Why do they never go back to Subcon?

I'm a guy who actually played Super Mario Bros 2 a lot as a kid and I loved that game even though it was different. The world and the characters were cool. Why did they never go back to Subcon? I'd love to see a New Super Mario Bros set in Subcon.

Something about Mario in crossovers?
I think it's because of DDP, which means Subcon's not really a Mario world.

Because Subcon, likely derived from subconscious, is a world created in Mario's dream. Therefore, none of them actually went to a world named Subcon, but merely appeared in a non-existing world of that name in Mario's dream. This would require him, or some other to go to sleep and, with luck, dream it all up again.

so yeah, that's probably why.

But that doesn't explain Shyguy and Birdo appearing in games like Mario Kart

Shy Guy and Birdo may have first appeared in Mario 2, but there's nothing to say that they aren't real characters who were simply in Mario's dream as well as the likes of Luigi and Peach.

I wonder if Nintendo even has the rights to it since it was a whole different game before it got a SMB paint job.

But I would like to see another game like this one.

I'd love to see Subcon return once again, but then again - SM3DW pretty much was very "Subcon"ish at best.

Perhaps Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is set in Subcon - I mean turnips and Shy Guys do return in this game.

Yeah maybe but I would just like to see other characters make appearances as well. Like Mouser and Wart. Those two were pretty cool and they haven't been used ever since Super Mario Bros 2. I think that's a shame, they could at least include them in Mario Kart.
