Souls cannot be bruised...
|
I'm really bored, so I'll write a review because it's fun. Posted Image Lateralus - Tool Lateralus was a bit of an...interesting album to say the least. Most people thought Tool "sold out" with this album. That never really made sense to me. There's 5 songs that are just interludes, and all of the other songs are over 6 minutes long. That isn't accessible or radio-friendly in my mind...I'm not sure WHAT people were thinking with that. I'm not saying this is a bad album; anything but! This is a fantastic album and surely a fun ride to listen to. I don't think they use a 4/4 time signature on any song on this album but 1; if you know music, you know that's pretty rare, and awesome too. Now to the songs: 1) The Grudge (4.5/5): This opens the album off with a bang. The 8:36 long opener...talk about ambitious! This is a fantastic song that makes use of a 5/4 time signature, and is one of the few songs I've ever heard that includes the rare 5/2 time signature. It's a really great, metal-y tune. 2) Eon Blue Apocalypse (???/5): Interlude. Pretty much just guitar with an echo effect for a minute, but leads into one of my favorite songs on the album... 3) The Patient (4.75/5): This is an amazing song, it's my third favorite Tool song. It starts off so quietly and then around 2 minutes in the drums kick in with a huge bang. After that, Tool never looks back. This song also uses 5/4, I think, I'm not sure, it's either 5/4 or 5/8. Another song over 7 minutes, it clocks in at 7:12. Never does it get boring. 4) Mantra (???/5): Another interlude. This one's really strange. It's pretty much the noise that a cat emits while being gently squeezed put over some ominous effects. It's really an unsettling minute. 5) Schism (4/5): This was the most successful song on this album radio-wise. It's not my favorite, because I love the unaccessible songs in comparison to the radio-friendly ones. It's not radio-friendly by any means; the kids in my grade would run away screaming if they heard this on Kiss 108 or whatever your local "hits" station is. It uses a 12/8 time signature for the majority of the song. 6) Parabol (5/5): PERFECT interlude. It sets the tone for the next song perfectly. It leads right into it, too. 7) Parabola (4.5/5): This is really a gem of a track. The drum riff is fascinating throughout the whole thing; well, the whole song is pretty much fascinating along with it, too. Beautiful lyrics (that are very subtle, don't expect yourself to pick it up on the first time) and beautiful instrumental accompaniment. Just a little off-the-mark. 8) Ticks & Leeches (6/5): My favorite Tool song of all time. Maynard seems to get more and more frantic as the song goes on until about 3 and a half minutes in where everything shuts up and it's only a guitar's strings being plucked lightly until the drums and bass kick in at a pianissimo volume. Then, all of the sudden, out of the blue, the music cuts off, and all of it comes back in at the same time with no rhyme or reason, I think it comes in on the downbeat of 3, which is very strange. Maynard's screaming, the drums and guitar and bass are playing this epic line, and it's just pure ear candy. 9) Lateralus (5/5): This is a fascinating song. Are you familiar with the Fibonacci sequence? If you're not, it goes like this: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, etc. The trick is to add the previous number with the number you just got. For example, 1 + 0 is 1, 1 + 1 is 2, 2 + 1 is 3, 3 + 2 is 5, and so on and so on. The lyrics follow that sequence, like so: Black And White are All I see In my infancy Red and yellow then came to be Reaching out to me Lets me see The Fibonacci sequence spirals out after a while, which is why the syllables go 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 5, 3. The chorus lyrics talk about the sequence spiraling out, and the time signatures follow the pattern, 9/8, 8/8, 7/8. 987 is, fittingly, the 16th integer in the Fibonacci sequence. What a fascinating track. 10) Disposition (3/5): This is kind of a half-interlude, it's about 5-minutes long, but it's not a real song. It gets a bit boring after a while. 11) Reflection (4/5): The drum riff in the beginning is amazing, it uses a Timpani and a snare drum with the snares off and a tom. That takes some skill. It's a bit too long, but it's still an amazing track. 12) Triad (3.5/5): A 8 and a half minute long instrumental?! What is this sorcery?!?! It gets a bit boring, and it's not my favorite. It's still good though. 13) Faaip De Oiad (4.5/5): 2 and a half minutes long, but the story behind this song is amazing. Are you familiar with the Art Bell Show? I bet you're not, it was a radio talk show from way back when in the early '90s. It focused on extra-terrestrial life and crazy things that happen on Earth. Well, an extremely frantic man called in (as you can see right here) talking about 3 extra-terrestrial beings that will triangulate on earth and, ultimately, kill us all. It's very interesting, and the lyrics can be found here, and it's extremely scary too. Some people have theorized he was talking about 9/11, while some people think this is a complete hoax. You can hear the song right here, I warn you, it is very unsettling and scary, but it's worth it. I love it, and I don't know why. There you have it, Lateralus by Tool. I hope you enjoyed reading this review and I can assure you there are more to come from me. |
