No assortment of games would be complete without at least some kind of Tetris variant and for the Super Mario games collection Dr. Mario was Nintendo’s answer to the popular Tetris game.

Dr. Mario is a puzzle game, after the fashion of Tetris and was released for the NES and Game Boy in 1990. In this game “Dr. Mario” throws down vitamins that the player must rack up, in order to destroy nasty viruses that occupy the game area, that looks like a medicine bottle.

The Tetris like puzzle game shows the official Nintendo mascot as a doctor who is dropping down double sided vitamin capsules in an 8 by 16 blocks gaming area that is infested by red, yellow and blue colored viruses.
Game play

Mario can drop down 6 types of vitamin capsules, each of then a combination of 2 of the 3 available colors, that are available. It is up to the player to move around and rotate the capsules, so that they are placed on top, or beside the viruses, connecting them with the right colors, so the viruses get terminated. When the two connect in the right color, both: the capsule and the virus is destroyed. The game’s objective is to clear out the playing area, destroying all viruses. The game stops when capsules or viruses block passage for new capsules, by obstructing the bottle’s neck.

At the start the player can choose his favorite settings, adjusting speed, music and choosing the level to start at. There are 21 levels and the player can start at any one of them. After level 20 is cleared, another set of 20 levels are unlocked. Levels differ by virus count, starting with only 4 at the first level to 84 after level 20 and beyond. 84 is the maximum number of viruses, so after level 20 the game does not get any more difficult. The player can start at any level and choose low, medium or high speed. The choice of speed, also decides what background color is used in the game. For music the player has the choice between Chill, Fever and no sound.

For the Game boy the game looks almost the same, differing only one block in size , and shades of grey replaced the colors that are used on the NES. The one major difference between the NES version and the Game boy version is that on the Game boy, the game continues to get harder after level 20, until it becomes impossible to play and win.

Has anybody heard of this one

Ich Bin Grammar Nazi.

Good luck on your quest, fair derp.

I've never head of it, but it doesn't look that great. Maybe there's a reason why these games are lesser-known.
