"She's found one, I think," Teagan commented.

A gentle wind rolled over the tall prairie grasses, making the landscape appear much more like a seascape. With each wave, Teagan was reminded of peaceful moments beside the ocean. Why, this tempyst of grass even had its own dolphin! A small, green dolphin to be sure... but a bobbing, squeaking dolphin nonetheless.

The three of them--Teagan, Zeltath and little Spotlight--had been out for a simple morning flight. Everyone in the Weyr was in good spirits lately; Mertaith's latest clutch had hatched healthy and strong, the felines had been beaten back with minimal casualties, and whers had been added to Maori's ranks. There had been sadness, briefly, but experience told Teagan that it was far better to focus on the good in life rather than dwell on the bad. Those they'd lost wouldn't want them to become stagnant... they'd have wanted everyone to move on, and move on the Weyr had. There was a new batch of Weyrlings to be taught, and the business with the whers to be sorted out. Life went on... and life, for the most part, was good. The weather lately had been quite fair, for example. It seemed like a minor thing in light of all that had happened, but Teagan felt it was worth getting excited about. What was life if you couldn't get excited about the little things?

Zeltath had been planning on sleeping the whole lovely day away, but Teagan wasn't about to let her waste such a fine morning. After several minutes of coaxing, the gold-green had been roused and they'd departed. Teagan's young firelizard had accompanied them, and for a little while, the three of them had flown in perfect peace.

The peace had been broken by Spotlight; as they'd begun to fly over the Maori prairie, she'd veered down, as if she was after something. Landing revealed what it was she was seeking... there were dozens of fat tunnelsnakes skittering around in the grass. Spotlight had emerged from the tall, waving foliage with one particularly chubby morsel in her mouth, dropped it in front of Teagan, and flown back into the grass to find another. She'd continued in this manner for some time... and before long, a pile of four tunnelsnakes was standing in front of Teagan and Zeltath.

It's been a long time. Maybe she's scared them all off? Zeltath said through a yawn.

"Could be. They might've gone deeper into the grass, where it's harder for her to get at them." Her rider replied.

The pair watched and waited for the tiny green to return...

A shear whistle rang out in the air, a screech from up above answering it a moment later. Through the trees, a feathered shape plummeted, stooping at breakneck speeds before flaring wide wings and halting on a dime to land on a gauntleted arm without so much as a thud. It took a minute to catch his balance though, as said arm was currently attached to a walking human. Once he was situated, his pet fed him a small strip of meat which he swallowed in one gulp. His pet had called, and he had answered with what he saw.

Sure enough. A dragon was nearby. Which meant no more hunting for the time being.

Well, at least not near the dragon.

Kesial smoothed Striker's feathers as she walked, stepping over a fallen log and into a smaller clearing near the edge of the prairies. This was the best place to take Striker to train. It was open with plenty of small prey, and Kesial's voice could be heard a long ways off. And she wouldn't lose track of Striker easily. So why was she in the woods?

It was hard carrying a 20 pound bird on her wrist.

Once in the clearing, Kesial crooned to the annoying pet that had attached himself to her and tossed him into the air. A couple of wingbeats had him clear of the trees and soaring high, already swooping into his characteristic hunting pattern. After watching him for a minute, Kesial started walking toward the prairie despite the dragon. As she got near, she noticed something rather odd.

The tunnelsnakes were leaving the clearing. Now that was odd...

A screech drew Kesial's attention to the clearing ahead just as Striker dove from high altitude and into the grasses, barely a blur of slate and white feathers. Kesial quickly stepped into the clearing--trying not to step on any snakes--and whistled shrilly. A chittering cry answered her. Striker had prey. The eagle had a tunnelsnake in his talons, the reptile dwarfed by the size of its eagle captor. And she noticed something else too. The dragon was nearby, lounging at the edge of the clearing.

"Hurry up and eat it. You caught it," Kesial said in a very annoyed tone, not caring that Striker wouldn't understand a word. Sure enough, Striker picked up the snake and began swallowing it. Kesial turned her head but kept looking back, morbidly curious despite herself. "Ugh. That's just sick. You done now?" Striker preened his wing feathers before looking at her with his sharp black eyes. He chirped--which sounded odd from a bird his size--and hopped to Kesial's arm before leaping into the sky again. Kesial again watched him for a few moments before walking to the edge of the clearing. Might as well get business over with.

"Hey," she called with a wave to the gold-green's rider, not giving a damn that she was one of the leaders of their small Weyr. "Any small critters belong to you I need to know of?" So Striker didn't attack them by accident thinking them prey. That would be just her luck. He would attack some ferret or something, eat it, only for Kesial to discover it was someone's beloved pet and they were going to kill themselves because of it. Because that ferret was the only thing that was keeping them alive.

Yeah. That would be her luck.

Several minutes had gone by and Spotlight had yet to emerge. Teagan was not prone to excessive worrying-- having spent most of her life as a healer had trained her not to panic in bad situations--but couldn't help it when it came to her firelizard. Spotlight had been trouble from the beginning, and besides, she was so very small. Any number of creatures might see her as prey! Still, the young green was fast and agile enough that she would likely be able to escape most of the prairie's predators...

... as if to confirm that her anxiety was valid, a magnificent bird was circling overhead. No doubt it belonged to someone--birds were not native to Pern--and was hunting the prairie's many tunnelsnakes as well. Zeltath began to bugle a welcome, but Teagan stopped her; birds, while intelligent, were not always aware of the many social behaviors of dragonkind. The last thing Teagan wanted was for someone's beloved pet to be frightened into the wilds by her dragon!

It seemed that it would not come to that, though. A young woman that Teagan recognized was approaching... the bird's master, probably. The girl's name was Kesial, and she was a candidate... but everything else about her was unknown a mystery. Teagan had certainly never seen her pet before!

"He's stunning," she called back, "you've got him well trained, I presume? My firelizard's in there somewhere, so have him look out for her. She's a little green."

Zeltath nodded a brief greeting to the new arrival before returning her attention to the bird. The dragon was fascinated by the feathered thing, which, while gifted with the same graceful powers of flight as herself, was vastly different in so many ways. The gold-green's eyes swirled in the hues of amusement as she eyed the foreign beast.

"She likes your bird," Teagan explained. "I don't think she's ever seen one before now. Must be interesting for her to see a fellow flying creature that doesn't look like her..."

Getting close to the dragonrider, Kesial finally recognized her. Teagan and Zeltath. It was easy to remember the gold-green riders, even though Kesial had only been in the Weyr for a couple weeks. From what Kesial had discovered, there were only two of them. Oh, and a weyrling. So three. That was easy to remember. The falconer nodded in response to the comment, grossing one gauntleted arm over a bare one and watching for Striker's stoop. Sure enough, the eagle tucked his wings and plummeted, not even flaring his wings until he was mere feet from the ground, disappearing into the grasses.

"Oh, firelizards are fine," she commented off-handedly, watching for her eagle's re-entry into the air. "Small dogs would be more likely to attract his attention," was said with a rye chuckle. Still watching out to the field, Kesial tried to make small talk, a skill she was in no way proficient. "My father raised raptors like him before the evacuation. Striker was one of his prized creatures."

As the eagle leapt into the air and started circling higher, Kesial put her fingers to her lips and blew a shrill whistle, three short bursts, the third of which rose in pitch at the end. Striker responded immediately, circling toward Kesial before swooping in. The falconer raised her gauntleted arm and braced for the impact with slightly spread feet. The eagle was massive, a fact even more apparent when he flared his wings to slow himself for landing. The six-foot wingspan dwarfed Kesial's shoulders when the bird lit on her hand. He took a moment to settle himself and Kesial tied his jesses to her brace while he climbed to her shoulder.

"This is Striker," she said by way of introduction, her tone a bit acidic but she gave the bird a bit of dried meat as reward for answering her call. He'd already eaten, but took it anyway. Gah, she hated the bird, but he was her responsibility. "He's a martial eagle according to my father's labels, and quite different from your dragon." Kesial gave a polite nod to the gold-green.

((OOC: It's fine, I've not exactly been swift in my responses))

Teagan smiled as the young woman explained her unusual companion. It was interesting that such an impressively large bird--and it was massive--could behave in such a tame manner. Oh, the eagle would probably never be tame in the sense that a dog or cat might, but he wasn't exactly tearing the girl's arm to bits... Teagan had seen firelizards do as much when frightened!

"Amazing," she mouthed, "he's lovely. And you too, Kesial."

She'd have to make note of that name and remember it in the future. It wouldn't look good if she met this interesting young woman and failed to remember her name later on... such behavior was very unbecoming of a junior weyrwoman. She couldn't depend on Zeltath to remember it, after all. Much as she loved her life-mate, even the most talented of dragons had poor memory. Kesial... this was one girl who wouldn't go to the sands meek and frightened!

"A martial eagle, hmm? I'm afraid I don't know much about birds. I was always more focused on human things, though I have to admit, your friend here has made me curious. I'm glad he doesn't eat firelizards, though. Spotlight's pretty small, but I doubt she could pass for a small dog." Teagan commented.

Just then, the tiny green firelizard burst out of the tall grass. She hadn't found another tunnelsnake, but that didn't seem to bother her in the slightest. She was far too focused on zipping over to her person and garnering as much attention as possible. Spotlight landed on Teagan's shoulder and immediately began rubbing her face against the woman's neck. "Easy girl," Teagan chuckled, "you've not been gone that long!"

Zeltath snorted at Spotlight, who chittered angrily back. Nothing was going to take her person's adoration from her... not even the scary thing on the other person's arm! The little green took off and sped over to Kesial... and began to circle her eagle menacingly. At least, she must've thought she looked menacing.

"Silly thing," Teagan sighed, "Spotlight, get over here! I wouldn't blame him if he gobbles you up!"

She turned her gaze back to Kesial. "Sorry about her, she's an attention-lover if there ever was one. I don't suppose you've got a firelizard of your own? They're a handful, but they're fun. You're a candidate, obviously... so what's your story? You excited to stand?"

((Sorry. Real life took over and is causing me some serious problems. Forgive the poor quality of this post. My muses are not really active lately.))

Kesial just grinned in response to the compliment, making a mental note to watch the gold-green rider in the future. The lovely comment was okay in reference to Striker, but to her? Well. Kesial didn't swing that way, and it'd be good to note who did just in case they decided to try something. But Kesial wouldn't hold that against Teagan yet. Try anything else, oh yeah she would, but not for the time being. Not even Kesial was that judgmental.

Striker, however, took offense to the sudden appearance of the firelizard. He watched the green with a wary eye, shrugging his wings and ducking his head. Kesial ran a hand down his back to try and calm him, but it had no effect when the firelizard decided to pester the eagle. Striker flared his wings wide as the green zipped around his head, screeching fiercely and letting Spotlight know exactly how little he appreciated the little pest.

"Striker, hush," Kesial hissed at the eagle as his wing smacked her in the head when he flapped it in annoyance at the firelizard. The candidate growled and forced his wing to his side, earning her a snap at her hand. He drew blood and Kesial cursed, but it wasn't anything she wasn't used to from him. "No, no firelizard," she said tightly, glaring at the flustered eagle. "Pretty sure Striker would eat one at this rate, and I have my hands full caring for him. Firelizard aren't his natural prey, but he'd probably get jealous enough eventually."

After a minute Striker did calm enough to not dig his claws into the gauntlet, probably strong enough to leave bruises, though his wings were still held away from his body just slightly in case he needed to teach that Thing a lesson about the food chain. Kesial stroked his back until he tucked his wings with a rustle of his feathers. "You're good if you pegged I'm a candidate," Kesial said with an appreciative nod and smirk. She hadn't been wearing any knots, so it was either a lucky guess or something else that tipped Teagan off. "A wher candidate actually. Got caught when thread came and then the volcanoes, so Striker and I just arrived three days ago. Too old for a dragon, so a wher was the next best thing," was said with a shrug, though her real reasons were much more complicated.
