-Lizards into large fire-breathing and telepathic dragons. These Dragons were able to burn Thread from the sky before it could reach the ground. Dragonriders became an important part to Pern society. Shortly after the creation of the Dragons a huge volcanic eruption just to the south of Landing forced the colonists to evacuate. The majority of Southern was evacuated to the North, and they would eventually forget their Terran origins.

Last Contact- In the weeks following the first Thread attack, the colonists debated on sending a homing capsule to Earth to ask for help. The majority of the colonists demonstrated a strong feeling of independence and bravery, traits that would later be commonplace among the people of Pern. They decided to fight Thread alone, though a small section of the community disagreed. One individual, Ted Tubberman, a botanist, sent off an SOS with a homemade beacon. In retaliation and punishment the rest of the colony shunned him. This act of shunning would be the precursor to how punishments were dealt with in the future.

**About fifty years later a Fleet battle cruiser called the Amherst happened to pass by the Sagittarian Section on a search for alien incursions. The ship captain noted that the Rukbat section ah\d been flagged for investigation by passing ships instead of direct help. The captain, Anise Fargoe, authorized a rescue run in order to determine the reason for Tubberman's SOS. Upon arriving planetside the expedition leader, Lieutenant Ross Vaclav, nephew of Admiral Paul Benden, flew the shuttle Erica in a scanning pattern. However he failed to notice the settlements on the Nothern continent of pern, likely due to the fact that people now housed themselves within caves to protect from Thread. Though in the South the original settlement, Landing, was found to be buried under volcanic ash. However a faint beacon still pulsed in the in the mountain range. The rescue crew found one of the original colonists, Stev Kimmer, who was now an old man in charge of Honshu Hold. He and his people convinced Ross that they were the last survivors of the colony, thanks to Thread, and that further searching was not needed. They were evacuated and the Rukbat system was interdicted, ensuring that Pern would remain undisturbed in future times to come.

The Star System

Pern is the third planet in a solar system of five in the Rukbat system. The star Rukbat is also known as Alpha Sagittarius. In the Pern reality Rukbat is a class G (yellow) star, though the real Rukbat is a class B (blue) star. Pern itself has two moons, Belior (closer) and Timor (farther). Within the system are two asteroid belts and Oort Cloud, which is the origin of Thread. There is also a sixth "rouge" planet called the Red Star. The Red Star has a wide and irregular orbit. It's orbit takes it through the Oort Cloud where Thread capsules collect on its surface, and every 200 years or so the Red Star passes close enough to Pern to drop Thread for 50 years. Occasionally the Red Star doesn't pass close enough to Pern to drop Thread, and so then 450 years are between each pass.

During initial exploration reports the gravity of pern was labled a 0.9, which is assumed to be 90% of Earth's gravity.

The planet has a 15 degree axial tilt, giving it seasons similar to Earth.

Pern's Geography

-General Map of Pern (9th Pass after rediscovery of Southern)

Southern Continent- The largest continent, Southern, is covered in a large expanse of tropical jungle and grassland, including a huge desert to the west. It also extremely high in tectonic and volcanic activity, and thus the landmass is often changing. The Southern Continent was home to the first settlement on Pern. It is by far the largest landmass on the planet, extending around the entire globe, and has not been fully explored. Not only does its size take a considerable toll time-wise for map-makers but the thick jungle is nearly impossible to map by foot considering how easy it is to become lost. It's climate is far more pleasant than the other major landmasses comparatively, and climates close to the large bodies of water that dot Southern are relatively stable. One such body of water is the Sea of Azov. It is a huge sea that breaks the jagged mountain peaks and stretches for miles. It is an inland sea (freshwater) dotted with rocky islands and outcroppings. Places closer to the mountains have climates more like those traditional to Earth, including a Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. While those other places have simple Wet and Dry seasons, and others still don't see much climate change throughout the year. It is suspected that the South Pole of Pern is a snowy wasteland, but attempts to explore there are blocked by a tall and continuous mountain chain.

Northern Continent- Northern is the second largest continent on Pern, and is the most heavily populated area of pern to date. After the eruption of Mount Garben at landing the majority of the population fled north. There they founded Fort Holt and Fort Weyr, the first major settlement of the Northern continent. Compared to the Southern continent the Northern is very stable, though many places of the land are relatively infertile due to it mostly being composed of "shield" bedrock. There are some places that are just as fertile and similar climate-wise to southern. Places like Nerat, Boll, and Ista Island are covered in dense jungles, while the plains of Keroon are wide grasslands. To the far North is a wasteland of snow and ice, and seeing Human or Dragon habitation there is unheard of. Pern is scattered with large cave systems and are particularly abundant on the Northern continent.

Far Western Continent- The Far Western Continent is the least remote, and unknown, of all the continents on Pern. Not much is known about it, and the only reason its existence is known is due to being seen from space and the occasional maritime expedition. Due to this its climate is unknown, as are the species that live on it. It is the smallest continent on Pern and is uninhabited by Dragons and humans.

The Oceans- Pern is home to four major oceans, being the Western Ocean, Eastern Ocean, Southern Ocean, and the Ring Sea. Little is known about the Ring Sea, and like the Western Continent it is known only from satellite observations. The Southern Ocean is the most important, as it divides Northern from Southern and is prone to large tropical storms and strong currents. It's easy for even a seasoned sailor to have their ship dragged out to sea during a sudden storm. Tropical Cyclones are relatively common. Pern's Oceans are a major producer of food, as much of Pern's sea-life is edible.

The Islands- Pern's oceans and seas are dotted with hundreds of islands, though those of the most notice can be found on either side of the main continents. They are called the Ring Islands, or more specifically, the Eastern and Western Ring Island. Not much is known about them other than they are volcanically active, so new islands are constantly popping up. Some of these islands are used to send criminals to.
