Will the Mario series ever die?

And you Mikaya bring up an interesting point, because Mario games cover an insanely large spectrum. They've got golfing games, RPG games, and everything in between. When absolutely all ideas for video games have been covered, that's when Mario will die.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Nah, they can just repeat the same idea and call it a "series."

In NSMB's defense, I see those games a lot more as experiments for fun 2D level designs. They should not be priced at $60, but I see nothing wrong with getting fun platformers out of Mario. Aren't those games designed by interns at Nintendo anyway?

Mario would never die out. I think because of us that the Mario series is still going.

Maybe they should make the games available for older systems like the Gameboy and Gamecube, even the 64.

That would take a lot of effort, and would not be worth it in the end. Most Nintendo fans have caught up and at least own a Wii and DS. There isn't a large market for releasing games on defunct systems, as the only people still playing them are retro gamers and collectors, which are outnumbered by the amount of people currently playing games on modern systems.

Plus, releasing a game designed for say...the WiiU, on the Nintendo 64, would take a lot of time to develop due to different graphic processes and programming present.

I may have misread your post, and if I have, I apologise, but in the end, it's not worth it.

Epic covered most of it, but the process really isn't that simple. It's very hard these days just to make the same title available on all current systems and handhelds.

Mario is like Batman.

He's not just a character, he's a symbol that will go on forever. He will continue to live in some form of media even if it's not video games, if Nintendo ever stops existing as a company and stop making Mario games, he will still love on in street art, toys, books, peoples imaginations. But he has a better chance than any of living forever inside video games, because Nintendo is made up of smart people who know how to make games, they're never going to get bogged down with micro-transactions or achievements. They make proper games and will continue on to that forever.

I think Mickey Mouse or Ronald McDonald is a better comparison.

True, Mickey Mouse is more accurate. But Batman's pretty cool.

Simply put, to answer the original question, NO the Mario series will never die. With each new console, they release new games. I'm pretty sure they are not going to quit releasing new consoles, so why would they stop making Mario? Not to mention the fact that Mario Bros. is a legend that many many generations have grown up with.

I think that the Mario series will live on for quite a while. Yes, I'm sure at some point it'll end, but I don't think we have to worry about losing the series anytime soon. I think that the Mario series is the biggest money-maker for Nintendo, to be honest. And when you are a big company, you don't want to end something that causes people to stop buying from you.
