Souls cannot be bruised...
I picked up this album yesterday, and listened to it on the way to my grandmother's house. While it didn't completely blow me out of the water, it was a solid album. To be completely honest, it's the worst Coldplay album, I'd give all the other albums 4 and this one a 3.5. So, it stands up to the others, but is overshadowed. Now, onto the track-by-track review.

Mylo Xyloto/Hurts Like Heaven: 9.5/10
This is a great way to kick off the album. It shows that Coldplay has come away from their melancholy songs of violence and depression and switched gears to a new, happy outlook on life. The way Chris Martin's voice sounds is great, and the interlude of Mylo Xyloto is a great compliment to the song. One of my favorites on the album for sure.

Paradise: 9/10
Another great song. At this point, I had a great outlook on how the album would play out. I was really excited for what was to come. The infectious, soulful chorus of Chris' falsetto singing "This could be para, para, paradise" is great and catchy and reminds you of sipping lemonade on a warm summer day, watching the moon come out over the sun. Close third to my two favorites.

Charlie Brown: 7.5/10
Not too great. A pretty average song after the two openers. Still a good song nonetheless, just doesn't rank as high as some of the others on this album.

Us Against the World: 7.5/10
Another forgettable song after Charlie Brown. Pretty much the same thing as Charlie...nothing sticks out. Everything's just forgettable. Still good, though.

M.M.I.X./Every Teardrop is a Waterfall: 8.5/10
The first single that was revealed from this album put me under the impression that the old Coldplay was gone. The great depressed brooding of early songs like Politik and later dabblings such as Yes! and Lost, was gone with this song. Albeit, it grew on me. Now, this is a great song on the album in my honest opinion. The funky, infections verses and chorus is just, infectious I suppose. Great.

Major Minus: 7.5/10
Another forgettable song. Another song that was revealed before the official release of the album. It's a good song, don't get me wrong. Just...not as good.

U.F.O.: 6.5/10
It may not be very long, but it's kinda boring. At only 2 minutes long, it's over fast, but this one could have easily been left out. Not a fan.

Princess of China: 4.5/10
Ugh. This doesn't belong on a Coldplay album. This mediocre duet with Rihanna is much too poppy to be on a Coldplay album. It deserves to be on a Rihanna album. This is much too radio-friendly and mainstream for my liking, and it is the third single off the album that was released merely five days ago. I expect this one to be popular, sadly.

Up In Flames: 9.5/10
One of my favorites along with Hurts Like Heaven. This song is funky. It's soulful. It's great. It's infectious. I heard this song on iTunes a day before the album came back and this gave me more hope about the feat of this album. I highly recommend this song.

A Hopeful Transmission/Don't Let it Break Your Heart: 9/10
A hard-hitting song, sounds like it should have been on X&Y or Viva la Vida. Another close second to my two favorites off the album, more of an alternative rock song than the pop that invaded most of this album. Very nice.

Up With the Birds: 6.5/10
Boring. Until a little while in, then it gets some excitement into it. Not a good way to end this album, in my opinion.

So there you have it.

Final Rating: 3.5/5 (or 7/10)

Overall, this is a good album. I wouldn't recommend this album to anyone not a fan of Coldplay to try and jumpstart a liking. Maybe not even to just casual fans. Although, it is good for hardcore fans. If you're looking for a first Coldplay album, don't get this album. Get A Rush of Blood to the Head, the band's debut. That will introduce you to Coldplay.

Thanks for reading!
